Does anyone know...?

Owen Jeffery...?

Good question, Jason...I had it in my head that Bill Stewart was in place at Bear by then, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he designed it.

Believe Bill Stewart is the correct answer. He designed most of Bear's target bows including the Tamerlane, Temijin, and suspect the Kodiak Special, but then it was one of their earlier hunting bows, too. Maybe in the longer lengths Bill was involved.

I had a 63" one that absolutely shot extremely well. I sold it because it was too heavy for me and have never found a lighter one.

Owen Jeffery was hired to 'redesign' the Tamerlane, starting with the 1967 lineup, slimming them down and whatever else he did to create the "triangle of stability" that Bear talked about. I don't know the years that Bill Stewart worked for Bear because he also worked for some other companies during the 60's and 70's as I understand. Bill was a pretty prolific bowyer/designer back in the day. I imagine that ol' Fred himself had a good bit of hands-on in the designs back then and was the final say.

In 1967 Bill Stewart was hired away from Bear. He went to work for Bob Lee at Wing Archery, Div of Head Ski. Bill was instrumental in the design of Wing's Slimline bows.

Interesting. What was the first year Kodiak Special he designed for Bear? Nice looking bow Jason D.

Thanks gentlemen!

Kerry, I investigated Bill Stewart a little bit more closely After reading your suggestion and there seems a possibility that he may have had a hand in the 1961 Kodiak Special as he apparently had a major hand in developing the Kodiak magnum which also came out in 1961.

And yes Kelly, the 63 inch Kodiak special is a great bow! THE fastest grains per pound vintage bow that I have! Plus it shoots right where I look. :-) in the 1961 catalog it clearly designate the 63 inch KS for people with draw lengths up to about 26 inches I think. And mine is 26 1/2” so this is a bow that I can actually get the full effects of the recurve from. I am sure that has an effect on its speed when I shoot it.
