I am contemplating a bowhunt in the state of Kansas next year. I know that I will begin by applying for a nonresident tag and have looked over the public ground including the "Walk in hunting ground" program. Does anyone have any experience hunting Kansas and would you advise hunt Units. Which have decent densities of whitetails and access to public land. Thanks

Hopefully, the folks on here from Kansas will join in. I have hunted Kansas as a non- resident several years. Hunted mostly Southeastern part of state. I found most of the areas I would have liked to hunt are leased. Rarely found a walk-in area that had good cover along with low hunting pressure. But, I assume in the more rural (remote) parts of the state there are some good walk in areas. Tags are getting $$$ steep. Timing of archery season vs gun season is a plus. Good luck.

Lots of the good hunting has been leased up, but there is still a lot of Good WIHA in the state. Central to Western part has great WIHA without lots of pressure. Although each year there is more and more. I have access to some private ground but still hunt some WIHA in the area because it is good stuff!

I have hunted on public land in kansas 3 times. I can't wait to go back. Little preasure and some great bucks. Look for public land surrounding a lake. I hunted in eastern Kansas rach time.

Kansas is going the direction Illinois went unfortunately.Lessons they should have learned from Pike County.

I agree. Kansas is changing. Lots of ground being bought up for hunting. Also, Kansas wants to make it a easy as possible to kill a deer which also brings people in. Heck if you want to, you can feed a deer all year long and then shoot him as he stands at the feeder. It's still good "hunting" here in Kansas. But many here would rather just go deer shooting. Can't bait them here on public hunting yet.

Everyone complains about how hard it is for a NR to draw in Iowa- ducks fact NR landowners are not guaranteed a buck tag.Its the only thing keeping it like it is- already some getting leased up by "outfitters" and EHD problems stress the herd.I hope they never change it(and I'm NR now)

Kansas gives out to many non resident tags at least in our area. If hunters want the opportunity to hunt trophy class deer you aren’t going to have them if all of the two and three year old deer get taken out. Which has caused a problem with our buck to doe ratio. For the most part people coming from out of state to hunt are not shooting does, so more bucks get taken then does. On top of that you can use crossbows in archery season and that has boosted Non-Resident and resident success rates. The state appears to be more concerned with making money from tag sales then having quality and healthy animals. Also baiting on public lands was legal until a few years ago. I don’t want people to not have the chance to hunt Kansas I would just like to see the state change some things.
