Moving forward for this coming Elk season I am thinking aboout using a 300grain tough head SB or the 300 grain VPA. from those that have used these heads on Elk what was performance like. I am dropping weight to 55Lbs. I am looking for the optimum set up

Cannot comment on TH but my wife took her 175 grain VPA's to Africa last year and with her 53# 26" draw bow (Mathews) shot through every thing she came to full-draw on. Kudu died in 30 yds... warthog made it 50... I shot the same head with similar results. I'm sure TH's are great... but that experience prompted me to give my other broadheads to friends. I only shoot VPA's now.

Yes sir VPA are really tough !!!!

Are you guys shooting 3-blade or 2-blade VPA's and vented or non-vented?

For two blade single bevel don't forget to look at the 190 glue- on Cutthroats with a 100gr. steel adapter. Good price at RMSgear.

I'm trying them this year for elk season, good price too.

I'm going 160 with adapter to finish at 235, close enough to my 225 field points. They do sharpen up easy.

Rick Barbee killed somewhere close to a dozen hogs with the same VPA head a while back. Personally, I prefer a two blade double bevel for elk. Simmons 175 gr. Tiger Shark.

I do not like the way tuff-heads are designed. To wide and short and do not come to more of a point. Not streamlined, I would feel poor penetration due to the steep angle!!

LOL. Joking, right?

By the time I am done I will have a collection going. Heck in my storage i have greenies, zwickies, bodkin, those giant wheistals by Roger Rothar, and many others. I have Savoras, orginal junky wasps thinkgs I do not recognize.

I have the cutthroats, tuffheads, and BPA 2 blades and 3 blades. Honestly, I doubt that it would matter which one you chose. They are all great heads. I save my tuffheads in case I get to chase buffalo, but use all of the others for everything else, and throw some Simmons heads into the mix. Of all of the animals that I have shot, I can only think of one where the Broadhead that I shot may have made a difference, and that was a nice boar that I lost using a short 3 blade after hitting it in the shield while using a bow that was around 57# at my draw. No way to prove it made an difference, but I still think it would have gone differently with a good 2 blade. Thick shielded boars are just a different animal.

Always a trade off with everything. I usually prefer the broadhead most likely to put the most blood on the ground so I have a better opportunity of finding the animal, especially with large Hogs. Simmons style heads and the wider VPA heads have done a good job for me in that regard, and I usually don't have much trouble with penetrate with the poundage I shoot and my longer drawlength. It is all fun, anyway, and I like mixing things up a little. They can't all bleed like this.

[[[ JMartin said: "Rick Barbee killed somewhere close to a dozen hogs with the same VPA head a while back." ]]]

That was a 175gr VPA 3 Blade on a GT Trad 7595 shaft.

It was 19 pigs before any damage to the broadhead or arrow. Pig #19 bent the ferrule, and snapped the shaft. He was a big feller, and it was a pretty long shot with no complete pass through.

He ran between two large, and set close together oak trees, and the arrow caught the tress on both ends. He was full bore running, so the damage was no surprise, he was DRT almost immediately after clearing the two trees.

Straightened it up, sharpened it up, put it on a new arrow, and killed two more before retiring it.

It's still perfectly good to use, but 21 is a good number, and I figure it has earned the retirement. 8^)

Nice job Rick. Only time I got in trouble was using the short, wide, vented 150 grain head on a big one. Might have been OK using one of my stouter bows, but was in a hurry to get after him.

My wife horsegal simply says the VPA's are just sexy , cant argu with that. I have a bunch of 200 'vpa's . never shot anything with them yet yes they are sexy. Planning my annual elk hunt and will be using the VPA's with Easton FMJ's. A big departure from my wood arrows coming out of a 64Lbs. I am getting very anal about my selection as culd be my last big elk hunt with a big bull tags. I want to make it count and taking all of sept off.

Good luck. Hope you get to put your setup to work.

Tuffhead all the way. Can not go wrong with a 3:1 single bevel designed like the Tuffhead.

Like pdk 25 I mostly hunt wild boars and they are thougher than the elk, I hunt elk as well, both the Tuff Head and the VPA, will do an excellent work, along with others. We are blessed to have so many excellent broadheads to choose from. Just learn how to sharp and resharpen them.
