Hi guys.

My wife has shown interest in taking up a recurve (lucky me huh) and I have no idea on what carbon arrows would suit her shorter draw and poundage.

She has a 26 1/2” draw and drawing around the 35# mark. She’s interested in hunting at some stage when she gets more confident so I think we need to look at something with decent Foc.

I was looking at either Gold Tips or Carbon Express - both the Traditional looking shafts.

Cheers for any advice.

WPA.

Gold Tip Warrior. Your can get them as light as 700 spine and they're relatively inexpensive. As far as the traditional looking shafts (wood grained), I am not sure the Gold Tip Traditionals go that light in spine

Look at Big Jim's website. His new Dark Timber shafts go a light as 800 spine.

Gt warriors or cx predator 2. Most wood grain shafts only go to 600 and are fairly heavy in gpi. Big jim is twmporarily sold out of his shafts. Another good wood grain option is beman centershot. Great shafts in 600 and 7.0 gpi. I use these with 100 gr tips on my 35lb bows.

big Jims dark members in 800 spine

or

carbon express predators in 800 spine or

aluminum 1716 with 125 grain saunders points (Jazz and Tributes) very economical fom Lancaster archery

Victory Archery's Carbon Trad in 650 spine. Dark wood finish that actually looks like wood. High gpi for a 650 spine shaft so she's not shoot a light arrow. Best looking trad shaft I've seen and the 650's are perfect for low poundage bows.

My bows in that range up to 41# at my 26" draw need 800 spine. Low poundage + shorter draw length+ bow w shelf cut before center requires a pretty light spine. I can make 600s and 700s work, but they end up too long and heavy for my desired 9-10 gpp. Check out dark timber or predator iis in 800 spine. If she is drawing less than 35# at her draw length you might want to get a 900 and 1000 from lancaster archery ( they sell single shafts).

My better half shoots 28# at her draw length. I bought her PSE Razorback carbon arrows that are 28” BOP and are 1000 spine shaft. Excellent flight and very accurate.

Big Jim's Dark Timber arrows! $60 a dozen you cant go wrong. Available in 800 spine and that would be just right for what you need.

No 600's. Listen to the guys about the 700 and more likely 800.

PSE Razorbacks, maybe 800. You can make light spine (e.g. 700) work but you can't make heavy spine work with light bow unless you don't care about trajectory.

Big Jim's person sez late july...wait list......ebay sez Dark Timbers come from China which would be OK except for unknown delivery time.

Since an aluminum suggestion was posted I'll add I shoot 1816 27" with 145gr point for a 35#@26 Black Bear/Sage. If hunting, 125gr BH will be about 145gr with inserts.

Don’t want to chime in too much as all the recs mentioned are good. GT Entradas are good as well. I shoot a 38# Recurve 25 1/2” draw and the 700s work very well .You can adjust the FOC with inserts to tune. PSE Razorbacks work also.

Super skinny shafts (Easton Carbon One 600s) shoot like 700 Axis not- quite-as-skinny shafts. They move the weight closer to the center. I've been testing because I've got a leftover handful of Carbon One's I may use in next 3D instead of 700s. The super-skinny do fly flatter than the same-weight Axis. Or so I think.

Thanks for the help guys.

I’m leaning towards the Dark Timbers at this stage in 800. So just to be clear, a Gold Tip 35/55 cut at say 27.5 with a bit of weight up front won’t work?

And yes, I am expecting her draw length to increase a little.

Cheers guys,

WPA.

No that is a 500 spine arrow. You might try a 15/35 with a 100 grain insert and start with 175 grains tip full length. I shoot 26.5 at 42 lbs and I shoot full length CE Heritage 90's with 175 grains up front and 45-50 Cedar arrows. I would think some 35-40 spine Cedar arrows 5/16 with Zwickey Eskilites from Rose City would be perfect.

There are so many choices available that it really is a non-issue. I mean you can get carbon arrows now as soft as 1200 spine. The .800 spine Dark Timber shafts are going to be 39lbs. when converted to AMO equivalent at 28" long.

Personally I would just get some .800's at the length I wanted them )say 28 or 29 inches) and make the bow shoot them. Should be easy peasy. Of course string material comes in to play as well, but they will still shoot regardless.

A 500 spine carbon is 63lbs, when converted to AMO....that's waaayyy too stiff unless you leave the extremely long and/or front load the snot out of them.

I’m shooting 36# with a 26 1/2” Vap 900 shaft. 80 grain tips , 2” vanes. M bow is cut way past center so I use a Beiter Plunger to move arrows almost perfect center. They bare shaft up to 50 yrds. For Hunting I’d go with a 700 or 800, adjust with point weight to get a perfect tune. Don’t worry if it’s 100 hrs or 250 grains. Shoot what the bow likes. Arrowchucker

JK, I don't know how or who has them listed on EBay, but the Dark Timbers are exclusive to me.

I had thought that we were out of the dark timbers, but when I returned to the office from Compton, I found that we had about 2 dz of each size except 400's in stock. I had the office put them on out of stock, but you can call in to get what few are left.. of course they won't last long.

Spoke with my manufacturer and we should have them mid July. The popularity of these shafts have been everything I could have expected and more! The feedback has been nothing but possitive as well. Thanks, BigJim

They are, as i said at Cloverdale, the cats a$$! Quality shafts and, again in 700&800 spines! Big Jim is definitely in tune w the needs of the trad community.
