Well... I got it done. My transition to trad is far from complete but I took a giant step this week. I was able to get it done on a nice Alberta boar. I didn't make a great shot... but it was good enough.

My 50# Centaur and VPA's were bad medicine. We had a great hunt - lots of bears... LOTS of bears. My brother in law saw a lynx and I saw a wolf.

Congratulations on a beautiful boar. Hope you saved the swizzle stick as a reminder of your adventure. Like Riverwolf said some more pics and info would be great. What outfitter? Some get you real close to the action. Great job on your first trad kill.

Since there were questions..

The outfitter we used was North Alberta Outfitters. A guy named Troy Foster runs it. There's a couple of knockoff outfitters with similar names. We were North of Slave Lake - it's wild as shit up there. We were about 30 minutes from a small town that you could go get a room for cheap and shower/wash if you wanted. Some of us did that every two days... some of the guys just stayed in camp the whole time. There's spotty internet service so... most mornings we'd drive up the road a few miles to get cell service and do some work stuff... camp is a small tent city. Food was great. We ate at 0800, 1400 and 2300.

It would be a great place for a "beginner bear hunt" or "father son" type thing. The shots are close (20 yds or less if you want) and the bears are not hunted hard... so they aren't all that wary. The main thing is "don't shoot the first bear you see." That of course didn't apply to my best friend who did indeed kill the very first bear he saw. It turned out to be the biggest bear they'd ever killed... estimated just shy of 8' and 450 pounds... spring bear. There's a ton of phase bears. In fact the first three bears I saw were chocolate bears. I asked my guide - "do you guys have black bears up here?" : )

There were gun hunters in camp... but if you're a hunter at all you wouldn't want to hunt with anything but your bow. I ended up inviting 5 of my close buddies for the trip... we all got a bear... two of my buddies got 2. It's a two tag area... having two tags takes the pressure off.
