I just acquired a beauty of a John McCullough 59er recurve from a fellow Leatherwaller and wanted to find out if anyone here knows definitively whether these bows were intended to handle fastflight and similar low stretch strings or if they are intended for dacron only. The last 2 digits of the serial are "08" so I'm guessing that to be the year. I know there are those who will have opinions on shooting FF in just about any bow with padded loops, but my question is specifically if this bow was actually designed for it. Thanks for your input.

I have a 56er and it came with a ff string. I was told by a reliable source John used 450+ for his bowstrings.

I think he used 6-8 strand also.

Yup, made in 08. I run 8 strand SBD strings on the three I have. Great shooting bows and very hard to come by. Don't think John made many of them.

Yes to FF. I have John's first 59er introduced at Denton Hill. I shot the bow on the 1st day of the shoot and bought it but agreed to leave it at his booth so others can see and shoot it that week. This is my favorite bow, so natural to shoot. Also have one of his Griffins. John made quality bows.

I know that John ran 450+ on the Griffin. As for the 59er not exactly sure. When I got my Griffin, I had a conversation with John about strings for my Grayling Spirit. John bowyered the Grayling Spirit for Ron LaClair which was a 59 Kodiak reduex that Ron was selling based on a Bear 59 Kodiak that Ron owned. John mentioned Dyna 97 worked well on the GS. Being that the Grayling Spirit is the twin of the 59er, Dyan97 works well.

I'm using 12 strands of Dyna97 and padding the loops with 6 strands of B50 on a three lay flemish string. The bow really likes it.
