Just curious as to how back set is measured on a longbow. I have a JET longbow that is totally mismarked. It reads Warthog on the limb but has a decent amount of back set to the limb and not string follow. So just wondering, thanks

Reflex. Lay it on a table and draw a 'straight line' through the riser and the full length of limbs. Then mark where the limb tips are in conjunction with that and measure the distance.

Run the straight line on the back edge of the riser...the furthest from the shooter.

Back set and reflex I think are two different terms. Reflex on a limb to me means the limbs exhibit a slight curve a bit back off the riser, but are straight off the riser for a few inches, usually starting a few inches down from the fade outs, back set or set back to the limbs mean the limbs lie in straight line back off the riser.
Anyways I was wondering what type of JET the bow I had is and wanted to make an accurate reading of it. Just so happens I also just took possession of a JET Wallace Special and just laid them side by side and the limb configuration is identical on both. I for the life of me don't know why it is marked Warthog when looking at the limb layout they both appear identical. Anyways thanks for all the info.

Reflex:
to bend, turn, or fold back to cause to undergo a reflex process (no mention of curve).
Recurve and Semi-Recurve:
NOUN archery a bow that curves forward at the ends, which straighten out under tension when the bow is drawn.

I run a measuring tape from tip to tip on the back of the bow and I measure the distance between the measuring tape and the back of the handle (middle of it). That's the back set.

Backset and reflex 'could have' the same measurements in a bow depending on design, but they may be quite different because they don't mean the same thing.
If a bow has 2" of deflex in the handle area and 3" of reflex in the outer limbs, how much backset does it have?
Backset is how far the handle is 'set back' behind the tips... but the amount of reflex in one or both limbs is only one factor relevant to that net amount.

I never heard about backset for RD bows, just for ASL. But maybe I am missing something.

You measure it the way that Draven said. Jet Archery makes a carbon backed bamboo Hill type with 2" of backset, two inches is a lot.

Put it against, a wall, floor or table with the back facing the floor, wall or table and measure at the handle. Jawge

I always scratch my head at this threads. Why not contact the bowyer directly and discuss what bows you have? He built them after all.

Put it against a wall. The actual amount of backset or string follow can vary a lot. Not all that important really. They all have a purpose.

Its an ASL as you all like to call them. It is not an R/D type of bow. I figured it out too. thanks
