Anyone else shoot .400 spine for this poundage range? 45@28 62" longbow

From: BowAholic
Date: 20-Aug-18

not me...I'm shooting 500 spine with my extremely D/R longbow, but I do shoot 'normal' 125~145g points/broadheads. You might do well with the 400s and some heavy weight up front.

Not saying it can't work, but...what point weight are you using?

From: Aimsmall15

145grain

600-700

400 can be shot just add weight fwd. 500 to 600 better. Try it and see what you think and then let them know .

I played around with the weight forward thing a lot. Not my cup of tea. Nothing negative to say. I just prefer .600 with all of my bows which are 45-50 pounds at my 28” draw with 145 grain points. You can get it to work. I just prefer less front heavy set ups.

I’m shooting GT 600s with 125 up front on my 40# to 44# longbows.

They are full length to by the way

What is your draw length, Brandon ?

What does the arrow measure from throat of nock to back of point ?

From: Ihunts2much

I did shoot that set up. I got tired of shooting to the left all the time. Full length 500s and 600s for me.

From: Aimsmall15

I tried bare shafting the 500s and 400s and the full length 500s worse. They should be right on that's why I'm confused

From: Texomahunter

500 spine on that weight for me with anywhere from 125 to 160 up front.

I shoot 400 GT Trads full length 43@28 PLX with a 30.5" draw. I use 50 grain inserts with 125 grain fp or 11 grain inserts with 165 grain fp. They bare shaft perfect for me :)

There are lots of particulars missing from the equation for anyone to really say for sure.

How far is the bow before or past center the way you have it set up? What kind of string material are you using? As well as your draw length and shaft length as asked earlier?

They should be stiff. But, if they are 32" long, you have a low stretch string, the bow is clsoe to or past center, and you are drawing 28" or more, maybe not.

Full length with 250s if its cut past center with high performance string and little to know string silencers

I’ve found full-length .500s to be too stiff for good flight from my recurves in the low #50s (@ 27” or so, AMO).

Yes, I can get them to settle out and hit down the middle if I use enough feather, but why not just use something that’s about right to begin with?

Martin Savannah, 58@29. 12 strand hi perf string. GT trad 400s cut to 30 in. Had to use 50 gn inserts and 145 gn points to tune. You’re going to have to put a bunch of weight on the front to get good flight with 45 lbs.

Sounds way too stiff to me.

What is your measured draw length?

From: jaz5833
Date: 21-Aug-18

My set-up is 500 spine, cut 28", 125 tips, 4" shields x3, split finger, and nocking point 5/8" above center. This is on a vintage 69" recurve using a B50 flemish string.

I have a Satori. 44 pounds at my 28.5” draw. I have loads of 500’s and 600’s. Nope, it wants 400’s. I’m shooting 175 gn tips with the factory inserts. Bare shafts perfectly. I tried to get the lesser spines arrows to work. I tried 2016’s too.

I talked to Jim Casto Jr about it as he has a couple of Satoris. He said the same thing happened to him. He told me ya have to feed them what they want.

This bow is tuned for perfect arrow flight. Bare shaft and with broad heads. I don’t understand why it needs them, but I’m feeding it what it wants and very happy with the results. Jim

I draw a bit over 28 inches and 500's just aren't flying good at all. Just doesn't make sense. Maybe my crappy release as something to do with it lol.

From: Biathlonman

I've had a few that wanted 250 grains on the front of a 29" .400.

From: smokey

I shoot 400's GT. I shoot them from my Whippen Stick longbow, 46@27. They are 29" with 5" feathers and 145 gr field points. That combo shoots well for me.
