Hi all!

I've been checking out this site for a very long time, so I figured it was about time I introduced myself. I've never bowhunted (or done any sort of hunting for that matter) before, but I have been interested in it for many years and am more than eager to go all- in. I am also a complete amateur when it comes to traditional archery, but have been using this website as pretty much my main resource to learn and it (i.e. you all) is (are) amazingly helpful. A bit about my journey with archery...

I used to live out in the woods, so naturally when I stumbled upon an old Black Bear compound for $20 way back then I had to have it...and subsequently started shooting everything I could that was not alive.

Flash forward a few years, and I found myself living in the concrete jungle that is Downtown Los Angeles. I hadn't shot my old compound in years, and had lost a lot of the motivation to shoot because I just didn't know where to do it here.

Then they renovated the archery range that had been closed for years, located about 4 blocks from my office. I had no idea the city had done this until I got sick of sitting in standstill traffic next to the beautiful park that houses it, so I just got out of car and explored...finding the awesome new range. This completely revitalized that flame I had for archery, and on a whim decided I wanted to ditch the wheels and go full-traditional. Since then I've purchased 2 new and 4 used/vintage recurves and spend about 3-4 days a week at the range honing my shot and beating traffic. I have a LONG way to go...but I suppose that's why I'm here!

Being new to all of this, I'd love to know if there are any SoCal bowhunters out there willing to give a bit of advice to the new guy? I am dead set on tracking down a turkey in the next year or so, and would also like to eventually go after some deer and hogs. I honestly have no idea where to start with this...and local hunters don't seem to be much help. They all want to keep their secrets for themselves haha!

Interested to see how many folks on this site are in my neck of the woods, and how the hunting is over here! I've got about a gazillion questions, so you'll be seeing a lot more of me around here!

You guys are great, thanks for all the good wishes and compliments on the bows!!!

I've spent a long time lurking here to get an idea of what some good bows are. and tried to build my "lifetime collection" early. You wouldn't believe the deals I got on those. The Blacktail I found on Ebay for less than $300 shipped to my door. I actually felt kinda bad winning that auction...the seller was a really nice guy and I feel like he should have gotten more, but I wouldnt have been able to afford it in that case. At least it will see some good use!

Thanks Cobra!

I had a bunch of guitar wall hangers I meant to use for their intended purpose, but some of my guitars are very heavy and I just never felt safe hanging them. We do have earthquakes quite often haha. All of my bows weigh about 3 pounds or less and the riser rests perfectly on the hanger, so I put those guitar hangers to better use. Add a rubber band around the riser and those things aren't going anywhere, very secure!

I definitely have the disease...I just can't stop! I seriously need to stop visiting eBay, that place is dangerous. I can't believe how little some of these bows are going for...

Funny story about the wide range of bow sizes...

The initial idea was to just find something that fit me, since I already had a 68" recurve that seemed a bit too long to hunt with. So I started scouring eBay with the intention of buying good old bows in a variety of lengths, seeing what fit me best, then selling the others. The problem is...I fell in love with all of them after shooting them and decided to keep them all!

The Blacktail is just downright gorgeous, a pleasure to simply hold, and drives arrows into the target like nothing I've felt so far.

The Red Wing Hunter is probably the most comfortable grip I've ever tried, feels incredibly solid in the hand, and draws sooooo smoothly.

Most surprising by far was the Kodiak Mag. I am 6' tall with a 30" draw, so I definitely did not think this bow would fit me, and it is by far my favorite. I am perplexed. It draws so so smoothly with no stack that I can feel and I notice very little finger pinch. In fact, the sharp string angle helps keeps my self-nocked arrows in place as I am drawing, which I actually like. I also seem to be most accurate with the KMag. I am honestly shocked, and have been checking out other 52" bows because I like this thing so much. Currently have my eyes on a 52" Red Wing Hunter, since I like the grip on the 58" so much...

From: Slothfish
Date: 14-Dec-18

Thank you Riverwolf! I am excited to share!

Seriously though, based on everything I've read I would have never even tried the KMag unless I found one for crazy cheap online. I bought it 100% with the intention of selling it, and now it's my favorite bow!

I have you all to thank for leading me in the right direction, even if you didn't know it!

From: Wild Bill
Date: 15-Dec-18

Welcome. Have you considered 3D or paper shooting competition, not every archer hunts.

From: Pdiddly
Date: 15-Dec-18

Bienvenue ( Welcome) from Gatineau, Quebec Canada!

Your bow purchases show you are on the right track...and the KMag is a good short bow. That Browning is a great bow!

One caution is that I would not recommend buying any Howatt bows. They are horribly designed and known to delaminate explosively when stored on a bow rack, let alone making the often fatal mistake of actually shooting one!

I try and get as many as I can to ensure others are not put in harm's way!!

;^)

Welcome aboard from the North Carolina mountains. As odd as it may seem, Southern California and Los Angeles have long and deep archery roots. Some of the movie stars of the 40's, 50's and 60's , maybe since then, were dedicated archers. Some legendary bows were made in Southern California There's a good chance that your Browning Medallion was made in San Diego.

From: Slothfish
Date: 15-Dec-18

Wild Bill - Indeed I have! I'll be checking out a range in Pasadena that hosts 3D shoots in the near future.

Pdiddly - Thank you for the warm welcome! I'll be sure to send any Howatt's your way for safe keeping!

Mangonboat - I actually had no idea, I'm going to see what I can find about CA's archery roots now! I just got this Browning for $30 on eBay, was delivered last night. Someone please stop me...I need to stop looking at old recurves!
