what do you like cat whiskers yarn puffs ?

What do you feel dampens sound more?

Im using rubber whiskers now

From: gettin closer

I also use the rubber whiskers. I like that they do not get heavy in the rain/walking through brush after a rain.

I cut them in half so they are shorter and have a total of 4 smaller bundles of rubber whiskers. Not sure of the brand that I use.

To answer your question about what dampens sound more? I could not tell you as I was never able to swap strings quick enough to keep my ears in tune. Besides, I tend to shoot heavier arrows and that helps quiet things down a good bit too.

I think rubber is the best all around for silence and durability, but I wont use it on my selfys. They all get some form of fur with muskrat being my favorite, and beaver and bunny a close second.

Some bow don't need much of anything, others do. My wife has lots of acrylic yarn so that is generally what I use. It usually doesn't take much. Right now I have some of Craig's (Monkeyball) silencers that I'm using and they work great too.

I make my own puff balls like Rick Barbee shows on his website. They work great.

Usually fur and not much, but my longbow from Jeff really doesn't need help being silenced. I do use yarn, but prefer fur. Just personal taste thing.

I have used beaver fur for a few years now and have always liked it. On 2 of my bows at the moment I have put those small rubber pieces on my string. When I bought my Hoyt Satori it came with 2 sets and had never used them. I have to say they don’t look as good but they do as good a job as anything else and if your out shooting in the rain they don’t through water all back in your face. LOL

I like the short rubber cat whiskers and small wool yarn puffs. I often put two of each on the string just to hedge my bet. - John

I also try different string materials. Most bows shoot quieter with low-stretch strings, but some are quieter with B-55. Depends on the limb geometry. - John

Beaver and rubber.

"Beaver and Rubber"........haha

I think an old skin flick had the same title.

Jim Neaves at Centaur archery has the Navajo wool silences with the natural lanolin in them. They are the bomb and I think tied up with spider wire type material. One little pluck in the rain and they clear nicely.

He sells them directly and 3rivers also carries them for him.

I just make my own out of wool yarn. They work and they are cheap to make.

Rubber...find a online fishing gear site & buy ya some different colors. You'll have more than you ever need. Cheap too.

Wool puffs trimmed down to about the size of a shooter marble, for those old school folks that know the difference between a regular marble and a shooter.

Like ---getting closer--- I can't switch them out quick enough to tell. I use a lot of yarn, cause we have it in so many colors and it is cheap. I like the spiders a little better for wet weather. My longbows and self bow don't need any but they get fur just for looks.Tune brace height for quietness first.>>>----> Ken

I also really like those Two Tracks wool scallops such as those pictured by Zmonster. They can easily be removed and used on a new string unlike all the others.

I have yarn and catwhiskers on different bows, I think the catwhiskers work best. JMHO, YMMV

From: 3Ditional

Prefer catwhiskers myself. On a recurve, you may also want to try using some calf hair string groove silencers.

From: Live2hunt

I use those Beaver Balls. They silence to me like the others and I just like the looks of them on my bow.

JP made a video some time ago and he was using the outer layer of the paracord. It works like a dream.

Still using beaver balls on B-50 strings on old bows. They help some but not as efficient as rubber or wool, but I like'em.

catwhiskers (rubber). doesn't take much to do the job, moisture doesn't matter.

I have one bow with catwhiskers , they work great as well

From: bowhunt

Wool puffs work best for me for silencing sound by stopping string oscillation faster.I use a generous amount of wool and then trim into a tight smaller denser ball.

I have used catwhiskers alot in the past and they work great and dont collect burrs.

Beaver or mink work descent and do look good. They must be wrapped very tightly around the string or they will make more noise. You dont want them loose at all.

If you don't care to make your own, Two Tracks wool scallops have been the best of the MANY different silencers I've tried and used over the years.

From: firekeeper

I use good natural wool puffs. I've liked Bateman puffs and Hush Puppies best so far; Navajo wool is excellent too but a little pricier for no better performance. I haven't had the problem of them picking up briars, guess they're not as much of a problem where I live as some other places.

Cat whiskers would be my second preference. I like that they don't absorb water, but wool seems to be quieter on my bows, and has a little more character.

Cat whiskers probably work best but they just don't look good on a traditional or primitive bow. Save the rubber for the wheel bows...they need all the help they can get to quiet down. I prefer puffs for my recurves and fur for my primitive bows.

Best silencers I have ever used is Marine rope. I buy in half-inch size and unbraids in 1/4 inch sections and cut two inches long, tight into the string half and is waterproof. Dyneema construction and is lite weight, silences the string, easy to install, will last for years.

Hope it is OK just to share a couple thoughts: I like Beaver Balls, but I should go out and shoot a nutria and make my own Beaver Balls out of the nutria fur. I have watched some string silencers when shot during a rainy day. When the string is released a double puff of water explodes at the shot. I wonder if that could spook the animal? As for silencing the string, it works well to have an arrow that absorbs the energy. My experience has been at times that a light arrow might cause more vibration. I like my string to just look cool.Wooly puffs also can collect lots of seeds and burrs in the late summer. Now what if I made my string silencers out of material that would double as fire starter should I get myself lost? Have fun.

Wool puffs between the string bundles seem to work the best for me. I’ve also got some mink fur on my Recurve that works real well.

Mostly Iv'e used wooly boogers with lanolin.Since I used them up I've gone to fur.On my longbow's I cut them in half.

Same as Sam Dunham for the same reasons; Dyneema rope 12 strand cut to 1.5 inches and separated into two bundles. Look up/search heterodyning; I use this spacing of the silencers to cancel out the vibrations that the string makes upon release.
