I don't know if this old bow was ever fed properly, but I got it in the mail yesterday morning before work, got home from work, put a new string on the bow, tuned some arrows up, and was able to stalk upbbn on this hog last night. Hit far back, got a pass through, but not good blood on the arrow, so I pulled out and found it this morning. It was quartering away enough that I got the good stuff, and it only went 50 yards.

And that should be proof enough of the effectiveness of those great old models.

My first real bow was a Paul Bunyan. Wish I still had it. Somehow got lost in one of the many moves I made over the years. Mine was green with a red grip.

Paul (Bunyan) would be proud!

First of all Pat Congrats on your first kill with your new bow! Man! you did that fast! I know some on here aren't found of all fiberglass bows. And talk them down. But in a hunter's hands the Green Paul Bunyan has proved itself once again. Just like it did many times before when it first came out. Well I would say your off to a great start. What arrow broad head combination did you use to take down that pig? Yes Paul Bunyan would be proud! Heck I am proud! Well done Pat! Well done...

From: pdk25
Date: 12-Aug-18

I am not going to say that the arrows were perfectly tuned, but they were hitting good enough for me out to 15-20 yards with broadheads. I only probably shot a total of 20-30 arrows trying to find one that worked. I used a black eagle instinct 350, with 100 grain outsert, and 225 grain Vandieman single bevel broadhead. That same head had now taken 3 hogs, an armadillo, and a raccoon. Pretty soft metal, but real easy to sharpen, a little wider than most singel bevels, and seem to stay sharp long enough to get the job done.

Date: 12-Aug-18

Very Impressive. Things get only get better once you fine tune that Bunyan bow. Good luck!

Congrats bud! Also, saw this post on FB with the pic of a draw length check clothes pin. Never thought of that personally, but love the idea and used it to double check my draw length this afternoon. Thanks for sharing.

Grats for making a point. But one question: is the hog still eatable after 1 night in summer days? I am just curious for a possible future experience.

From: Texomahunter
Date: 12-Aug-18

Congrats. Saw you on the Oklahoma archery facebook page too. What part of the state are you from?

From: pdk25
Date: 12-Aug-18

Ada, Oklahoma.

Draven, the meat looked to be good, but I didn't want to chance it, since it angled through the abdomen. Otherwise, I would absolutely have used the meat. Have done it many times before. Wish I had been sure and recovered it last night, but my fields and the buzzards are still happy.

From: pdk25
Date: 12-Aug-18

You are still better off taking care of them right away if you can. I have killed around 100 in a little over a year. Most of the time, I get them fairly quickly, gut them, hose them out, put ice in the cavity, and between the legs and on the shoulder if big enough, then get up at dawn, skin it, quarter it, put it on ice, then go to work. Did 11 in 11 days in one stretch. Prettt tired at work, lol.

Kudos dude! Had a Pearson fibreglass longbow back in the '60s, killed a rabbit but only peed off the squirrels. Have been buying those oldie but goodies here and there to outfit my growing grandkids. Got one similar to yours but much lower poundage ands it's a ply-flex with the simulated plastic horn nocks....very cool lil bow!

In capable hands, these bows will deliver! As you just proved.

Frisky cira 2016...

"All of my life, I've secretly desired a Paul Bunyan model 100. Back in the day, this ad shows it was $32.95. However, it was a custom! It has a "power surge!" I thought only my Grail had that! Anyway, I think some of you Widda owners should consider this bow, as the performance is similar and the price is better. Joe"

LOL!

From: Frisky
Date: 13-Aug-18

Yes, I believe I did write the above statement. I do consider the PB on par with a Widda!

After testing one last week the fact that you took an animal with a Paul Bunyan glass bow does not surprise me at all.We will hear more stories like this in the future with glass bows as more of us shoot and learn that these bows will kill ,no problem. Good for you.You got the ball rolling.Sorry you could not eat the meat.Keep em flying.

From: pdk25

Frisky, I was thinkingbbn of teasing the widow folks, saying this bow was a just a little slower, noisier, and with a more handshock than your average laminated bow, but should be an easy transition for those accustomed to a Black. I held off because I figured someone would take me seriously and get offended.

Frisky, being that you have joined this PB thread and stated how a PB compares to a BW, how much better is the PB than that em-Bear-assing TD you have?

From: Sawtooth (Original) Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 13-Aug-18

Good job, man. That's a nice un, D.

From: Frisky
Date: 13-Aug-18

I will say the Bear TD is a better deal than a Widda. It costs a lot less and is a much better bow. The PB is also a better deal than a Widda. Same shooting qualities and much lower price.

I am going to keep mine with me with glove, arrows, quiver, and arm guard in the trunk of my car along with a feed bag stuffed with plastic, and a dot on the bag.You do not have to worry about the bow coming apart ,and you can shoot just about any were at any time.Let a friend shoot the PB last night, and he really liked it,and he shoots a Martin Saber.Keep em Flying.

Sweet job of putting the old fiberglass back to work. Never had that model but had several others that were a blast to shoot and to hunt with. Wish That I had my dad's, loved it. The pig never knew that it was shot with what some would call a lesser bow, don't figure that it cared much one way or the other because it did the job just fine. Been a lot of memories made with those old bows. Well done Sir, from Arkansas near the state line.

This Paul Bunyan model 300 was around 70 pounds when I shot that hog but I draw it a little longer right handed and it is closer to 72 pounds. I posted some stats on it and I believe that it shot an arrow right around 10 greens per pound at 177 ft./s at my long draw length. Now I have also killed pigs with a Paul Bunyan 100 that is only scaling maybe 52 at 30. Great Bows. Another thing is that I think the hand shock is greatly diminished when using a fast flight string. There is no reason not to use a fast flight string with a fiberglass bow. It improves the performance dramatically. I posted the Krono numbers on this bow as well but I can’t remember what they were. Somewhat less.off the top of my head I want to say 164 ft./s, but the arrow was close to 11 Green per pound.
