I have been blessed by the leatherwall and this is just a situation born of good information from good people. The man I work for has a place in West Texas and I help maintain it as best as possible. He also lets me do some hunting out there from time to time. This past weekend was opening season for Spring Turkey and I headed out. Saturday brought on A LOT of bust from one set to the next. As a young man I am seeing I may be a little to impatient, but that is a different story. Finally late that afternoon in a drainage near the back end of the property, (I like to hunt there quite often, it's 2 miles in and few people even on neighbor lands go to the backside) I had my chance. The first tom was really impressive and followed a group of hens through an opening just in front of me. He stopped and stared at his girls and I drew only to watch my arrow sail over his back. Yip, I got way to excited and lifted my hand. He jumped several feet forward into the thicket and my arrow stuck in a cedar tree (cedar arrow in cedar tree, go figure), as he leaped another tom, not quite as big steps into my lane only a lot closer, without even much thought I grabbed another arrow found my focus drew and the arrow was gone before I had a chance to really think about what I was doing. A good hit only let the bird flop for a brief moment. The rest of the weekend went about the same as the prior. I would have some closing the gaps, but just could not get that last few yards into comfortable range or situation. Lots to learn and I now have a bigger appreciation for real turkey hunters as I believe that the Turkey has the eyes of a hawk. Thanks for reading along and my bow is my 51@27" Freeman longbow 66" amo and cedar arrows tipped with Zwickey 2 blade. The arrow that found the tree was not damaged nor the arrow that took the tom. This ranch is located near Sonora Texas and the ground is VERY rocky. See pics to follow.

A little of the scenery. By the way he had a 9& 1/2" beard. Not bad for my first longbow Turkey.

The view from the cabin at sunset. We took some time clearing this out so we could see over a short ledge and across the miles of open country to follow.
The short of all this is that I have been incredibly blessed with a job that allows me time, and location, to go and enjoy creation with my family. Again thanks for reading along.

George the weather was rather warm, highs were in the upper 80's, but the wind was aggressive. 20 mph or there abouts' most of the weekend.

It's definitely odd the way Texas splits the season. North zone and South or?? I had to read the book a few times to realize Sutton county started earlier. 76aggie, hope you have a blessed spring season as well.

Batman, you bet, I have them cut off and will soon be in the mail to Todd to get ground down. I killed one last season with my wheelie bow (don't tell anyone) and have been fletching with those feathers, so these will be done too. I think I will do the fan mount myself. i have done a few and they seem to get better with time, my way is slow and as work allows, but comes out okay. As for the rocks, yeah they seem to file the ends down. This Tom had 1 & 1/4" spurs
