With some glue injection, and some more wrap on the upper limb, I have Ol' Buck flexing and shooting again. Amazingly it seems since I thought he was finished. Anyway, I shot a dozen arrows today with no creaking or cracking, so I'll shoot a few more tomorrow. If he continues his good manners, I'll take him hunting again.

I hope Ol' Buck hangs in there for you George. He's a nice old bow. I had the pleasure of shooting him for a month a few years back. Brings back a fond memory or two. Several times during the month I had him I just sat and held him and pondered all the good people who had shot him too and all the miles he had traveled. Every time I see the name Ol' Buck I instantly go back to the time I had him. Thanks again for letting me use Ol' Buck.

Good hear George. I kinda creak and crack more than I use to when I flex out in the woods these days too. :) I wish you many more shots from her.

I would like to hear the story of this bow.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 17-Oct-18

It's a very long story crowfoot. The short version is, I got the bow in 1992...killed a buck with it that year. In 2006 I started sending it around the country and Canada too, and it travelled six+ years by someone new each month. I retired it a few years ago but now have it shooting again. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking....so far. It's from the early to mid 1940's, made by York Archery.

Thanks George..I've been around here 20+ but I must have missed that.

I remembered the pass around of old Buck, George, I’am not sure but wasn’t Buck your Father in laws Bow. Any how good to see it shooting agin.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 17-Oct-18

No Wayne, Buck was my father in law. I named the bow after him. You were close though.

crowfoot, there were all kinds of reports on Ol' Buck during those years. He was in Canada also, and took some deer and wild boar as well. That lasted six years.

That is an amazing story to go along with an Amazing old Lemon wood bow. Ole Buck sure has been around. Old bows were meant to be shot. And ole Buck sure has proven that. Good to see him back out in the woods. If that old bow could talk it sure would have some stories to tell...

From: RAU
Date: 06-Nov-18

Nice George! What wood would that be?

From: White Falcon
Date: 06-Nov-18

Great George! Have you done an more on the story?

From: Pointer
Date: 06-Nov-18

Nice work George!...that old boy loves to hunt...take him in the woods and enjoy

From: RymanCat
Date: 06-Nov-18

Go out and shoot a deer George. Hope ya get one.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 06-Nov-18

RAU, it's lemonwood (degame). Back in the day we could get that from Cuba for cheap and it can be just cut into shape irrespective of grain. This one has clarified calfskin backing (material used then for banjo heads) and has lived way past it's supposed lifetime.

Someone asked, "how fast is that bow?" I said probably just a bit faster than a dead-run. I have no idea but I do know it has taken big bodied deer and some hogs, and that was in the 'senior' stages of it's life. It's whisper quiet and has a lot of string-follow, but it will kill any game you need to take with it.
