Some nice bows on this thread,,,,,.and it appears we have a couple of hoarders. ;))

At bottom is an Elburg Condor, 64" 64# @ 28". Riser is Shedua, limbs are a combo of Red Elm and Walnut. Made in the late '80s or early '90s. Harry made his bows Fast Flight compatible way back then... Hard to find these bows, won't be parting with this one!

At top is my latest bow from James of JD Berry. A Valor, made just last month and its a gem! Reverse handle...68" 57# @ 28". Riser is stacked bamboo with a cap James says is a very light colored Purple Heart. Limbs are boo with Tiger Maple veneers. This bow is pure pleasure to shoot, immediately became my favorite!

A lot of those have came and gone. I don’t have a kramer currently on my rack. At one point I had around 15 at once but they were all too heavy. I’d like to find a kramer around 60#. Not too many Longbows ever made that can perform like a kramer. I liked lees Bows a little better than teds but both of them were master bowyers. I have about 17 or so Bows on my rack right now. From: Mountain Man

Hey Nate hope your heal’n up well

Ok the two with clear glass belly’s,,,what riser woods are those I like the way you blended them in

From: Sunset Hill
Date: 24-Nov-18

I'm not taking orders yet....healing is going well though

the clear glass ones are myrtle handles, those happened to be sistered blocks so the grain looks similar in the sweeps. I prefer the look of radiused fades if they're visible. The first photo bow was named "Bloodtrail" for the grain pattern. It shot a nice bull elk the first year out.

From: Mountain Man
Date: 24-Nov-18

I agree on the radius fades

One of Justins Pete George’s is amazing but his fades square off, where I think the radius brands in smoother

Glad to your healing up well

From: Sunset Hill
Date: 24-Nov-18

I prefer to make them look like a Schulz "Natural". It can't be accomplished using normal bowmaking procedures, that's why everyone else does squared off risers under clear glass.

From: longbow1
Date: 24-Nov-18

My Sage has that type of fade out on the riser section. Rounded like a big toe! I will say I have never shot as smooth of drawing bow as that Sage. Good cast too. Quiet and gentle in the hand but more importantly shoots where I'm looking. keepem sharp

From: Hatrick Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 19-Nov-21

Hey Andy, I actually have a one piece American as well. I just shoot this one a little better. Both have maple lams.

Justin, with all your ASL's I can't believe you don't have a NM TD. I show this one to people and say, 'by the way, it's also a TD". They just look at me funny. Then I take it down and they're amazed at the quality and fit of the connection. No one does it better than Steve.

From: newell38 Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 20-Nov-21

I’ve had both maple and bamboo and honestly I can’t much tell the difference. The maple has a slight edge in the chronograph from my unscientific testing. We’re talking 1-2fps so nothing to write home about. If it’s built by steve it’s going to pull smooth and shoot fast. The glass is the real hero in the whole equation.

From: newell38 Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 20-Nov-21

That takedown had a bamboo limb core.

From: A Tag
Date: 20-Nov-21

Justin I almost had the bow your looking for just not a takedown. You would have been jacked it has the carbon back like your new bow. I would like one of Steve’s takedowns myself. A takedown is always nice on some hunts.

This is one of my favorite threads. I just started down this slippery path. I really enjoy shooting these style of bows. I bought both of these bows at different times off the classifieds on this site. Luckily bot transactions went without a hitch. My first was a Northern Mist classic about two months ago and last week I just got this Kramer Hill Tembo. I love these bows, they shoot amazing.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friend, Hatrick, builds beautiful and wonderful shooting longbows. We have another mutual friend who also builds great longbows but he doesn't post on any forums. I don't shoot a longbow because I'd have to wear a back quiver and that is a bridge too far. Just kidding.

Received the Benoit LB mentioned in the other ASL thread. This is my first time even handling an ASL. First impression was couldn't believe how light it is! I like the fit of the grip but don't really have anything to compare to except a Chaparral Kaibab that has a similar but a bit shallower locator with my other bows being Bear Black Bears -the recurve and the frankenbow version. The Chaparral is the same 64" length but has noticibly more mass. The Benoit is 45# at 28 so the combination of LH and short length probably made it hang around at LifeCycle as long as it did. I have a very short draw so the length won't be an issue. Only shot it short distance in the garage but think I'm going to like it a lot.

Joe, I think you’ll be happy! This one shoots really nice and it’s one of the quietest bows I never heard! It has great performance and is going to made at a reasonable cost and in a timely manner. The only changes we really needed were minor and mostly cosmetic (true hill style look). I’m pretty excited for the new one.

No nock overlays or any riser overlays either. All yew lams with Bolivian rosewood riser.

I'm guessing this is that prototype you have pictured above. Quite the difference in the riser.

From: newell38 Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 14-Dec-22

Riser will be shorter, radius tighter, limbs a touch narrower. The bow pictured above is the prototype and the bows above that are from years ago when he had his website. There will be no belly lamb running up the riser with the new ones.

From: ottertails
Date: 14-Dec-22

Yeah, we talked so much I forget all the details... discussing my grandsons bows then the Asl. He did say they were similar to those in the photo but with the improvements. Looking forward to it, he was hunting down the yew and riser wood last I talked to him...told me possibly January or February delivery. Looking forward to it. I'll post pics when it get here.

Buy them all! You only get one go around so make yourself happy! Plus, the few guys that are building quality hill style bows right now aren’t going to be doing it forever. Get them now while you still can because there aren’t guys lining up to fill these bowyers shoes after they hang up the rasp for the last time.

From: ottertails

I already see another I want! Dang... Justin, you need to loan me a few hundred since you caused all this. ;)

From: BenMaher

Justin , agreed . The amount of guys making good Hill style bows are few and far between and they won’t be making them forever.

So get ordering , keep the straight bow alive. Support the bowyers making them .

I've had the HH Bug for near 20 years but stayed away. I've shot recurve all my life but mostly a R/D LB 64" 52# since 2004. Not long after that transition I got the bug for a ASL. But I'm gonna take the leap before long! I'm leaning definitely towards a HH Cheetah or maybe a Redman? I've had lots of shooting problems in past 13-14 years but I've adjusted my anchor and techniques, shortened my DL to about 28.5", and I'm getting good consistency finally. My left shoulder does bother me some and soon to be 64, I'm probably going to get this Bow 42#@28" and I'm thinking 68"? I'm fully happy with the 64" in my R/D and have considered this new bow in 66" but think I might be better off with 68"?? I'm still deer hunting but I'll always stump shoot, make my own wooden arrows, yes target shoot a lot in the yard and squirrel hunt! I've always kinda dreaded the string slap of a lower BH Bow, it just never been an issue with bows I have with 7.5"-8" BH, but guess I can get used to it. I'm not worried in the least of the the straight grip, the LB I shoot now has only a slight dish, and I prefer these grips although I've never had a Straight HH grip I'm confident that's what I want and can make the adjustments! All my wood is 60-65# and 65-70#, 29" 530gr- 575gr. With the bow I'm considering using POC 29", 125gr WW & Zwuckeys any best suggestions where to start with new wood spine, 50-55 or 55-60#??? I'm shooting 3under now. Any experienced comments on my considerations I'm thinking so far are welcome!???

how do you like the striing follow comparied to your classic ??

From: newell38 Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Very energetic for a string follow. Pleasantly surprised by its performance but then again, all Steve’s bows perform. This Shelton and my old two tracks echoes have been my top performing string follows over the years and I’ve had quite a few of them.

Hey that one worked so here's another....

The Throwback was dead quiet without the string silencers.... actually all my ASLs are. Maybe just a bit of string vibration... so I have all kinds of fur and wool and I know it's against the purist rules to add silencers but it totally eliminates that lil bit of vibration and makes them even "deader" quiet...;))

From: Wayne Hess

Justin , who makes your lighting longbow

From: newell38 Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 30-Apr-23

Gordy Morey of lightning longbows. He has an ad in the latest traditional bowhunter magazine and he’s on Facebook. He’s been building since the 90s (mostly d/r) but through some convincing he has introduced his version of a hill style. It’s one of my favorites so far!

From: Bearcurve59
Date: 30-Apr-23

Well I've admired this thread all along but couldn't participate. Got my first LB a r/d in 2004. Loved it still do, and around 2008- 09 I made my mind up, I ain't gonna be satisfied until I at least try an asl, I'm gonna get one! But circumstances hit me in every bad way and I just quit traditional bows and hunting all together! But I've worked em out, retired, shooting now probably better than ever? So it's time, got a new HH Cheetah coming aprox mid July, 68" 43#@28 and I'm anxious to get to the opportunity to show it on here! Curious as to suggestions on best brace height for me with this Bow? I draw a true 28.5". Any suggestions on a happy expected BH for me?

ottertails-

good guy and always treated me above and beyond expectations

I first met him at the Baltimore shoot and was shooting a John Schulz longbow and had been for years -I had bought a chicken off the coals there and was sitting on the ground at his booth hand picking the chicken for his little dog for a number of years following I always stopped at his boot and would look at his bows - never ordered one bacause was very happy with my John Schulz -and one year he asked - "are you ever gonna order one of my bows" told him I was pondering it

then one day out in the woods sitting on a stump I called him and ordered a Classic with yew veneers and once I gave him my specs I said I want one just like it at a lower poundage for my hunting buddy

picked them both up at Baltimore about 3 months later we had twin bows

Andy Man, you may recall me asking you about those twins a few years ago. Beauties for sure. That one may be next.

Hess, The bow in my picture is a Martin Mountaineer ML-14 that I owned in the 1990s. It had a zebrawood riser, american red elm limbs, clear fiberglass, and was 80#@28". I sold it and a bunch of other bows around 1999/2000 when I decided to go Bear bows only. I also owned two Susquehanna Longbows, one Mahaska Longbow, two Osage Orange self-bows made by a guy from Clinton, Pa. And one Custom Reverse Handled Longbow made by a guy from Clymer, Pa (pictured).

Excellent mgm, beautiful bow! You ordered the weight exactly what I contemplated for a long time! Both my other bows are 52-53# and when I shot much I was having shoulder and sometimes elbow pain, plus I had a broke neck in 96, and when it flares up during wet weather I'm about down. So for the long term I went with 43#. If i didn't hunt I'd got a 37-38#. But these bows draw si smooth and easy, I'm good for al9ng time i believe! Enjoy the bow, let us know how it's doing, and show that green glass I'm attached too being a Bear Curve fan!

So, an ASL is simply a straight-limbed longbow with a block riser, yes? I could theoretically build one from a single piece of wood with a glued on riser block? Always wanted to try one, but the prices they go for even used are beyond my budget.

From: jsweka Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 01-Jan-24

To answer you questions in the most simple sense: Yes that is what an ASL is. And, yes you could build you one.

Making one that is pleasing to the eye and pleasing to shoot is the challenge and you will soon see how custom bowyers justify their cost.

From: deerfly
Date: 01-Jan-24

Coyote, yes theoretically ASL should be simple to build, but details and geometry matter quite a bit. For a first timer you may not get the results you desire and could end up building several before getting a good performing bow equal to an accomplished or mainstream ASL bowyer.

Its more likely you'll end up spending more money building your own, especially if you need to build forms and acquire related clamping or air driven pressure systems, etc as opposed to buying a used ASL or even a new one depending on your ambition and success in the endeavor. However, there are few better feelings for an archer than building your own bow and the better one performs the more fulfilling and addictive the experience. And you'll have the forms etc to build more bows if desired.

Anyway, many thanks to Ron LaClaire for this video, which is probably the best analysis and breakdown, if not an outright dissertation, of the key elements to get you on the right path building your own ASL.

Probably showed my new HH Cheetah last summer when I first got it, but thought I'd update to pics from today & yesterday. It's 68", 43#@28, but I've worked on my shooting ever since I've had it. Went back to split finger, and now shooting @29", using 30" Cedar, 50-55# and getting perfect flight using my choice, Zwickey Eskimos, Deltas, and WW. I again say Thank You Craig, you built me the ultimate custom bow, for my use! Last pic is "Black Mountain Hunter" yesterday in his front yard. On first main ridge running off the peak of Black Mountain, which is aprox 1/2 mile above here, highest point in KY, best known for big black bears, and big black rattlers, and this ridge runs right down to my home. I was born at bottom tip of this ridge also.
