Hello, my name is Nils Brohage (42) and I’m a disabled veteran living in Colorado Springs with TBI and advancing Multiple Sclerosis.

I was ordered by my PCP, my neurologists and my mental health providers in Denver (VA-MS clinic) to get out of the house, meet some new people and start recreational therapy now that I’m out of the hospital - archery is what I picked but, do you guys have anyone here in the Springs to help me get started?

I am interested in starting doing recurve bowhunting, recurve competitions and recurve 3D competitions BUT since I am completely new to this archery game, new to the area, no longer allowed to drive etc I know I need equipment, gear, classes and/or instruction, mentoring etc and I was told that you might be able to help? Maybe you’ve had experience and/or contact with organizations in the past that are willing and able to help out...yes, financially as well I’m sad to admit ??

Please, help a brother out and give me a call OR just email me back with the information I need to keep moving forward with this - local buddies, contacts, organizations and/or clubs etc...if you have any gear you don’t use any more, scratched up demo equipment, old stuff you are thinking about selling...whatever it may be, I’m more than willing to do whatever it takes to get me started ASAP so, please, anything you think might help me out would be greatly appreciated ??????

Be blessed, be safe and make good choices!

City of Colorado Springs

The Therapeutic Recreation Program (TRP) provides opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities to acquire skills that enable them to participate in leisure experiences of their choice and enhance their abilities to function within a community setting. The TRP has partnered with U.S. Paralympics to offer adaptive sports programming for community members and veterans who have a physical disability.

Nils,

First, Thank You for your service.

Deno has given you some great options to get started. You might also check the USA Archery website for some options. They are located in Colorado Springs and they might have some options for you to consider. Especially for target archery.

Welcome to the sport of archery. This is a great community with tons of knowledge.

Good Luck with your journey.

There is a fantastic 3D range at the Air Farce acadamy. Atleast, 15 years ago there was.

I hope all goes well.

You guys kick serious ass - this is exactly what HH6 and I was hoping for, community!!!

I have been in touch TRP and USA Archery, unfortunately that was a bust for whatever reason - I think we just need to stay on them, just like everything else even remotely involved with the VA ??

The archery competition/meet on post was this weekend, Becky still working 2 jobs and the twins dragging ass - we showed up 15:17 just to be told it was over and everyone went home around 14:00...it was still a NICE setup though, looking forward to countless hours learning and honing our skills over there for sure.

Rocky Mountain Speciality Gear? T06 in route, most definitely check them out!

From Becky, my twin boys and I to everyone who has been supportive and caring...everyone who’s reached out to us and shared their knowledge and offered assistance etc;

Sincerely, from our hearts - thank you!

I didn’t do what I did for 12 years to get rich or to gain ANYTHING from it, we as a family made that decision so that we wouldn’t have to stand idly by and have someone else go in my stead.

“That others may live” is the only reward we ever hoped for, this forum and it’s members has shown us that there’s still ACTUAL communities out there, albeit an electronic one.

The fact that this tiny little online community got together and helped us in ways the government could not, you guys are AWESOME and should all be proud of yourselves!

If you ever need our help or just wanted to come visit, make this a physical community and not “just” an electronic one or - here’s our address;

5812 Walsh Point #107 Colorado Springs, CO 80919

We have a spare bedroom for you, just know we have two BIG dogs and twin 3- year olds...the bed is yours but you may have to share it ??????

Love you guys, T06 out.

There is a trad archery shop in lakewood denver on kipling street, rocky mountain specialty gear, top notch trad shop. Those guys will be able to help you get set up and even give lessons. If you start out with some proper instruction from those guys you will be way ahead of the curve.

Yeah we’re happy with whatever you guys want to contribute, again - beggars can’t be choosers!

My wife and I both shoot right handed, that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge. I’m very comfortable with a #30-45 bow, Becky hasn’t shot anything past #25 I believe ??

And short to medium risers, limbs etc...I think the bows we shot at the shop was all 58-60” I believe but I’ve been known to be wrong before!

Hey Bud,

I just retired out of Carson. Ive been shooting trad for a Looooong time. Go to Bill Pelegrinos Archery Hut on Monday nights for a Trad League. Gotta go around back, cause they lock the front door. Trad shoot starts at 7pm. Anyone there will get you squared away. They know me very well. Tell them Casey sent you. Unfortunately I moved to Florida since retiring. I miss those guys dearly. Ask for Ben , or James. They are the head guys, but if they arent there (unlikely), anyone will take care of you. I promise. Many of them are old vets. They will square you away with bows/equipment. I very proud to call those guys friends. Im not on here often, but send me a message if you like to chat. Youll be in good hands.

@monkeyball

My draw length was 27” I believe, I didn’t think it mattered with traditional bows? I was told that they’re all measured at 28” or something like that...??
