How much does bow length mean to you? Do you say "I have to have X length bow" or "whatever feels good, I shoot it".

From: Longcruise

Applying a single bow length across the board doesn't work very well. Different designs accommodate different lengths. Shooters with different draw lengths will be comfortable with varying bow lengths.

I shoot bows that range from 54" to 70". Each one is a good length for it's design and my 28" draw length.

This is something that has crossed my mind on several occasions in Septembers. I like bow lengths (bl) 60-64". Most of my bowhunting excursions are out in search of elusive Elk, dropping into drainages and climbing out of them, here in the Montana Rockies. I often find myself catching my breath with pack on my back and my lower limb tip planted on top of the toe of my boot. The top limb tip is wrapped by my hands and adding support under my chin (bl 60") or my forehead (bl 64") as I pant and try to catch my breath before pushing on. At a height of 5'11" I have often thought this just wouldn't work for me with a shorter bow < 60" or longer bow > 64".

For target, the std recipe is pretty darn close. For hunting, there's always a compromise.

I know what I like, can't say for anyone else with out a lot more info.

I like longer than normal bows for my 28" draw. For example; most like 58-60" glass recurves, I prefer 62-64". Most like 60-64" "long bows", I prefer 64-72".

Agree with Longcruise. I shoot 56-60-inch recurves, prefer the longer length; 62-64- inch mild rd and hybrid longbows, prefer the 64 inch; and 66-68-inch ASLs. 28-inch draw.

Some of the new Curve profiles (Border, Uukha) don't work if your bow is too long. Also, the new designs matched with new materials (carbon) make a shorter bow very shootable with a long draw.

From: Burly

I shoot bows 60 inch and longer better. I have a 28 " draw.

From: slade

I do not like shooting anything less than 68", although some 66" bows shoot pretty nice.

@Viper: What’s the Standard Formula??

I like 62”, myself. I have a Bamboo Viper - 64” - that’s as tall as I am. Great to shoot with in warm weather, but the string seems to get tangled up with my jacket when I’m wearing more layers. YMMV

50" to 70"...all the same to me...depends on design.

From: Bassman Professional Bowhunters Society - Qualified Member

I shoot bows from 54 to 62 inches. For hunting 58 recurve or 60 inch wood bow.For target 62 inch recurve 62 inch selfbow at 26 inch draw 45 lbs.Just have to shoot them ,and find out what is most comfy for you.

From: reb

I have a 27" draw and I shoot any where from 48" to 68" .

From: Chain

My Echo is 70". I have a 31" draw. It is the best length I've shot.

From: Bill Rickvalsky

I shoot longbows and shorter hybrid longbows only. In my opinion my longer 66" longbows are much more forgiving of my mistakes. My shorter hybrids are 56" long and require much more precise shooting on my part to get good results. The shorter bows I use mainly for blinds and tree stands.

But I enjoy shooting all four of them for pure backyard fun.

60 and 62" for hunting and 3-D. 68" for indoor and field archery.

From: wingman

58 to 62" covers it for me for hunting with my recurves. Though occasionally I use 64".

From: Sirius Black
Date: 16-Jul-18

I agree with Longcruise also. I am shooting a 58 inch longbow (Dwyer Endeavor) and I enjoy it more than any other longbow I've had, some out to 68 inches. A lot depends on the design

From: Rough Run

I shoot everything from 56" to 64". My favorite for several reasons is a 56". But, like others, I find it less forgiving of poor concentration or sloppy form on my part. I like shooting it because when I'm shooting well, I know it. Most of my bows, though, are 60". That seems to be a pretty good length for me and my 28" draw.

From: Tradarcher4fun
Date: 16-Jul-18

I have a 27.5" draw. I've been shooting 64" - 68" longbows. Very smooth shooting. I took a chance on a beautiful 56" longbow. It shoots as smooth, if not smoother, than my 68" longbows. Couldn't believe it! Right now the 56" bow is the only bow I'm taking off the rack. I use for 3D and target shooting.

From: picapica

I have a 29" to 29.5" draw length. My favorite bow lengths range from 64" on up to my 72" Tamerlane.

X2 what Longcruise said.

First step for determining the length for me is to determine what bow I want and for what purpose. Then I look at what lengths it is available in and go from there.

Going up a tree several days a year, scaring rabbits on cold days, or hiding next to brush piles from turkeys, get a short one.

Shooting a serious tournament, then I would get a serious and expensive tournament bow, which would be a whole lot longer limbed bow than my hunting bow.

For just killing paper plates or having fun at a 3-D, then any bow length will do. My only reqiurement for those bows is they have to be really good looking. To me, bows are like dogs. Always get one you can sit on the porch with. Length don't matter.

From: TGbow
Date: 16-Jul-18

I like different lengths. I have a 52 inch recurve, 58, 60, and 62. You can hunt with whatever length you put your mind to shoot. I have to say though, my 62 inch recurve kinda spoils me with my 28 inch draw..definitely more pleasant to shoot as far as string angle.

From: Daven
Date: 16-Jul-18

I will shoot any bow. Not too picky. If it feels good in the hand and through draw and the shot, it should shoot good and will be fun all the way around.

From: fdp
Date: 16-Jul-18

It depends on how accurate I want to be and how consistently.

Never really fond a longer bow to be difficult to hunt with. But I determine where I put my stands, and allow for the bow.

@GF -

This is from LAS:

DRAW LENGTH……………..BOW LENGTH

14-16 inches……………….48 inches

17-20 inches……………….54 inches

20-22 inches……………….58 inches

22-24 inches……………….62 inches

24-26 inches……………….64-66 inches

26-28 inches……………….66-68 inches

28-30 inches……………….68-70 inches

31 inches and longer…………70-72 inches

Most other sources are pretty close - again this is for target bows.
