Just curious as to thoughts on the late model phoenolic SK's. The grip looks a bit high wrist in the photos. Is performance about the same as the SK/TD

They are fantastic bows ! All the Super Kodiak years are my favorite Bear bows ! I have a 2017 Black Phenolic, it’s as nice a shooting as the old ones. Made on the same forms. You will not be disappointed. I also have a 1970 , it’s not Phenolic but a great shooter as well.

I have a newer one,,, do not like the grip... to thick. I also have a 1972 super Kodiak, the grip is smaller, and I like it better

Does anyone have any thoughts on how it shoots compared to the wood riser SK.

Apparently, the SK has few followers based on the minimal response.

I haven't shot a wood SK, but I have the Black Beauty and it is a great shooter. It has taken me a little bit to get used to the sound it makes (kinda ringy) on the shot, but I have no complaints about the bow it is excellent. I do agree that the grip is thick (back to belly in the throat), but I have big hands so it fits me well.

Good luck!

If the grip is important to you......try before you buy. There’s a big variation on Bear grips bow to bow. I shot several of new Super K’s a few years back at a big Sporting Goods store here in Michigan. As with all Bear bows, the grips are finished by hand and they’re all a little different. Just because you may have shot one that that somebody else had and loved the grip doesn’t guarantee the next one you get your hands on will be the same.

Yep, grips can vary a lot, and you need to try to handle one before you buy it. Every year Bear has them hanging on a rack at ETAR and each is slightly different from the other in the grip area.

As for no one getting back to you, there are likely a thousand threads on the Super Kodiak within the archives. It is a very popular bow and shoots great, and the old forms were used on the new ones and repaired as they wore down. Why would one be different than another? Other than mass weight and feel, the performance will be close enough to not make a difference.

I do favor the Phenolic over the wood riser . I like the extra mass weight

The Super kodiak's are Great bows. I like the vintage ones much better. I had some bad luck with the newer ones.

All my vintage ones were 60" and I hated the way they shot. I got a 64" phenolic in 2017. The throat of the grips a little big bu not hard to get used to. This ones much faster for me and is so quiet it has no silencers. The added weight makes it super accurate. Only problem is i need to buy another since my son has confiscated this one, lol.

I have a 68 SK, its a great shooting bow. Haven't shot a modern phenolic but compared to a lot of recurves I've owned and shot I would consider the 68's grip to be more smallish or narrow than large and fuller feeling in the hand. Its close to the 59 re-issue that I have too. As a contrast from that era I have a 72 Browning Cobra II that is much fuller in the throat and palm than the either the 68 SK or 59 Kodiak. I hunted with 68 SK this weekend. Its almost too pretty to take in the woods. I kinda' don't like having to worry about scratching it up, its more like a Sunday driver or snob appeal bow for 3d shoots. :)

I have a 1969 Black SK and a 2017 Black SK. they are both great shooting bows. Also have a 2016 regular SK. They all shoot well. The black SK grip is larger then a standard SK.

Did I hear Bear stopped making them for 2019

I have at least one of every year Super Kodiak made. My best shooters are the 67-69 models. Love the extra weight of the phenolic and they are dead in the hand at the shot. My 67 1/2 is a 64" 62 pounder, and really smokes an arrow ,and is very quiet with NO silencers and an endless string!

Perhaps the greatest mass-produced recurve ever made... (particularly the 64-inch models)… Shoot Straight, rare breed

Super Kodiak are great shooters for the weight and design. The timeless line makes this bow a classic. I like the most the 67-69 but also the later models are beautiful. I don’t know the most modern ones but I am sure you can’t go wrong with them either.
