How do I remove finish from cedar arrows? Great woodies. Bad finish I’d like to take off and refinish with true oil. The finish is polycrytic over white enamel. Want to take it all off

I buy wood arrows at yard sales when in good condition. I strip them using Minwax Refinisher, 0000 steel wool and lots of paper towel.I have used this process for several years and it works very well. I can strip 1/2 dozen arrows in about 20 minutes.

The time you let it sit and soak will vary Ive even stripped military rifle stocks of all the cosmoleen with it

Any brand of paint and varnish remover you can get at a hardware store will do it. I use Bic Strip quite a bit.

Citrus Strip in the orange bottle is excellent.

If you want to use a solvent, acetone is the least toxic of the nasty ones. It's nail polish remover. MEK, toluene, xylene and the like will dissolve your brain. Caustic strippers like sodium hydroxide(oven cleaner), or methylene chloride(XXX) will burn your lungs or kill you. Stay away from aerosols, you pay a lot for propellents and atomize some nasty liquids that you don't want floating in the air. Go with one of the gentle strippers, 3m Safest Stripper or the Citrus based ones. I have refinished a lot of furniture and can tell you, there is no magic, non toxic product out there for this. If this was my project, I would scrape and sand.

I make a tray from aluminum foil put 6 shafts at a time in and soak in acetone, in 5 minutes you can wipe the finish right off Ive done many shafts, if you get a stubborn spot you can use steel wool soaked in acetone otherwise I use a paper towel . Wear latex gloves !

Acetone works great but don't get careless with it, it is highly flammable. Also it is not harmless to your body, it is an organic solvent and is readily absorbed through your skin and is metabolized through your liver. Acetone will dissolve and is a thinner for marine fiberglass, if that tells you anything. You don't want a large quantity being dealt with by your liver so use common sense and live long.

Don’t use EZY-Off to remove the stubborn paint from the new Easton Legacy shafts. It removes the wood grain look as well as the paint. Grrrrrr!

The acetone burned through the foil but did remove most all the paint quickly!

Thanks Tim.

None or good for you. Please do outdoors and don't monitor too close. >>>----> Ken
