Ordered a new peregrine from Abe. Leaning towards something unique in terms of wood combinations. Right now I'm thinking about black and white ebony with cocobolo. Don't see that combo often. Any other suggestions? Pics would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think the riser is Bacote?? Could be wrong. Has Wenge core (dark center) Jeff Freeman did the offset striping, not sure what wood combos it took either. But the colors went well together, and the wenge in the center of the riser really helps the figure pop.

I think if I were planning to have something unique made, I would look at some unique woods. Everybody uses Bocote, Ebonty, Zircote, and so on. The next one I build I'm going to use something like Dogwood, Apple, Pear, Mesquite, Holly, something that really isn't a run of the mill wood.

I like Macassar Ebony as a riser wood, but I'm thinking the next one is going to need to be phenolic. But I have some unique colored figured curly Koa veneers that I've had stashed for a long time that will work with the black phenolic.

Macasser Ebony and Cocobolo is a nice combination. I'd opt for the Cocobolo to run down the middle. Of course, Macasser can be lighter or almost black, and coco can run from orange to brown to very dark.
Here is a Whippenstick, two Blacktails, and a Poison Dart.

I'm a fan of one wood, even if two pieces are used. It creates a subtle elegance that also reminds me a bit that a bow can be carved from one piece of wood. Here's a Blacktail Columbian takedown using macassar and macassar, with satinwood accent stripes. Those tiny satinwood stripes proves all the contrast the bow needs, and looks beautiful.

I have had 2 all black and white ebony bows. Both riser and limbs.
I have often combined woods in bows that both contrast and and compliment. It turns out great with the right combinations.
But I dont think I would use anything but all black and white ebony on a bow if thats what my wood choice was.
Possibly Gaboon Ebony or African Blackwood or some other very dark rich wood if I was going to add another wood to the riser.

Frank, lilac is pretty too if you can find a big enough piece. It's dense and hard. There's also tulipwood and canary wood that are not used as often as many others. I wish snakewood wasn't so expensive.
Sometimes domestic woods can be quite pleasing. I just got some extreme birdseye sugar maple that I'm going to use in the lams of my next glass bow.

I recently received a longbow in a bow swap that has Koa in the limbs under clear glass.
The board it came from was over 15 years old.
Very pretty wood.

If I think of it when I get home Frank, and can find the piece I have somewhere in my stash(mess), I'll post a picture of it. It is indeed lilac colored... with some streaks of other colors.
Another cool look is 'blistered' maple. It looks 3d even when ground flat.

I like red elm under clear glass with a darker handle like cocobolo. That's about as classy as you can get. No amoeba type grains that look like they are in continual motion and don't need veneers.

I have a Saxon American recurve with the wood combo George is talking about. It also has an Osage I beam, but the riser is small so the wood grain doesn’t really stand out.

GDS "No David. To each their own of course. Looks too much like a Rorschach Test to me. ))))))"
I understand and agree George, to each his own. Thing about those veneeris, sas wild as they may look, they'll darken when the resin hits them, and they are 2 inches wide. The best part of that 2" will go onto skinny longbow limbs and that pattern as wild as it looks here will all but disappear in the woods.
