Sleeping on the ground ain't as easy as it used to be, so today since it's beautiful out I did a little different set up on the Whelen to accommodate a cot. In preparation for the Kentucky shoot I thought I'd do a test run...it worked out great! I've fashioned a bug/privacy curtain if needed, but if not I can still enjoy basically sleeping under the stars in the minimumalist fashion that I love. Camp just got better.

A cot is like moving into a cabin compared to sleeping on the ground. Looks great.

VTer it's a Witney 6 point wool. Curl up in that and you sleep like a warm baby all night. I've slept sound in 16 degree weather snuggled up in it.

I know how you feel Paul. After eight years of going to the field with the U.S. Army I like my comfort now. Even when I was hunting out west I tried to be as comfortable as I could. Your tent looks good. Reminds me a little of a Baker tent.

Nice setup. Enjoy the luxury.

Ha,Ha! I just noticed I just got the dog in the pic......biggest beer thief in the county. He got me for 1 1/2 beers while tinkering to set the Whelen up.

A Cot sure does make sleeping out easier. It’s also off the ground so getting up an’it a hassle either!

You ain't kidding Gunner and as I get older that means a lot since nature calls more often than it used to. It also leaves storage under the cot giving one a bit more useable space.

Looks great. Colonel Whelan was the man, and his .35 was and still is the gun!

It might not be directlyTrad archery related, but it definitely is indirectly. The good Colonel shared more about outdoor knowledge and skills than anybody I've ever heard of.

PS. I bet that man could've picked up a recurve and hit something with it too.

Iwander, indeed he was quite the outdoorsman, writer, woodsman, Hunter, soldier and a man's man. He was a true minimumalist who truly loved the outdoors.

My favorite story by Whelan:

“Red Letter Hunting Days in British Columbia.”

6 months living off the land in BC around 1912. Amazing story ( real life).

Recommend googling it.

Nice set up and blanket. I heve been using a cot for several decades. Its a low profile model for tent camping. What i like most is I can stash things underneath it and give me more floor space. TLM

There's something about canvas and wool. And sorry about the blank post.

I googled the book that Fletch recommended and this came up. Thanks Fletch, I'm really looking forward to reading it. Steve

All you need now is a small fire in front with a reflector, and perhaps a tripod with a tea kettle. Sandy
