I find myself carrying way more than I need. Let’s get down to the essentials. What do you carry?

From: heftyhunter
Date: 18-Aug-18

Toilet paper, extra tab, flash light, whistle, candy bar extra string. Tow rope , small knife

From: Therifleman
Date: 18-Aug-18

A case copperlock, camenga compass, tags, zip ties, everready headlamp, flashlight, ink pen, wicked tough tree saw, tp for marking, gloves and facemask--- all strapped to bottom of seat of my lone wolf stand or in vest harness pockets.

From: grizz
Date: 18-Aug-18

Two knives, tp, compass, deer drag, water, trail markers, extra glove, fire kit and anything I want to eat that day.

License/pen, gloves, thermocell if needed, flashlight, granola bar, drink if it’s hot. Compass, grunt tube if needed, extra bow hooks, face mask (sometimes) 2 woodsman buck knives. If I’m mentiring and we’re lucky I dress the deer w kid. I than clean the knife and give it to them as a momento. Something I like doing and it makes the kid’s day. My first deer was about 40 years ago, I still have the knife so I know the it would have merit w some kids

Field dressing knife, TP and hand sanitizer, sharpie to sign my tag, zip ties to attach tag, headlamp, lighter, flagging tape, phone and or camera, compass, Cliff bar or similar and a full water bladder. I think that is it for the minimum.

From: Longcruise

Torges seat, headlamp, Paracord, knives, compass, lots of water, some food, TP, pen, matches, extra calls, camera, knife sharpener, a few first aid items, sometimes rain gear, game bags (enough for one elk).

That's mine. The tin holds emergency supplies as well as doubling as a cook tin, or drinking cup. Add a bottle of water, or a filter straw depending on where I'm going.

I’m determined to lighten the load this year.

A lot of good pack ideas. Besides the most basics already mentioned and seasonal changes aside, from experience I always include at least my minimum "first aid kit" of a tweezers and some bandaids; roll of plastic electrical tape; a small flashlight and spare batteries as backup to my headlamp; a second (get it?) quality compass in case of a dark night tracking job; spare bow string; and at least a rain jacket that can serve as extra cover in case of having to stay out late or over night. Last several years I manage all this in my Catquiver IV with the belt pack. From elk hunts to just down the road on public land here in WI. PS: Those of us that have been "turned around"(never "lost") always carry a second compass, to confirm that the first one is correct.

TOOOOO much! Every year I take things out, and end up needing them. :( :(

From: Dkincaid

3 knives 4 rubber gloves some hot hands a back up string rangefinder cell phone battery pack and some cliff bars

From: DarrinG
Date: 19-Aug-18

1/2 roll flattened TP, Section of paracord, 2 small flashlights (one a headlamp), 2 butane lighters, 1 fresh set of extra batteries for each flashlight, a grunt tube, a pack of HS Fresh Earth wafers, gloves of the weight for the conditions, a bandana, a bottle of water and an extra screw-in tree step. Knives are on my belt and in my pocket so not in the pack.

From: DarrinG
Date: 19-Aug-18

Oh yeah, and a pack of Stokers Apple or Peach leaf!

From: MCS
Date: 19-Aug-18

Thanks guys. Just the necessities from now on.

David mentioned rubber gloves. I always have a couple of pair of surgical gloves with me. Keeps the blood off your hands when field dressing a deer. I don't worry so much about blood borne diseases on deer but it so much cleaner and neater than having sticky bloody hands on the way back to camp.

From: RymanCat
Date: 20-Aug-18

Sugar sweets or a soda in case I go so low and bandages and bandaids if I get cut. Extra string, lic. knife a few other things but not much in a fanny pack. Rubber gloves too.

From: PEARL DRUMS
Date: 20-Aug-18

Several pairs of latex gloves, extra flash light/headlamp, small Fiskars folding saw, a few bow hooks and a spare gear rope.

From: N. Y. Yankee
Date: 20-Aug-18

Extra knife, sharpener, field dressing kit, license and tags, zip tie to attach tag, extra shooting glove, extra bowstring in plastic case, bow stringer, sm flashlight, headlamp, drag rope, sm jar face camo, turkey mouth call, sm bottle of water, L.D. rain poncho, knit hat, toilet paper folded up in ziploc for tracking, pbj sammich, pair field glasses, FAK, 2 55gal contractor bags, signal mirror and Storm rescue whistle, compass and probably a couple more things I forgot. This seems like a lot of stuff but most all of it i actually pretty light weight. If you try, you can get small, lightweight gear that will do the job. I dont know what the pack weighs but I would bet money it's around 8-10 pounds.

And TP in a baggy, never go without it after age 30 :), just some good advice for you young bucks.

From: 76aggie

^^^^^^^^ Amen to the above.

Always a can of Copenhagen...don't think anyone said that yet!? HAHA

you guys must crap a lot

Tin of Skoal, knife, water, snacks, flashlight, all I need

From: new2trad
Date: 20-Aug-18

I'd rather forget my bow than head into the woods without toilet paper. A lot of years of missing socks and shirt sleeves when I was a young buck have taught me that. The few other things I always try to bring with are a knife, flashlight, compass, rubber gloves, license/tags, zip ties, water, snacks, copenhagen, and binos.

From: Bluefeather
Date: 20-Aug-18

Headlamp, compass, fixed blade knife,1st aid kit, lightweight rain suit, waterproof matches or lighter, water, snacks,a couple of hand wipes and TP.

From: N. Y. Yankee
Date: 21-Aug-18

I always carry 3 ways to make a fire when I'm out in the woods. Lighter and tinder stick, ferrocerium rod and petro cotton, flint and steel with some char cloth. There again all that stuff, in a small plastic container, under a pound. That would be included in my total pack weight.

From: Linecutter
Date: 21-Aug-18

TP also stands for tracking paper. I have used it many times marking blood trails while tracking, and you don't need very big pieces and it is biodegradable. Never go to the woods without plenty of it. Backpack in most of my clothes so I don't sweat (hunt public land), knife, drag strap, water, rubber dish gloves for gutting, pen to fill out my tag, and a set of hand pruners. DANNY
