This is a Bitzenburger alignment jig. The company offered me a new jig for it. Not many around.

Fayes smokers clip. These things clipped on to your quiver and held your cigarette while you shot.

An aluminum nock and a strange insert that goes in a #7 Microflite and uses a 5/16 field point.

In the photo with the Bear site is a Bear plate, Tamerlane zipper pull from a bow case and two Bear quiver mounts. One is plain and the other is rubber coated.

Still have an "instinctor" patch and a Bear powder pouch just like above. Like the v hunting sight as I remember those well. It was based on the diameter of the target such as a deer's ribcage. Remember some of the other stuff too. Fun post.

Some of us used to make those brush rests out of mascara brushes before they got popular. Never liked the Bear sights they put on the 1964 and newer bows. Turned the Tamerlane from a beautiful bow (the 1963 models) to an almost beautiful bow with not so good mechanical stuff hanging on it. Did not like sights in those days, but many of the best shooters shot with them.

Some of those gadgets and archery tools came out of work shops out-back of someone's house. Those work shops were a product of our parents and grandpareant from the depression who would build woodworking and small fix-it shops in the back yard and go out back and build furniture, radios and electrical gadgets, and whatever was needed. Wife has wire stirrers from that time in her kitchen gadget collection made by what we call wire art now.

Seems like in the late fifties/early sixties when I first read some of those "Archery" magazines at the scout hut, there were lots of archery inventions by folks still used to making whatever they needed or could dream up. This is why your post is so great Jon Stewart as the days of the popular rosewood recurves were full of small gadgets such as you posted.

I don't have any info on the hunt and their website doesn't include bowhunters. I didn't see any mention of archery in the history of the hunt either. Maybe i was looking in the wrong place.

Seems like the modern version of the hunt is a "good old boys club" for firearms only.

Anybody have any better information?

Ugly Coyote - Like you I have heard of this hunt but know relatively little about it. Mostly what I know is just bits and pieces picked up over the years from various sources. Further, I am not even sure what I heard is 100% accurate, so what I say below may or may not be correct.

Apparently, the One Shot Antelope Hunt was a hunt sponsored and conducted by a group of archery tackle manufacturers in conjunction with the city of Lander, Wyoming. It was by invitation only and was held once a year for a few years in the 1950s. Participation was by invitation only and very few individuals were invited to attend/participate each year. Further, those invited generally were noted celeberties and/or well-known bowhunters/archers. Seems to me I recall the names Guy Madison, Howard Hill, and Larry Whiffen Sr. (among others) being associated with or invited on this hunt. Apparently it was considered quite an honor to be invited to attend this hunt and relatively few did it over the years.Supposedly each bowhunter was allowed just one arrow, shoot it and your hunt was over. I suspect the hunt was more about fame & fortune and camaraderie for celeberties and for publicising bowhunting than actually killing an animal.

Again, the above info is just what I seem to recall, I have not heard this hunt mentioned or referred to in at least 25 years so my memory is fuzzy on it. If someone knows more or can correct what I posted, I invite your comments. A friend of mine, his dad went on the hunt. I'll see if I can track him down and get some more info. This might be a piece of archery history worth learning about and preserving.

Huck Finn - That looks like one of the Fleetwood brand fletchers made by C.E. Love of Denver. I had one as a kid back in the 1950s and can recall using it. I think I got it for Christmas in 1956 so the fletcher would date from at least that far back.

Old Browning Slip-On Quiver. It came from a Browning Wasp Hunting Set I had. Two were in the box, I kept one.

What casekiska said about the one shot antelope hunt is correct.

On the first hunt, Larry Wiffen, Howard Hill and Guy Madison were invited. Guy had to back out because of a movie commitment, and Fred Bear was his replacement. That's where the problem between Fred and Howard started. Howard had killed a goat but with his second arrow running at 90 yards. he and his guide were returning to camp. Fred Bear was trying to see if he could kill two antelope with one arrow, waiting for them to line up properly. The pickup not driven by Howard inadvertently scared the antelope at Fred's blind. Fred blamed Howard for the mishap. That lead to a life long dislike between the two. Here is the antelope Howard Killed, he gave the horns to Larry Wiffen Jr.

Made a mistake on the distance it was 134 yards. and here is the photo of the horns.

Interesting story aromakr. FYI, it was Larry Whiffen Jr. who told me that story many years ago, probably back in the eighties. Jr. and I hunted together for probably 30 years or so. Larry is now living in TN, I'll have to ask him if he still has those antelope horns. By the way, I don't believe Larry Sr. ever did get an antelope for himself. He passed away in September 1960 just a few days before the famed WI Bowhunters Assoc. "Necedah" Broadhead Shoot. At the time he was President of the association.

I like the way Ben Pearson glued two pieces of hickory together, with the grain run-off running off into the center of the limb, was an innovative way to avoid the limb breaking. I had thiat same child’s archery set, and was impressed with how they did that. I wondered why no one else has done that with adult bows. I suppose with the advent of fiberglass, it wasn’t necessary.
