I have an opportunity to buy a Veneko Tackle Co recurve for dirt cheap. The bow is in real good shape. I understand a lot of people aren’t a fan of fiberglass bows but this is one of those bows that seems to be a rare find. What you guys think? Does anyone have one or would buy one if they had the opportunity? The bow is in real good shape the only is is he said their does not seem to be a serial number or draw weight on it. It does still have the company sticker on it and it’s in great condition.

Sounds like it is a no-brainer if it dirt cheap and in great shape..

Lowcountry that is my thought I’m just wondering if back in the 50’s it just wasn’t a popular bow with the other bow company’s out there. I have read very little as their is not much online. I did read that the bow is fast due to the angle on the tips and smooth as well. With no draw weight on the bow and currently no string to test it out it would probably end up a collector piece if too heavy for me. If it is a collector piece then how collectible is it? The rarity of it would say yes but if hardly any were sold in the 50’s then? I happened to find a neat 1953 magazine ad online and the bow was going for $49.50 back then. I’m a big fan of antique items as I’m tired of seeing made in China ha!

By the way the dirt cheap price is $20!

Why not?

In 1954 dollars, 20 seems expensive. There's a reason they're not around. I think you're better off with a round of beers.

Seriously??

You can’t get 2 people in and out of a McDonald’s for $20 if you're not paying petty close attention.

I found a bow real cheap and started to refinish it but later learned that the bowyer’s body of work had disappeared due to glue-up issues and most of his bows had failed, so that one is getting passed along to someone who’ll use it as a pattern to experiment with.

Keep it alive, so to speak, in the shared library of bow design.

Do not listen to the naysayers, you've likely spent $20.00 much more foolishly and I'm betting not one person here ever shot a Veneko Tackle bow.

I have shot them ....... I have 2 in my collection :) they are a neat piece of history

There was very limited advertising in the 40s and 50s. Due to the cost to the archery equipment company's advertising budget and limited magazines. Remember...no internet. The bigger companies advertised more thus selling more bows.

Veneko had the entire back page of Archery on several occasions, but I never saw it in Bow and Arrow or Archery World magazines. Somewhere in my mess I have a back cover showing their bows.

Well just picked it up. Wasn’t as good a shape as I thought but not too bad. It does have the model Regent on it and it seems to measure 60”. I put a string on it and hard to tell the draw weight feels at or slightly less then my Grizzly 45# pound bow. The shelf is crazy narrow on it. We shall see how she shoots.

How about a picture of the $20 Veneko bow?

Here are some ads Veneko had in Archery magazine. Some were full page and some were half page.

First one is from October 1952.

Gray Goose, I will post some after work. Very neat articles he seems to do some boasting in them!

Very narrow shelf. Not sure why my pics have been coming in crappy lately with this phone?

Thanks for the pictures, a neat looking bow and a good deal. I shoot a couple of bows with those longitudinal stress marks routinely. A calculator says that $54 in 1954 is about $506 today.

$500 takes it! That’s $6 off lol. I will give it a whirl, stacks a little rough but then again I think that string I had laying around is possibly 2” too short. Just wanted to see how it looked and felt.

I looked a few issues back and found the first ad Veneko placed in the July 1952 issue of Archery maga

zine.

When I was helping Hugh Rich inventory his collection we listed a Veneko bow.

In the first ad Veneko mentioned that the fiberglass, Kobah, was a patent applied for process. Looks like he got around to filing the patent in July of 1959. It was approved in January 1961.

Very neat articles. From what I have been reading it seemed like a bow ahead of its time. Leo had patents on his design and I also read he was smart but a very strange guy. He also made Veneko fiberglass skis as well. I’m actually excited to see how much pep is in this thing.

Good finds as their is not too much on the internet. He might have sold more bows if it wasn’t for that pesky Pearson guy.
