This question goes along with Onehairs thread on ground hunting and seats. Does anyone regularly practice sitting on the ground with no seat other than may be a cushion? If so how accurate can you be? I used to practice for a couple months before Spring Gobbler season when I used to have the time to hunt them with a bow. I did it that way because I didn't use a blind and I wanted to be mobile. I still practice this way some every season before elk hunting because I gave been caught off guard several times snoozing in the middle of the day and was forced to shoot sitting or in a low crouch.

I have no problem shooting that way inside 20 yards, practice it quite often.

From: Slick

What hawkeye in PA said no problem here.

can do it fine , but prefer rolling up to one knee-very stable like that

I have a hard time shooting sitting while in a tree stand ,never enough room .Probably missed a few shots because of it .I do sit in a blind when turkey hunting ,got 1 but with a compound sitting

Obviously not first choice, but have made it work on a few occasions.

I practice shooting from my knees all the time. When you stillhunt being on your knees helps a lot to break up the human form.

I tried shooting sitting flat on my bottom with my back against a tree at a Jake at less than ten yards with a self bow. Tough shot and the arrow went between his legs.

I do practice off my hunting stool and have no problem. I practice getting a shot off in a second. Not really that hard if you have your bow ready and all you have to do is draw and release. If your hunting turkeys you can get a shot off if you can shoot fast. Sometimes they'll freeze for a second before hightailing it.

First off I an’it that mobile to be on the ground anymore. I use a stool. Actually I find at hunting range it only takes a few practice arrows to be on target.

I shoot from a sitting position from a ground blind and tree stands. I practice shooting from a sitting position on the ground quite a bit, not as much from elevated stands. Regardless, I have never had difficulty making shots from the sitting position from a tree stand.

In fact, I think I shoot better that way. With my butt on a seat, even if my leg(s) start shaking or get weak in the heat of the moment, I'm still in a solid position for the shot. Shooting from the sitting position from a tree stand also cuts down on the shot angle. And, of course, because I spend most of my time in the stand sitting, there's no standing movement to spook the approaching critter.

I always build a blind and use my old aluminum chair, so I practice seting down but at close range dr

I've killed a bunch of deer sitting from treestands. I practice shooting while sitting quite often from my little camp chair.

I practice while sitting on the ground. The only problem is I can only shoot to the left side and to almost directly in front. Right hand shooter so left arm is bow arm. So I really try to avoid getting caught sitting unless it's a nice afternoon and I am eating a sandwich or something.

Best to do it on one knee. Spot and stalk offers few other opportunities, at least here in my area of the west.

From: Ron LaClair

I shot my first deer sitting on my butt on the ground with a 66" recurve. I shot with the bow in a horizontal position.

I've also hunted sitting on the ground on the edge of a hole with my feet and legs in the hole. A little brush around me makes for a good blind with a low profile.

I just came in from a shooting session...at 25 yards I was spot on hitting my hanging milk jugs while sitting down. I actually shoot better sitting and do practice that a bunch pre-season.

As long as you are solid from the waste down, it's just like standing. Shouldn't be a problem.

What George said. I don't shoot sitting down on the ground, because I don't sit flat on the ground. My favorite shot I kneeling on both knees.

From: B arthur
Date: 13-Aug-18

George, I find it alot different. To clear the ground I have to cant my bow near horizontal which in turn forces me to lean forward to keep my head in line. Im not a great shot by any means but sitting on the ground without a stool takes some considerable practice for me to be consistent and that's under 15 yards.

From: dean

There are certain situations that the butt on the ground shots don't work for me, like shooting up hill or across a slope to my bow hand side when the bow hand side is up hill. I have shot a number of deer and a couple of turkeys shooting down hill with bow arm on the down hill side. Quite often on flatter ground the slightest amount of vegetation can be a problem. An 8" inch high log can make quite a lot of difference for bow clearances. For that, a Nifty Seat with the long ground spike is much easier. I hunt with 66" and 68" longbows.

I think the poster asked if you shoot sitting on the GROUND with only maybe a cushion....NO stools....chairs etc. The answer for most would be....no.

Sitting on the ground flat on your behind is a very difficult position to shoot a bow especially a trad bow which is generally much longer than a compound.

Never had the need to sit when killing an animal. Here is where I hunt. Sitting would just get some ticks on you. There are only MAYBE 1-2 deer every 5 square miles. Got to move, find one and kill it.

I have a butt pad that I snap to my belt, I have only ever found one blow down that properly fit me bumm. When I do sit on the ground, hoping to get a down hill slope shot, I quite often level a spot in the ground for my sitter bones. Sitting sideways on a slope even with a slight tilt will get me in the low back. Although the low position allows one to get by with a lot for game spotting you, if a deer is in the wrong position for a shot turning to get into shooting position or getting a knee under me is most of the time an effort in futility, unless there is some very good cover.

this is a debate my cousin and I have every year. He says stand to shoot, I shoot sitting.

I think if you practice sitting then shoot sitting

never seen a difference

I will never again hunt sitting my rear end on the ground. Doing that caused me to muff a gimme shot on a really nice caribou. I will shoot sitting down though whether it is on some type of portable camp stool or sitting in a tripod. I practice shooting that way regularly.

After you sit down, how do you get back up?...:>)

From: song dog

Ron I roll over onto my hands and knees. Then up one leg at a time with the help of bushes tree limbs. Then it's hobble around til the feeling comes back to all parts of my body. Then I try and remember where I put my bow and arrows let alone where I am.

My love of sitting has caused me to want thunk with a short bow like a 48" Bear or the 50" Browning cobra, problem is, I could not shoot very far with hunting accuracy with either one. I could take a few accurate shots and then get a whopper of a miss. I have a carbon walking stick that can get as short as an arrow, it rides in my quiver when I don't need it. I need it to get up, because of my bad low back. The above picture has problems for me. The quiver is in the wrong spot. I usually take a couple of arrows out and set in a convenient position.

If you split the photo of John Schulz, you won't know if he is standing or sitting since his form is the same.

I have never had a need to shoot from sitting on the ground; probably because I never sat on the ground to hunt. I still stand most of the time as in my opinion, it makes a better profile when you are in the trees than does sitting. I'm too antsy to sit long anyway so the occasional stump or log works for me.

From: ny yankee

You can shoot like that if you practice it. The trick is getting lined up in your blind. You have a much more limited range of motion while sitting so you have to orient your seat so that you are pointed in the direction you expect the game to come from.

From: Windlaker_1

95% of my practice is sitting.

Almost NEVER have had a shot while I was standing on the ground.

I don't think I ever took a practice shot while sitting on the ground. I never sit that way while hunting either.

What I need is a butt pad on a lazy Susan, so I can twirl around on my butt to optimize my stiff old body to just the right position. A nice padded bar stool that can spin around like I remember as a kid, pissing everyone off in the down town restaurant, trying to see how fast I could get it spinning before i fell off, except with the legs cut off..

Very interesting because whilst technically not sitting on the ground what about folk who regularly shoot from wheel chairs or mounted archers shooting from a saddle. There are the Schultz the Hill and Ferguson type folk who can shoot very accurately from a myriad of positions .Sitting is not too difficult to learn.Just as long as your shot sequence is consistant you are usually good to go.Well worth practicing as one does not know what position you may encounter in hunting situations.OSR

Sitting on a pad on the ground like one that's attached to turkey vest.Shooting from that position I tend to to shoot a little high. But with a little practice the shots get better as I hone these skills. Ron is right about getting up,my son teeses me all the time about that. Because from a sitting position I lay on one side trying to get up. He says I look like a swimsuit model, except I usually wear jeans or cargo pants.
