Back in 2016 I started a Trophy Squirrel Contest. Mountain Man (Scott Jerard) won a fire-starter, and squirrel call for his harvest. 2018 I'd like to "Honor" the sporting and trophy quality of Tree Squirrels. Since there are 8 or 9 huntable species across the US. Post a photo of your traditional archery, legally harvested, tree squirrel from 09/01/2018 to 12/31/2018. All sucessful hunters names will be entered into a hat. Two names will be drawn and win a homemade: Squirrel Tote, Squirrel Skinning Aid, and Squirrel Cutter call. Hope you all have a Safe, Enjoyable, and Blessed Season!

I'll kick this off. Gear used: 62" Toelke Whip 42#, heritage 75 arrow, magnus stinger, black carbon steel skillet.

This was my very first sit on a new farm for deer and i arrowed this guy 20 minutes in. Had to climb down and get my lighted nock out of him. After dark as i just got back to ground level a coyote ran in for my supper, saw me and took off. No deer, but any hunt involving skirrels is a good hunt in my book.

I'd rather hunt squirrels than deer ANY old day. All that surrounds their allure and demeanor is a perfect fit for me. But with all due respect, I won't put my name in your hat for some of the same reasons I won't enter buck pools. I hope your endeavor entices a few new folks to appreciate their pursuit though. It's so much fun. I'm counting the days.

Hiked back a little, spoted a grey squirrel waaay high. Very first shot from newly acquired ol Browning .22 auto, buckhorn sight. Dead. Got my arrow back, too. Mounted a Bushnell scope on it, never could shoot it accurately afterward. Dumb thing to do but the new owner loves it. And I love the Hoyt Gold Medalist I got in trade. Don't think the squirrel formed any opinions.

Biggest I've seen in my life was a corn fed fox squirrel in Guernsey Co Ohio and I missed it, on the ground, inside of 12 yards, with my selfbow Lioness, who LOVES the taste of squirrel... TWICE! In completely objective hindsight, I think I may have had a touch of 'buck fever'. I knew right away it was a rare specimen. It was SO fat, it moved like a turtle and acted like dragging itself up the hickory tree 2-3' away to avoid arrows was the last thing on earth it wanted to do. I could have taken another shot as it stopped to glare at me, but felt it had already gotten the best of me, so didn't bother reaching for another arrow. Fair is fair.

I remember as a kid squirrels were the ONLY game in town. Kids carried shotguns and 22's in their truck racks at highschool so they could get to the woods as soon as they were dismissed.

they have fed a lot of families over the years.

From: Jeff Durnell Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

I never came close to outgrowing em. I outgrew shotguns in their pursuit, but not 22's, flintlocks, or stickbows.

I can't wait until squirrel season starts. Last year I educated a lot of them. Didn't get my black one last year. :^( I need a black one to compete my goal of all the squirrel species/color phase of PA.

A couple of years back I got a bow from JD Berry. I could hardly wait for squirrel season. I killed a bunch the first week, it was nice weather. Then my wife started cooking them, very careful slow cooking, I thought they were great. On the fourth one of the week, she gagged on it and and declared with no uncertain terms no more squirrels. I had to eat the last four by myself. We really have some of the finest fat fox squirrel hunting any where. I have heard that it is impossible for anyone to eat quail everyday for a month, most people cannot get past a week. Maybe squirrel fits in that same category. We feed them in our yard, we have a family line of fox squirrels that are light gray, one even had a white patch on her rump. Three blocks down they are coal black.

I borrowed my Sister's Delorean,

and got this one at lunch time on Saturday - 09/01/2018

16 yards broadside, and about 10 ft up the tree.

They don't get real big around here. This one is a little bigger than mid size.

Them VPA SGT's knock a hole through them. A big hole.
I dislike squirrels. I dislike them a lot.
But, they are good to eat. 8^)

One of the best ways to honor any game animal is to eat it. I clean mine as quickly as possible. Efficient field dressing and good recipes go a long way to help encourage a bowhunter to shoot and enjoy small game. I would like to see how some experienced squirrel chefs prepare theirs.

From: B arthur
Date: 20-Jun-18

3 or 4 squirrels pressure cooked. Take all the meat off the bone put in a slow cooker. Add 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup, 2 sticks of butter, potatoes, carrots, peas, celery, grean beans, one diced onion, or whatever veggies you want. Salt and pepper to taste. Cook on low while you are hunting all day. Serve over biscuits.

From: Rick Barbee

I really like my squirrel best either pan fried, or grilled whole. Either way I par boil them first for 8 to 10 minutes.

I do rabbits the same way.

Sometimes when grilling them I slather on a little BBQ while they are browning up.

I started a campaign to tan the hide of one of each critter I bow kill.... started a little home tanning hobby.

This was my first victim from last year... and that is a 22 inch long quiver.

I documented the tanning process here:

Smaller game shouldn't inherently equate to smaller levels of respect. One of the best ways to honor any game animal is to not take, show, or enjoy the gory versions of post-mortem photographs or accounts of them. Why do I need to see your arrow sticking out of a squirrel? I don't. Why NOT with the deer you killed? Why do you feel so differently about them... when they've each given you all they had to give?

When you show less respect... you earn less. The converse is true as well.

Very sorry to have upset you Jeff.

From: RonG

Jeff, I don't have a photo of any game that I have taken in the last fifty years because I feel the same as you. I am not a trophy hunter, just hunt for the excitement and rewards, and most of all, I just get what I need at the time, I don't stock my freezer full, I usually hunt with two of my friends and we always divide what was taken that day. I guess I am weird.

B Arthur does it the way I do, slow cook, except I usually add dumplings to the pot instead of serving over buscuits, but basically it's the same.

I left them alone this year and they stripped my strawberry guava tree of all it's fruit before any of it ripened, I couldn't figure out why they would eat green fruit, they were eating the seeds, destructive little rascals, next year they aren't getting any. I had ten to twelve squirrels in that tree at one time every day, it took them two weeks to get everyone of the fruit off.

From: RonG
Date: 05-Oct-18

I think Jeff and I were just mentioning the close up of the wound and arrows sticking out of the animal, there were no accusations, just our opinions trying to clean up the photos that are shown here.

Nothing was mentioned about not showing the pictures of your prize.

I was just mentioning the way that I have always done it with respect for the game and not needing any photos for reference, heck I don't even have any photos of my old cars and motorcycles that I restored, don't need them, I live for the moment and don't have much of that left, we were just expressing our ideas on how to display the animal for presentation.

The photo's of the game is great to show the different types Iowacedarshooter has the best photo of squirrels...Ha!Ha!

Nice photo squirrelhunter, those are pretty enough to have as pets. Now that is the way to show your prize.

The gist of the thread was to post photos of squirrels taken w trad bows. Broadheads make big holes in squirrels so it stands to reason that there will be some blood involved. if you are sensitive, then i would have thought youd read the op and refrain from scrolling down. I respect the animals i hunt by hunting them w a longbow and making ethical quick kills. The animal, once departed feels nothing regarding how his photo came out. This ain't the Disney channel. And since we're into expressing opinions
