My buddy Scott has been shooting every Tuesday evening with the gang...all compounds and sights except for him, and he is doing pretty well. I'll see if I can get him to share his scores. All the compound shooters are cool folk and very friendly as well. Scott's shooting his Carroll's Lewis Takedown.

At one time in the past the city had an indoor range that my archery club maintained. A few of us got together every Thursday night for years and punched paper.
I shot instinctively with my Bighorn recurve and 2018 aluminum arrows. I shot between 250 and 275 most of the time and am pretty sure I shot a 290 one time when the stars aligned.
I couldn't shot a 5 spot because the extra spots drew my attention away from my intended target. I always shot a 1 spot.
When I switched exclusively to selfbows that I made my shooting was pretty bad. My first bows were pretty crude and didn't shoot all that well. They closed the range permanently before I evolved into a really good bow maker so I don't know how I would do shooting spots in the range now.

Flash, I shoot an awesome bow IMHO. It is a 21" Hoyt Excel Black out with Hoyt Grand Prix F7 Triaxial Carbon Foam limbs pulling 30# at my draw. I twisted up a BCY X 12 strand string, and shoot full length 700 spine Carbon Express Medallion XR shafts with 2" feathers and about 90 grain target points. My last target at league Tue. night was XXX 5,4, Gezz! I can't believe I can't hit 25.

Ok for us old non initiated, googling 300 round comes up a couple of different ways to shoot it. Only time I ever shot it (senior olympics) we shot 40cm blue target with 5 arrows per end @ 20 yards. I noticed Lancaster shoot they were only shooting 3 arrows per end. So what 300 round are you shooting.

Yep, 5 arrows each end, 4 ends to a game, three games for a 300 round. Shot at 20 yards. Don't have a target in the house to measure, but the blue with white center target. I would guess the bull is approximately 1 1/2" with the X roughly the size of a US Quarter.

When someone is talking a 300 round, they're referring to NFAA blue face target; 20 yards; 12, 5 arrow ends.
Lancaster Classic was shooting WA rules. The 3 arrow ends was the shootoffs, not the qualifing.

deerhunt51, I've shot many 3D competitions over the years, but only shot NFAA on local leagues. I watched the shooters at Vegas a couple different years and realize that type of competition would increase pressure and reduce scores. A few years ago I had a 270 average on the league, but age has reduced my scores some! On this years league we have 8 traditional shooters, and most are shooting in the 170's to 190's.

JustSomeDude, don't underestimate yourself. The trick is just do what you know. I find if I try too hard it goes badly. The way I shoot is so intuitive, and if I try to hard, I shoot poor groups. If I just execute my form while picking a small spot, I shoot tight groups. I guess biggest problem, if you want to nit pick, is I often shoot tight groups that would fit in the 5 spot, but are only half in. So 22 or so points instead of 25.

I've been around it a few times but lots of "tweakers" involved. Three under, fat arrows to cut the lines, and long arrows so the tip of the arrow makes the perfect "pin". Then the line was so damn crowded you couldn't cant your bow without hitting the guy next to you.
I just found no pleasure in it.

Outside in the wind & cold, and no warm up shots prior to shooting for score.
Not my best by a long shot. Not even close to my best average from days gone by, but not bad for a heavy hunting rig.

Shawn,
“If you can average over 250 with a hunting rig you are elite in my book. JRW probably can but I cannot name more then 5 or 6.”
Before I jumped back into target bows a little over five years ago I used to average 270s with my hunting bow (56# TradTech Titan). I would be willing to bet that any of the upper level competitive barebow archers could do that easily with a hunting setup (if I could do it, dang sure a lot of other people can…and better). The only reason we don’t know is they (like me at this time) just don’t shoot those rounds with their hunting bows.

I have never shot a tournament in my life until last year (back surgery) where I wasn't shooting my hunting rig. The above posted scores were with a 70# Bighorn, I was pulling about 60 pounds because I was snap shooting and didn't ever anchor. I have a short draw as well, around 25-26".
I was shooting 2018s with a 125gr point that I tuned by length to shoot a perfect three fletch bullet hole out of my Bighorn when I shot through the paper.
I punched paper 25 years ago when I was hale and hardy.

I used to do it all the time, and one thing I noticed was - my tune/detune would often be different for that point on depending on the difference in angles of the lighting at different indoor ranges.

Ill post my 300 scores this year. I only shot four that mattered. We don't shoot this target all year as we focus more on the fita face and the fita rules. I shoot the nfaa traditional bow for a week and a half out of the year. This year it was only nfaa sectionals and nfaa nationals. Sectionals were 286 (fita arrow aiming under the paper) and 298 (point on heavier arrow). At nationals I shot a 281 and a 290. (different arrow all together). Just not a lot of time with that bow and setup to be really consistent. Could be good could be bad, just don't know.

I thought I would post the top seven averages from our winter league. All of the averages are over 10 weeks so it is a good representation of our scores. All of us shoot no sights most off the shelf a few plungers. I fell in the middle of the pack. This is not my favorite Archery game to play but it gives us something to to do during the long northern NY winter. Shooter 1 - 259 Shooter 2 - 252.2 Shooter 3 - 239.9 Shooter 4 - 233.1 My score with a bow that shot a buck and doe this past season. Shooter 5 - 232.9 Shooter 6 - 222.5 Shooter 7 - 204 I don’t know how it compares with other groups but we have a lot of fun. Also I should say that Shooter 3 is my wife and Cynthia got me. Our # 1 & 2 shooters are a husband and wife as well.

Still shooting lefty, slowing getting it. Shot a 250 today. I still have an occasional wild arrow, shot a 20 with a zero today! Left handed still feels weird but if I focus on getting everything and me all lined up they go in. About the time I’m able to back to right hand I might not want too!!
P.S. MR, Demmer. You are not human anymore,,,,shooting a 298?????? Most of the compounders I shoot with can’t do that. I was estatic shooting a 287 now....Guess it’s like Ford trucks ad’s. “We didn’t move the bar we are the bar” You know as long as I’m breathing though I’m still coming for you. only shot a 187 last Thursday Frisker, but I shoot at more than 6 yards also. Someone's got to keep this average business down. I look at it as lots of opportunity for improvement. Maybe if I shot more than once a week, it would help.

I've only shot once this year. However, when I'm ready to start shooting with my new Bear TD, I plan to blow that bullseye right out of the target!

Frisky... Most of us old guys will be dead and gone before you get up enough nerve to shoot that junky new bow. I didn't appreciate that "bogus" remark about my 300 score. I still have my 2012 score card. If I knew how to post pictures I would show you. I shot a 141 on Friday and a 146 on Saturday. Even you can add the two scores together and come up with 287. I might add I was shooting a B50 string and GT carbons, bare shafts with 500 grains up front. It is what it is so deal with it.

With my indoor Barebow I average 278-281. With my hunting bow I average 260. Need to work on the hunting bow some more :)

got a 223 tonight. Happy with that, still working on gap shooting. Do not want to go to three under. Might add some more tip weight though.

All I know is I'm going to a 420 tournament tomorrow. First for me, I have only shot at league, so guess I will report on how many shooter's beat my score. If this thread is any indication, maybe I should stay home LOL.

If any one wants a printable Vegas sized one spot (it's just the 4, 5 X section of the 300 round target), message me.
It is official size and fits on a standard piece of paper.

So I shot a 263 at the 420 tournament Sat. Not great, but not terrible. The MI State record for silver seniors is 310, don't know what it is for senior bare bow class.

So on that 420 target the X ring is a 7 only if you don't touch the line the line around it is 6, I couldn't hardly believe a line is an entire scoring ring. Anyway the rest of the white is a 5. Unless you are really on a 7 is a unicorn, I shot two 7 in the two practice rounds, and only three more for the entire game. I shot two 6's the rest were 5 and 4. Interesting. It was not my best shooting, but fun anyway.

I have to decided to focus on the 300 round and give up trying to hunt. So I measured out a course and have shot it 3 days in a row. First day 62 inch Hoyt Satori #35 182. Second day same bow 165. Today I switched to my Hoyt Excel with #32 SF longs and got a 188. I see fatigue is going to be a problem even at #32, and focus also. Too many wild shots into the 1 ring because of lack of focus.
I just shoot instintively and do not gap shoot.

I tried to shoot a spot with my selfbow and wood arrows a couple of days ago, I was beyond awful. I guess my days of shooting a good 300 round are long gone.
My poor performance did make want to practice and get better. I shot my last indoor 300 round in the 80s, it's been a while. At almost 71 I can tell age has taken its toll.

Actually, Lancaster is an altogether different beast. You shoot the FITA round, BUT if you hit the tiny X circle it's scored 11 vs. 10, so you can score higher there than anywhere.

Shot my first 300 round this morning. Not in competition, but in my backyard. I know it’s not the same. I just wanted a benchmark to see improvement. I’ve been shooting the best I ever have lately.
Tougher than I thought it would be!

228 is a good start, probably the toughest mental game in Archery and takes time to build confidence, take your time between shots, normally last 2 arrows are where the most errors happen.
Not been well last couple of months so taking it easy with my shooting, want to try as have new riser and interested to see some scores.

Shot my first 300 of the season with new Gillo GQ riser, scored 285, I'm very happy with this Riser, gives quite a soft and forgiving shot.
I'm Stringwalking 39# OTF so that score is achievable for a decent Barebow. anything in the 280 range during practice I'm happy with and a low 290 is upper ceiling of my practice scores which I've only done a few times, 285 normally takes a few weeks to reach, so a really good start to the season and that score would normally give me something between 275 and 280 in competition. I think with this riser and some work I can bring my average up in competition.

In winter league we shoot the target that Kustom Kodiak posted above. We score the white a 10,then 9,8,7,6,. We shoot our hunting bows. 30 total shots.Three shots at a time.I have no idea who made the rules ,but that is what we shoot. If you can keep 30 shots in a 6 and 1/14 inch circle at 20 yds. which is the 9 ring you shoot a 270. Nine shooters, and no one yet has shot a 270 average for the year, but some of us are shooting the high 260,s for average.I don,t know if that makes us average shooters or above shooters ,or below average shooters ,but those are the true facts.

The Custom Kodiak picture it shows a 20 yards NFAA target face and is counted 5 (white) down to 1. A 300 round to this target face is 60 arrows shot in packages of 5.

Very possible to go 280 and up using a short bow if you have enough mass and a simple aim method using my releases...with no finger pinch, a full out tournament bow isn't much more accurate. The mass is so important, you have to hold dead on thru the shot.
