I’ve had target panic for over 50 years in all forms imaginable shooting compounds with releases and fingers and also with my traditional bows.

I took Joel Turners online course and though that helped me a LOT, I still had tp.

So when Jim graciously made his off for 12 volunteers to try what helped him, I signed up. I committed and gave up my archery season to try and once for all get this demon off me.

So it began and I followed it to the Tee except I started it using my hunting bow and not going with a real light bow.

I did eventually get new 30 pound limbs and kept going following Jim’s program as he spelled out.

His program WORKS. I am now shooting controlled shots.

I believe I will always have to fight it at times, but have learned how to combat it and only shoot controlled shots.

I want to thank Jim publicaly on here for his encouragement through out this program through emails and phone conversation.

I love shooting and shooting in control is so much better.

Thank you Jim for all you’ve done!

From: Jim Casto Jr
Date: 29-Dec-18

Thanks much, Jim for the report. I'm thrilled that you're now able to shoot controlled shots and have the tools to keep this damnable demon at bay.

You make four for four so far. I'm hoping other volunteers followed the drills to-the-letter and will report in soon.

I appreciate your willingness to put in the time and hard work needed to beat the devil.

:^)

Jim (Keller), I can say the same thing about my progress so far. Today I completed day 42. It has been amazing to me. Jim helped me develop a better anchor and tweaked my form just before I started the program (I live only about 45 minutes from him). Like you, I gave up my bow season to do what one of my friends calls my "detox" program. LOL I have enjoyed the program as each day I felt I was making progress. As you said, you need to follow the plan AS DESIGNED to get maximum benefit. I wonder how many of the original testers have stuck with it as designed. Good for you!

Good deal. Nothing better than a success story. Jim is very knowledgeable and always willing to share it.>>>--->Ken

I’m still at it! Although I needed to stop for a few days because of shoulder injury and then repeated a few days.

I’m only on day 8 or 9 but I’m rollin along again! Getting stronger from it too -a nice side effect

I am getting ready to start it myself. My shoulder is feeling better. I just need to find a light weight bow to do the program with instead of my hunting weight bow.

From: fishone
Date: 31-Dec-18

Is it possible to get a copy of the target panic program? I am very interested. Thanks!

From: David Mitchell
Date: 31-Dec-18

hunterbob, I needed a lighter weight bow to start also and bought the Galaxy Ember TD longbow from Lancaster Archery for $199. I got 30# limbs. I have ordered 35# limbs tomove up a bit and picked up another one of the Galaxys with 40# limbs so I'm good to go for anything. In working with Jim in person, I increased my draw length a lot--out to 31". Those 30# limbs on my scale are hitting 35# at that long draw. I love the bow and my more expensive bows are getting jealous. LOL

"Is it possible to get a copy of the target panic program? I am very interested. Thanks!"

All you need to do is PM me your email address and I'll forward a PDF file to you.

I think we've seen enough evidence to-date. So far... EVERYONE that has followed these drills TO-THE-LETTER has had success.

So... it's time to just pass it along. :^)

From: Jim Casto Jr
Date: 31-Dec-18

GEE WHIZ!!!!!

I had no idea so many were following these target panic theads and were consumed with the demon.

I'm sure if you guys follow these drills TO-THE-LETTER you'll be successful.

Keep the PM's coming.... I'll try to keep up.

:^)

One last post in this thread--I think.

:^)

I just wanted to thank all the volunteers for their hard work and effort. The results, thus far, have been even better than I could have hoped for. Many are still at it and others are just beginning on other forums. While we have a lot of anecdotal evidence here, time will tell and give a more definitive conclusion.

So... if anyone else is interested, just PM me you email address and forward the PDF file of the drills to you.

Happy New Year to everyone and may all of you be in complete control of every shot.

I am going through shoulder surgery tomorrow and not been able to shoot a bow since turkey season....but when my bow rehab starts will be starting with light bows and a bow exercise tool I got...so would like to try this myself. Doing a fixed crawl instead of the instinctive form I have done for 28 years helped a lot...but want to really get my mind tuned up from scratch after this long lay off.

thanks for the info Jim and others.

Just completed Day 22. First shots in a month and first controlled shots since who knows when. Never thought I'd get excited about three shots from one yard. Tomorrow I get to put a little more distance behind the three shots out to 5 and 10yds. Long way to go yet to reinforce these past 22 days of exercises and extend into the next phase but I'm in. Seen more than a few sunrises from the local club range but it's been worth it. Thanks Jim.

From: Jim Casto Jr
Date: 04-Jan-19

Great news! If you can shoot those three in "CONTROL", you can shoot all of them in control.

:^)

From: David Mitchell
Date: 05-Jan-19

Krag, "Three shots from one yard" seems silly until you have TP as bad as some of us do! LOL Then three shots from three yards under full control aren't so silly after all. LOL I am doing day 45 today!

From: pdk25
Date: 05-Jan-19

Having the same problem with the PM system as others. I would also like to get the pdf file. I get the start of target panic at times, and fight it off with a few drills. It hasn't caused a problem for me yet, but wouldn't mind learn more about how to get rid of it.

From: jk
Date: 05-Jan-19

Shooting the Stickbow (book) addresses target panic without superstitions.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 05-Jan-19

jk, Jim is not discussing causes, superstitions, etc, etc, but how do we deal with it when we get it and how to actually prevent it. This plan will work well for both. His is THE BEST system I have ever tried and the only one that is working for me. No superstitions...whatever that may be.

From: jk
Date: 05-Jan-19

I don't doubt that Casto has been important to folks that work with him.

I think people who don't have that opportunity will quickly be as happy with the advice in viper's book (Shooting The Stickbow).

The faux psych notion that people "get it" is a mistake. "It" is a habit of form that can be unlearned.

From: Krag
Date: 05-Jan-19

I have owned Shooting the Stickbows for three years, read it cover to cover a couple times and refer to it often but it doesn't have a cure for TP. Jim's program that he has provided to anyone interested in it out of shear kindness is a minimum 63 day of progressive exercises is proving to work for those willing to stick to it. Many who have never experienced TP have a lot to say about what it is and isn't but based on what? I just got Masters of the Barebow Vol. 3 and it has a section on TP with many nationally known archers and bowhunters giving their version of what TP is...and it is a joke! I think one of them mentions ever experiencing it. So what does including all of the others' opinions of what TP means to them in this DVD accomplishing? Sad that someone thought including this section would be useful in any way to someone viewing this DVD.

From: dawgtrainer

I am also on day 4.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 05-Jan-19

Guys, I did day 45 today. That means that for 3 days now I have been shooting an arrow from 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 yards after the draw/let down reps. I have had no trouble even at 30 yards. So keep it up, do the exercises AS SPELLED OUT. You'll be tempted to short cut some of the steps when you discover you are getting control back. Don't give in to that temptation. :o)

From: JustinB

Jim, I too would like a copy of the program if you are still offering it. Can't PM you.

From: cvarcher
Date: 07-Jan-19

Jim, I tried everything even sold off all my heavy bows for lighter ones. I can draw about 85% and then that subconcience kicks in to stop the draw 2 inches before anchor.I fight to get it there while still on target and so its a 50 /50 for the accuracy. Funny thing is from 1-8 yds away I don't seem to have the panic to release and draw straight back into the corner of the mouth. But alittle more distance and it starts happening. Ive read books and tried drills . Im sure if I lowered the weight to a whimpy 25 pounds I could do it but will it stick going back up weight? So yeah- let me see what you worked out too, please.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 07-Jan-19

Guys, it works. I did day 47 today. Hard to believe the results I am getting. But you have to stick to the program as designed.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 07-Jan-19

cvarcher, you need to use a bow for Jim's program that, in his words, you can "dominate". I got a 30#er to begin the program. There can't be enough tension in the draw to make you have that urge to release. You need a bow that you can handle with total control and comfort to begin.

From: longbeauxman
Date: 07-Jan-19

Hey Mr. Casto, pls pm me. System won’t let me on you.

From: Dogsoldier
Date: 07-Jan-19

I used to have it really bad. My advice is to drop bow weight! Drop it down to a weight that you truly can control and shoot all day! No straining or sore fingers! I'm hunting with 35# bows now but when I first started I was shooting 65#.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 29-Jan-19

Gang, Today I finished the 63rd day's exercises and that in the frigid temps we are getting! The time has passed very quickly, and it has actually been fun to do the drills. I had no idea what lay ahead when I received an email from my friend Jim Casto, Jr. asking if I would be interested in receiving a program to combat TP which he had developed which had worked very successfully for him and another mutual friend, and he now wanted to see what results others might have and so graciously offered to send it to anyone free of charge (and it's still an open invitation I'm sure). I figured, why not, I've tried about everything else and was still having trouble even getting through my clicker before I froze up and let go. My draw length was shrinking and I was frustrated.

Day 1 began....stand 3 FEET from the target, draw, anchor, set back tension, immerse yourself in aiming, and let down. Do this 30 times! Seriously? Yes. Seemed mighty close-up--but heck, who couldn't manage that! I determined to do the drills just as spelled out--no short cuts, no cheating, no releasing an arrow before the time. Looked like a long time ahead doing daily drills but I have struggled with that stuff for waaaay too long. I committed to do it as prescribed.

Some of you who have been there and done that can relate to my joy at finally being able to back out to 30 yards and make a controlled shot. Those who have never had it won't be able to grasp the joy that brings.

This has been the start of a new day for my archery, I believe. I have increased my draw length quite a bit in the process (at Jim's suggestion) and thus now have some bows too heavy and arrows too short. But a small price to pay....and new reason to get some new stuff.

I want to openly thank my good friend, Jim, for putting me on the way to where I am today. Will it last, you may ask. I now have the tools to keep working with into the future and I intend to do so. I honestly believe that if an archer new to shooting, especially traditional bows, begins first with this series of drills they may very well never develop the problem. To others who are somewhere along the way whether day 1 or 50, stay the course!

From: Krag
Date: 29-Jan-19

David, Good to see you have completed it and it has worked for you. I have to admit ran into a snag after Day 22 - the first day of shooting. I have discussed this with Jim and others and I'm only mentioning here as I can see someone new to trad bows having the same issue if jumping right into and trying to stay with the letter of the program.

Because of my prolonged TP I had become a snap shooter so I didn't have a proper release and when it came time to take the first shot after 21 days of drawing, aiming and let down I had nothing to go by except the snap release that had been ingrained over time. The essence of the program is taking so very few shots in order to gain the necessary control so I have taken a LOA from it until I have ingrained a proper release which obviously takes a lot of shooting. I'm working on blank bale and mixing in some of the Day 1-21 drills for control.

I'm in no hurry so will wait until the release is down before going back to the program. I'm also mixing in light and heavier bows as the affect of weight on my TP was obvious when making the move from very light back to normal hunting weight. TP tends to limit the amount of shooting which affects developing the strength I need to really control the bow.

So I see the beginner gaining a better start by blank bale shooting to develop the proper form and release with the bonus of conditioning the drawing muscles to be able to control the bow before starting actual shooting. So many recommend the newbie start with a very light bow and not all can or want to but if one were to start with a coach they wouldn't just start flinging arrows down range with a hunting weight bow... but not all have that luxury either.

From: Bowguy Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Krag you don’t need to blank bale. String bow would help. In fact imo it’s the only way to teach newbies form imo. Jim’s program is reprogramming your mind. That’s really good! TP is normally never a beginner issue. It’s 2 dif things. I’m glad Jim’s program is helping guys

From: dean

I had a different way to beat my incredibly bad target panic. Mine started when two really crude over draw compound shooters kept harassing my wife and young daughter at a shoot. I imagine other people have their own specific triggers. two years later there was a 150 pound Jennings elephant bow on display, I drew it a few times left and right handed. Guess who shows up, the same two perverts that harassed my wife and daughter, i do admit the sound of his shoulder ripping loose from the socket trying to out do me was very musical. A target coach at that shoot gave me some very good help and soon my TP was history. Occasionally, I need to go through some reinforcement protocols, when my form starts to degrade. For myself, I don't like the idea of having to fight through the problems for ever and ever on every single shot. Getting the TP completely out of the way, I can work on hitting what i am shooting at and not always being trapped in working on complete form as the main goal. I like my shot to as automatic as possible. Very good of Jim to put this out there for everyone.

From: Krag
Date: 29-Jan-19

Bowguy, I also have a PVC bow I can release without an arrow and I'm using that also. I can pull and let down all I want with anything for strengthening but that's different than releasing an arrow to a proper conclusion with a hunting weight bow that the blank bale allows.

The point I was making about a new shooter is unrelated to TP but that after 21 days of drawing, aiming and letting down they would now have to release a very limited number of arrows for the next 42 or so days so how would they ingrain a proper release without the required repetition? Just saying you have to have some semblance of proper form going into Jim's program.

Once I establish that and get my release down I fully intend to complete Jim's program. It has already been proven to work...I just made it a bit more complicated for myself and if I had thought about it more should have established the proper release before even starting.

From: RonG

Mr. Casto,

I don't in any way have target panic as my shooting and accuracy is more than enough to bring home anything I want to within range of my bow, I can hold at full draw my 45lb bow for as long as I want to without shaking or panic. but the exercises and the drill that you state in your program can benefit anyone, It is a regimen of exercises to equalize your draw, form and align yourself with the target for maximum results and have full control over your bow.

I requested and received your instructions which I will start on soon and will let you know how well it has helped me in other instances.

Thank you

Shot day 52 today, dang weather has been killing my ability to get on the range but I'm going to make it.

I go back and forth between really enjoying shooting the drills to really wanting to shoot a few arrows in a row. Wont be long now though.

Has been a great experience and I'm kinda glad in a strange way that I needed to do this thing.

All the best to everyone who's joining in.

I'm at day 38 and it's working great. No more snap shooting for me. I did go back to day 1 after realizing my release needed work after day 22 due to the past snap shooting so make sure you have a proper sequence that will be ingrained through the exercises. A lower weight bow helped too. Looking forward to the next 25 days to further enhance what has been accomplished so far.

Thanks Jim for making this program available to so many.

Mission man and others,

The PDF file should be in your inbox. If I missed someone, just let me know and I'll forward it along.

Mission man wrote: "Would be glad to trade or pay for it !"

I appreciate the offer, but the the reports from folks that are now able to shoot strong controlled shots and have gained the ability to keep this devil at bay is plenty payment enough.

To those that experienced less than stellar results... I wish you the best and hope you find a system that works. One thing for sure, these drills have worked for enough people that they're certainly worth a try.

I wouldn't wish this damnable stuff on anyone.

One of the great pleasures in the life of a target panic sufferer…

...draw, anchor, set your back muscles, aim, keep pulling toward conclusion, then saying to yourself, I can either shoot or let down, and having the control to do either at any given time.

Sold a set of limbs to a fellow in Ohio the other day. He told me he'd done the drills and they "worked" for him. Never a peep nor a report from him until then. I wonder how many of those guys are out there?

Anyway... I changed my handle to one I use a dozen years ago or so. It's my little protest of the WV DNR. It seems folks can PM me easier without the issues my old handle had--maybe.

So... if anyone wants to give the drills a whirls, just PM me your email address.

I'm just geting started just on day eight. There have already been some revelations but it's too early for details. I expected it to be very difficult to abstain from releasing an arrow and thought it would be boring. Not so! It has rapidly become an something I look forward to and provides its own enjoyable experience.

The last arrows I shot were an informal 300 round. It will be interesting to compare the score of another round when the 63 days are done.

From: David Mitchell
Date: 30-Mar-19

Longcruise, my experience exactly....not boring at all and I looked forward to the drills every day. I am now a graduate! Still do some drills every time I shoot and will continue to do so. Best of success to you.

Guys, I don't know how soon Jim might see your request so I emailed the program to both of you. It's OK with Jim if I do as I am a happy user. :o) If you start on the program, stick with it AS DESIGNED--no short cuts. It may seem at first that you are really starting at square one all over again, in a way that's true, but commit to it, learn to enjoy the drills. You don't have to do them every day as in many instances that's not possible. Use the drill schedule to mark off each days drills after doing them. You will enjoy developing the feeling of being in control.

Jim has sent out literally over 500 copies of his program. It has been absolutely amazing. He will probably come along shortly with some words of further advice. Jim has been so generous to share this and it has helped a bunch of folks and Jim couldn't be happier about that.

The program has been updated and should anyone want to give it a try, just PM me your email address and I'll forward the PDF file to you. Winter is an excellent time start.

The only requirement on your part is.... I expect to hear reports along the way.

Jim...

... is there any pattern developing to the results the program is achieving? Be nice to do some statistical analysis

From: 1buckurout
Date: 17-Oct-19

Fortunately and/or unfortunately, Phil two patterns are most prevalent.

1) Those that do the drills and follow the suggestions as written are shooting controlled shots.

2) The VAST majority of folks do not follow the drills and follow the suggestions as written.

I'm still on the first phase and have stuck to it as written.I realized I had to go down in bow weight(32 lbs) to hold for any length of time. It has helped me finally find a solid anchor point that will suit me, keep good alignment, and feel comfortable.I'm about a week away from shooting an arrow. So far, I'm very pleased with the progress.

All you folks should have started earlier. Its gonna be awhile before you can shoot! :) Actually I got it late last year and did a short modified version as hunting season was going on. Not recommended, However even that seemed to help. Over the winter I went at it slow from the start and actually dragged out the draw/no shoot part waaaay to long before being able to get outside and do some of the shooting. I'm now on the last leg about 20 days left and starting to do the draw 4-5 times/shoot and I will say SO FAR it really seems to be helping. And going down in weight REALLY helped (30#) and now working at 35-40. Time will tell if it takes but SO FAR SO GOOD. Thanks Jim! Very generous of you to do this for everyone! And good luck everyone. Beat that B..tch!

"All you folks should have started earlier. Its gonna be awhile before you can shoot! :) "

I DID!!! :)

I started pretty much as soon as the isolation stuff started.

I separately need to do this program and with the clubs and shoots down, I thought I could focus on it and not be temped to shoot normally.

I have been at it for 27 days but am only up to Day 16.

This because I can do the drills up to 10 yards in my basement, over that, it has to go outside.

The weather has been poor so when that happens, I revert to the 10 yard drill, inside, but I don't count it as an actual drill in my log.

I try to do two sessions/day.

Had one "oops" on Day 6 on the last draw of a session at 10 yards on my 2nd session, but I was at full draw/anchor and it was a good shot ;) I did repeat the session, as per the instructions.

So far, I am very happy with how it is going.

I've been repeating days 9-12 for a week now. Just having a glitch at 25 yards. I'll work through it though.

From: Stringwacker Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 04-May-20

I just thought I would give a final report on this technique. I can say that after 20 years of fighting for control...that I'm back to shooting with hardly any effects of TP.

I was having trouble getting control on the 25 and 30 yard shots (though I was 90% better than I had been in the past). It hit me one day that my stimuli for anxiety was the draw process....so I closed my eyes during the draw and anchored effortlessly. When I opened my eyes, I was anchored and on the target. At that point, rather than shooting; I held on the target several seconds before releasing. After that....I could draw without the need to shoot quickly at the longer distances. It was just that fast for me.

I can't tell you how much more enjoyable shooting is and I just want to thank Mr. Casto again for his willingness to share something that really works. Though I added my own tweak to the process, it would have never worked without the prior conditioning brought forth by the Casto drills.
