A lot of deer have been taken by guys in red-and-black wool plaid.
I'm more concerned with movement than pattern or color. Good camo lets you get a way with *a bit* of movement. So will the right color or combination.
Had a couple bears 18 yards away this past season, I was in a blaze orange coat and hat. I didn't move a muscle, they didn't spook. Week earlier, same coat, I moved a bit and a doe picked me up from 60 yards.
"Sit still!" is your best bet, with 'Play the wind' a close second.

One thing I've noticed is that the 'texture' of cloth changes how it relects light.
The 'soft' wool pants Bluesman is wearing is a 'solid' color but appears dappled in light and shadow.
I had an old army drab jacket that did the same thing. Techically a 'solid' color but appeared light-and-dark in the woods.
Shinier fabrics don't do this so well. Even many camo outfits appear 'uniform' because of the 'hard' fabric they're made of.

Wool shirts, all bought off e-bay. That 'yellow' plaid is great in the October woods.

Yeah, its not that the yellow plaid was effective. Rather the deer to one look and decided to ignore you! :^)

This is the Woolrich shirt I had on when I shot a cow elk in CO last fall--nice colors, but I wish it was wool and not cotton. Sadly, there's not as much wool in Woolrich any more; most of their stuff that I see in stores up here is brushed cotton made to look like wool.

On a serious note, can you wash the Asbell wool products in anything (Woolite) to soften them up a bit? I had a pullover that I did like, but it was like wearing sandpaper to me. I had to wear something around my neck or it drove me crazy. I ended up giving it to my Dad. I would love to have a Pathfinder pullover in Timber Ghost if it wasn't so coarse.

That yellow plaid above may be ugly to some, but you would flat out disappear hunting moose in Ontario in the fall wearing it!
I wear the same style shirt as OregonTK's above and it works great! I like the bigger patterns to really break up my outline as I hunt 95% from the ground.

The woods I hunt are predominantly tall hardwoods and I still- hunt so I am usually upright. I wear grey sweatpants (minus the sweat) and a grey or lt brown hooded jacket. I use face paint to kill the pink glare and try to stay in the shadows. I have had does walk up to me, walk past me at only a few yards and I have walked up to within 20 yards of a 4pt buck that I let walk. My only point is I dont feel I have any need for commercial camo clothing. The plaids are really cool too. WWRHD

So, clearly plaid works. Why does it work? Breaking up ones outline is the purpose of camo. But with nothing else in the woods as simetrical as squares all over your body, it seems as though you would stand out I don't understand the science of it.

It’s more than patterns and colors. The texture of the cloth matters more, in my opinion. Wool rules for hunting clothes, as far as its light reflecting and sound deadening qualities. Far more important than camp or plaid pattern. Wool has a coarse texture and the natural fibers don’t show UV light reflection like most commercial camp.
