I just acquired Staghorn bow it's a XP 60 inch I put a 55 inch string on it but the brace height was only 7 inches. I think I need a 54 inch string. I don't think they built these bows to AMO specs. I would like to hear from someone who is familiar with Staghorns.

Measure the bow along the belly from nock to nock following the curve of the limbs.

Then buy a string with an actual length 4" shorter.

That is the only way to get the correct length string. Not wise to depend on other persons experience as they're not holding your bow.

I think my XP64 takes a 59" string from what I remember. 60" was to long, that deflexed riser plays tricks on you and the humps on the belly make it real hard to get a good measurement. I just had 2-3 close strings to try and when I got one twisted up where I wanted the brace, I ordered 2 new strings for it that long.

Yup, they were not AMO so actually 2” shorter. XP 60 should take a 54/55” string. So how does it shoot at 7”? Can you get a little more by twisting it up? Been a long time since I owned/shot my XP’s so can’t remember the brace height but always liked them on the low side.

I just flung two arrows, they hit high but in line, bow was quite loud and the string burned my arm. Thanks for all the responses I think I know what to do now.

Try raising the brace height until the bow smooths out. Then measure the string and order one that length.

Or, do as Pdiddly indicated and measure the bow.

Burned your arm, that’s what an arm guard is for. Keep twisting it up till the noise quiets down, then do as tsp said.
