shot this doe late last night was warm today so I put her in a cooler with ice overnight & today & it wasn't until thisafternoon that I realized the short lower jaw & oversized ears. sorry the pics aren't better but deer has been in a cooler not sure it this doe qualifies as a piebald but definitely neat & I'm gonna tan the hide for sure

Not many people know the world record non-typical whitetail that was found dead near St. Louis, MO also had a short lower jaw. I assume the short mandible doesn't effect their ability to eat any with a world class rack. Maybe does with short jaws grow big ears and bucks with short jaws grow big antlers. As a side note I once saw a 5x5 buck hanging from a game pole in PA back in the '60s that also had a short jaw AND was a piebald. Interesting. bw

I would call it piebald, but what do I know...

Definitely some interesting genes in that one. Crazy looking lower jaw.

Congrats on the venison. That hide will be an interesting conversation piece.

Let us know. We had a piebald we could not eat. The meat was saturated with so much fat it tasted terrible. The dog didnt even want it. Good shooting for you.

Interesting deer. Shot a piebald about 10 years ago in the late bow season. Tasted the same as any other deer from that area.

The first deer I ever shot was when I was 16 and it had a short lower jaw like that. It was a 6 pt buck. I got it mounted and I told the taxi to emulate the short jaw. He forgot to do it and it came back mounted with a regular length jaw. I told him about it and he said he wondered why the skin there was so hard to stretch. P'd me off that he forgot my directions on the order.

I would never shoot a piebald or albino deer....especially a fawn!

I shot a piebald buck in 89. Last day of archery. Had a short jaw, deformed antlers, must have only field dressed at 80 lbs. I thought it was a goat at first, chasing does. Tasted great. Congrats on your deer Timex!!

I killed a turkey with a short beak like that. He had normal ears. Got a picture somewhere. Amature tom.

Yes, it's a piebald. Pretty cool. I've killed two. Joe Hamilton, founder of QDM and a classmate of mine at UGA, told me that around 4% of the whitetail population carries the recessive gene responsible for this condition.

It's the deer equivalent of the dorkfish ;-)

Therifleman,

Know how to catch a tame doe?

Tame way...

From: Zbone

Did some research on piebalds and albinos and overbites are common with these type deer as is also short or deformed legs and Roman noses...

From: Saphead
Date: 17-Dec-18

I shot a buck with same overbite and short legs years ago. Watched him tip his head to feed ground level. 2 yrs later the neighbor boy shot one same type of jaw. You will probably see it again... Wish mine had been a piebald.

From: Zbone

Hey Liquid Amber - An piebald/albino bred to a normal pigmented animal without the recessive gene for albinism would only produce all normally pigmented offspring, but in turn, these offspring would carry the recessive gene for piebald/albinism. From what I’ve studied, when carriers of the recessive gene for albinism breed, there is a one-in-four chance they will produce and albino offspring.

I shot a long horn spike several years ago that had a short lower jaw. nobody i have asked about it had seen anything like it. this is the first time i have seen another. My deer was not piebald though.

From: Live2hunt

I mounted a buck with an overbite like that once. I was at the point of cutting the lower jaw of the form to cut 1-1/2" off and I thought "I should call and ask if he wants it this way or to give it a normal bite for once in it's life". The guy said make it normal. I was happy because I would have had to put a mouth insert into the form to make it work.

I shot a doe some years back... don't recall any jawbone anomalies, but she WAS kinda built like a low-rider....

Maybe a recessive Limousin beef gene...?

Good shot....nice one
