Monday, Sharps turned 6 months. From day one he's had sheds and deer fur to play with. Time to start teaching.
I had some deer liver from last year and took an arrow and string tied together, with the liver on the end of the string. My reasoning was to get the liver trail away from my scent.
At the start I put a little pool of blood. I walked with the liver at arms length for about 25-30 yards dragging it in the lawn. One small turn, but pretty much a straight line.
I put Bridger's old harness and lead on him. He had a lot of interest at the little pool of blood. Then I encouraged him forward and he'd walk the trail sniffing pretty fast for about 10 feet and then it would be like he got interested in some other smell. He'd stop and sniff left and right.
I'd encourage him forward and he'd go for 10-15 feet an get diverted. (I don't know if he's loosing the trail or just smelling other things. He's really using his nose, so I don't think he's loosing the trail) Then he'd go forward.
Made that slight turn and one or two more stops and he was at the liver. Well, that he liked. He worked on that for a minute, where I know he could have eaten it in 10 seconds. It's one inch square by 3 inches long.
Here's where it gets interesting. After he ate the liver I started walking back towards the start. His lead is 30 feet long and I let him walk free. He back trailed to the slight turn and miss it, but went back and trailed to the start.
It was like recognition, "oh, I should have been interested in THAT smell amoung the 100 others I was smelling".
He's 57 pounds now.

Yup. He isn't loosing the trail. The scent is likely saturating his nose and he needs to take a break to regain the scent. He is learning to use his nose.

I have a 15 week old lab/Brittany mix that followed his first trail this week. Only about 30 feet, dead straight. He went right to the rag. I am very hopeful now. Gave him a set of antlers to chew on now too.

Second blood trail, yesterday. This one was much more direct. Some left and right like a bird dog, but he is a bird dog. This time he ate the liver in 2 seconds. LOL.
Next one will be a bit longer with a bigger turn.

Awesome! Our pup is only 4 months but already proved he’s a sniffer. Found a few sheds, bear skull, and this dead head. Funny part though is we have no idea what sort of dog he is and now he’s 40lbs at exactly 4 months!
