We had our USA Archery field nationals a few weeks ago. This was also the USA team trials for field worlds held in Cortia Italy this year. Here are some of the highlights. Hope you all enjoy.

First pic left to right is myself, Rich Barker (lancaster classic winner), John Dillinger, and Rick Stonebreaker

I did a bunch of videos, but unfortunately can't post them. They are on my Instagram if ya ever are interested. If you never gave field archery a shot, give it a whirl. Tried it five years ago, and I'm hooked.

I've haven't done competition since 1973. In the past, I'd always done field archery. I have to admit that I prefer it to 3D. However if, you're a hunter, which I'm not, I can see the benefits to it for getting ready for hunting season. Around our "part of the woods," all you can find anymore is 3D. So I'd have to say that a bad day shooting 3D is still better than a good day at work! LOL.

Thank you for the pics. and good luck.

I’ve always thought no matter what type of shooting you do, 3D, field, indoor, is good and fun.

Field archery is awesome. Too bad there are not more shoots like we used to have.

Would love to shoot field again but as far as I know there is no range in Alabama that shoots it. ASA and ASTB do 3D and that's about it. Love to hear about it though thanks for sharing John.

John - is that colored sun-block on your nose, or did you just whack yourself in the snood???

LOL - probably just a weird optical effect...

I feel really fortunate that we have a full NFAA set-up at my local club... I just don’t have the foggiest notion as to how you know which line to shoot from or how you score these things...

Thanks John. Great pics. Congratulations to all the shooters. Field rounds are a great challenge. Those that don’t get to play are really missing out.

Great pics John.

Still cool for me to see Kim make her 2nd world championship team.

For those who don't know Kim Hartman, she was a 4-H and then a JOAD mom who brought her sons to archery practice and had never even shot a bow before (except maybe summer camp 40 years ago?).

After her boys joined my JOAD club, I started working on her and her husband to pick up a bow and shoot. Finally Kim decided it was too boring to just sit there and watch everyone else shoot, so she let me teach her. Right away, she was a natural. She has some of the best natural back tension and cleanest release I've ever seen. I basically spent two years teaching her how to stand, maintain a good bowarm and then how to aim and the rest is all her.

I told my JOAD parents for years that I was "just" a JOAD parent like them once upon a time, and there is no reason they couldn't pick up a bow and compete too. I'm glad Kim made that choice and I know she is too.

Ok, so what is up with some of their noses? Is that tape and why?

John, in Barebow can you mark your tab and/or use written references?

Nose taping: Anchor in tight on the face and especially with string walking to protect nose from getting raw from bowstring hitting it.

From: GF
Date: 25-Jun-18

Yep. I need to either grow back the beard or start taping the side of my face.... I keep getting barked up right at the edge of the hairline on my mustache...

Amazing thing to me is that you can see where these folks are anchored and you can watch how well they shoot and there are still people who think it’s not important (or even useful!) to anchor right under your eyeball.... just as there are those who shoot three under and swear not only that they don’t AIM down their arrow, but that they never even SEE it because they shoot “Instinctive”....

ROFLMAO

John, in Barebow can you mark your tab and/or use written references?

I know you were asking a different John, but...

There is a specific rule that speaks to this, but I believe some folks are "testing" that language these days. For the longest time, it was no written memorandum and we all interpreted that to mean marks on tabs too. But marks on tabs have been allowed recently.

https://worldarchery.org/Rules

"22.3.8.1. A separator between the fingers to prevent pinching the arrow may be used. An anchor plate or similar device attached to the finger protection (tab) for the purpose of anchoring is permitted. The stitching shall be uniform in size and colour. Marks or lines may be added directly to the tab or on a tape placed on the face of the tab. These marks shall be uniform in size, shape and colour. Additional memoranda is not permitted. On the bow hand an ordinary glove, mitten or similar item may be worn but shall not be attached to the grip of the bow."

From: limbwalker
Date: 25-Jun-18

I'm not sure why they still require "uniform" stitching when they allow marks on the tab (or tape placed on the tab) that can be of different spacing. Note - it only says uniform size, shape and colour. Not spacing. ;)

Thanks John. BTW I notice both high and low anchors. Do most shooters change anchors during the round for long and short targets?

From: limbwalker
Date: 26-Jun-18

reddogge, none of my archers do. I am not a big fan of changing anchors, and Mark Schlaudraff, a long time student of mine who won silver and gold at the last world field championships, could tell you why. ;)

(hint: it has to do with why he doesn't have two golds ;) )

From: reddogge
Date: 26-Jun-18

John, which of the two anchors would you recommend?

From: Demmer
Date: 27-Jun-18

Sorry about that. Been super busy to respond back to some questions. Luckily, Magera is here to help out. Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll try to post a bunch of stuff during the field world's.

Reddogge, I'ld recommend getting an anchor/ arrow combo to get either a point on 45 meters or 50 meters for this game. That way you can always aim on the dot for all distances. I have a very good hard anchor with a point on 50m. Works really well for me and keeps it simple.

very interesting ... thanks John

Interesting to see the very subtle variations in form and technique of some of the top archers
