Who can make me a dual shelf recurve bow?
I heard that Mike at MadDog might make one. Does anyone know of any other bowyers that might?

Plenty of nice mid-50s Bear Grizzly and Kodiak dual shelf bows available. Why buy a new custom?

Jay or Joe St. Charles has revived the old 63" Thunderbird recurve invented by family Patriarch Glenn St. Charles. You can get it with either dual or single shelf. He is on Facebook.
Plenty of longbow builders do dual shelf on request, but seems most present day recurve bowyers are too squirrely about the whole idea, which is weird considering that Bear and to a lesser extent Pearson built thousands of them in the 1950's.
And prior to the fiberglass invasion virtually all recurves were ambidex- dual non-shelf! Stepping outside of Euro-American archery traditions of the fiberglass era, there are now hundreds of Asiatic style bows in the market. Most dual or non-shelf. Some good, some fantastically good, and some bad crap. Prices all over the place.
I specialize in the Kodiaks of 1954, 55, and 56. Hunting most of them down on Ebay. Occasionally they pop up here, the Footed Shaft, and RMSG sites.

I wanted one 35-40# in draw weight. Most of the older bows that I have seen for sale are a heavier draw weight than that.

It sure is! And so is the 1955. 54 handle is a touch less ergonomic for me, but I love them too. here's a few, and my fave Asiatic as well- Ming 5, the only 3-piece TD out of the Asiatic market. Very recurvy!

My favorite was a 40#@28", 64" 1955 Kodiak, but the tip blew off (another story for anther time) and Yorktown5 resurrected it into now the only 61" Kodiak on the planet. But it's also now up to 45#@28", shoots the lights out, I love the new bow!
But I too would love an exact replacement. Seems that there are a lot more heavy wt. 55s on Ebay right now. Usually there's more variety, have to be patient. If you can spend a little more, check out the St. Charles Thunderbird.

I bought a dual shelf Thunderbird as a "heritage" bow, knowing that my sons are left eye dominant and some of my grandkids may shoot lefty. If I was just buying it for me it would be right handed. Mike made me a couple if Maddog dual shelf youth bows and I really liked the grip.

Yes, generally anyone can shoot both RH and LH if they like, and with great result. Here’s a short piece I shared elsewhere, a little while back. “Short Article: RH/LH, Double Shelf Bows, what's that about? It's about expanding your personal archery capabilities. It can be about making an optimum bowhunting shot from an otherwise awkward position and it can be about promoting an even muscular development of your back. Shooting both handed can be a way of leaving persistent bad habits and panic behind and can help teach you things about your form you might not otherwise detect. And it's also very much about your personal archery fun! I've been practicing both handed archery my whole career (and so did my father Glenn). Contrary to popular belief, your archery does not have to be tied to the concept of "master eye". For a brand new beginning archer who is being taught to aim with a sight or the arrow tip, yes, it will make that early archery easier for both the student and their instructor. But for the polished, experienced archer, even if they shoot with a sight or by gap, it can work just fine. I've done it and so have thousands of others. And if you are a both eyes open, look and shoot instinctive archer you'll find the experience absolutely seamless, requiring no thought or shifting of gears. You simply draw and shoot one way or the other, from one shot to the next if you like. Imagine shooting a full afternoon where your fingers are worn out and your bow arm is too. With a symmetrical dual shelf bow I can simply flip the bow over and do the whole thing all over again, other handed. Funny thing, it's not unusual for some archers to discover they become better archers shooting with their other hand. Some of this can be as natural as the fact that most right handed people will have a stronger bow arm in their dominate right arm. Or some undetected weakness or physical circumstance may be bypassed by becoming an other handed archer. True, a double shelf window can not be cut to center, but unless you're tuning for championship competition, no bow needs to be. A double shelf bow will instead will have symmetrical 1/4" from center windows that will shoot the same correctly spined arrow easily and very well off of either side. I'm passing this on as something I practiced and taught as an archery professional for over 50 years. You start with a very light draw (25# or maybe less) other handed bow and simply fool around with it, all for fun. In my own experience doing this as a teenager, I was up to good skills with a 35# in a day or so and shooting 45# within the week. If you are already a practiced archer you'll find that there's really no difficulty to it. But ultimately, why even fool with this? Because it's fun, perhaps the reason you took up archery in the first place.”

Jay, everything you said applies to me. I love being able to shoot either. I picked up on that “bad habit” thing before i ever read about it and now I’m using what I learned wrong handed to slowly work thru breaking some nasty issues I have on my dominate eye side. Also something to think about is loss of vision. My dominant eye is losing strength due to a cataract that’s not ready for surgery, so if it ever gets too bad I can just keep right on rolling.

Jay, thank you for your comments. I tried switching over when I strained shoulder tendons and ligament in my right shoulder. I also found that I could work on proper form and any target panic issues disappeared as well. I do close my right eye when shooting lefty. Now I shoot both for fun.
I met you briefly at the Rock Shoot in Moses Lake last year. My first "real " bow, a Browning Wasp, I bought from your Dad in Seattle in 1970.
If you are going to the Rock Shoot again this year at the end of April, maybe you have a bow you could show me. SD

Mike made me a one-off dual shelf which is technically a hybrid but is almost a recurve. Mike is about as easy a bowyer to deal with as one will find anywhere. He built a form just to see what that bow might be like. Very fast but also a bit tempramental.

Old Pearsons had a statick double shelf. Early 60s? Mine bent in the bible over to one side. By the bible I mean the middle.
Gotta be a reason why we don't see them?I

I had to switch sides due to an injury. Everything Jay said applies to me also. Got rid of the bad habits, and it didn't take long to figure out where to point it other handed shooting with my non- dominant eye. With both eyes open, which is the way I've always shot everything,it just came naturally.

Well she shoots great, left or right. Mike was concerned about my arrow selection because the bow is not center cut.
I draw 27" but am shooting 30 1/2" carbon Warriors, .600 spine with 125 grain tips and they seem to fly fine. I did buy a dozen .700 carbons but don't think I need them.
Good bow, good price and good service. SD
