I talked to a friend today I have not seen in awhile and asked about his hunting/shooting. He said he tore a ligament in his (draw) wrist some time ago and can no longer draw a bow. His fingers work ok but seems to be no strength in the wrist area for pulling a string. Outside of a mouth tab, does anyone have a suggestion I can pass along for drawing/releasing with a damaged draw wrist? Thanks in advance.

Wrist release

Tie on a string loop like the compound guys have and use a wrist strap release aid. Gonna have to modify the old anchor point though.

Curious on the answers to this one.....I broke my wrist on my string hand (chauffeurs fracture) July 5th and have to see an Orthopedic Surgeon tomorrow morning. If no surgery's required I'll be in a cast for a minimum of another 6 1/2 weeks

A ligament tear seems like a worst deal than a break. I broke my bow hand wrist in four places. Was in a cast for six weeks with two pins in my wrist. Took me another few months of rehab. I do know ligaments and tendons are not to be messed with. Would that wrist strap release that was talked about here last year work? It was a combo of a tab and strap.

If the wrist strap hurts him it should be possible to figure a rig to put most of the draw weight on the elbow. - lbg

What lbg. said. I shot with a man one time who had made a release for lack of a better term, that attached to his arm just below his elbow.

I think if I remember right that the rig had a strap like a regular strap release. He wrapped the strap around the string and held it in his hand, but the pressure from the draw was on his mid arm.

He shot pretty dang well too.

This may sound stupid, but athletic tape on shaved skin does miracles for that sort of stuff. I have two broken wrists and all sorts of arthritis from sports. Tape can help you develop strength in one specific position, and you can work from there. You will have to learn how to tape for it, but youtube is full of that.

Arne has a 1h+ video where he is teaching somebody to shoot and he uses an elbow strap as teaching tool. Find that video and maybe get in touch with him togive you some info on how to make one for your friend.

Learn to shoot with the other hand

Have your friend get on the internet and find out which foods, vitamins and minerals help the body build strong connective tissue and there is also likely exercises that will help get his/her strength back in those parts. Hippocrates said "Let your food be your medicine and let your medicine be your food." Best to them.

Get yourself one of those Ace wrist wraps they are black and cushioned and see if that helps you. Looks good also and has a lot of support.

Drop bow weight, as RymanCat mentioned wrist support or wrap with a 2 inch Ace Wrap to support the wrist. An exercise to strengthen the wrist and forearm: Tie a rope around the middle of a piece of broom handle or 1x1, attach the other end of the rope to a grocery bag, put 1# bags of beans in the bag. With arms extended wind up the rope using both hands from the floor to the handle, then unwind down to the floor. Do this 4-5 times when it becomes to easy add more bags of beans. DANNY

The Talon release may help that.

Sorry to hear of your ligament tear, it sounds painful. I broke my left(bow) wrist in a car collision. 10 years after the bean shaped bone at the base of my thumb healed, it was painful shooting certain bows. I ended up using one of those black wrist straps at work and shooting. I can recommend those, they do help and they’re available everywhere.

Im not a expert but I have seen people with wrist braces and it seems that one could be made to shoot.

The first thing your buddy needs to do is talk to his doctor. Find the out from the doc as to what he can or can't do. Lots of options -

Rest

Rehab

Aids (braces, straps, releases, etc..)

Switch hands - it is not that hard to switch from RH to LH and vice versa

Good luck to your friend!

Yeah, my wife used a mechanical release a few years ago when she was having issues, the bow still shot the same arrows with good flight, very forgiving release. You need to set up the D-Loop a little different, tie it to wear it's like a lower nocking point below the arrow versus around the arrow like they do on a compound. Joel Turner help me with that cause I wouldn't have figured it out on my own. It puts the force on the string as your middle finger if you shoot split, might want to mount a little lower if your bow is tillered three under.
