I haven't seen a post or magazine article by him in years. Is he ok?

He's into motorcycles now.

Jerry Gowins, photographer. I always liked his articles in Traditional Bowhunter.

Was wondering about Ferret not too long ago, enjoyed his posts also.

We are talking about Mickey Lotz correct? He hasn't been on here since 2003

From: 4nolz@work

I have a Mickey Lotz selfbow with the infamous "floppy rest"

From: PEARL DRUMS
Date: 15-Feb-18

Mickey checked in on Primitive Archer about 4 years ago, don't believe he has been on since. I know his simple board bow directions helped a lot of people get started making real bows :)

From: tonto59
Date: 15-Feb-18

I still have his simple board bow directions saved on my computer. I always enjoyed his posts as well. Back when they were having the "White wood Wars" Very interesting and sometimes funny posts.

From: BowAholic
Date: 15-Feb-18

funny thing...I contacted Mickey just the other day and asked him about attending MoJam 20 this July. If you want to visit with the Ferret he says he will be attending MoJam. This 2oth anniversary will be great with him, JD Jones, John Scifres, and many more of the old crew attending.

From: Eric Krewson
Date: 15-Feb-18

I remember Micky posting that he had become deathly allergic to osage dust and had to stop building bows.

After 20 years of breathing the stuff I am up to having to wear a cartridge respirator to make bows which detracts from the overall experience.

From: badger
Date: 15-Feb-18

I met Mickey at the Tennessee Classic. Cool guy. That osage dust has driven a lot of us to change our ways. I work strictly with draw knife and scraper anymore, no sanders or bandsaws, it really eliminates the dust issue.

Micky is a really good guy. He would always bring hotdogs from Hell to Mojam. Sure miss seeing him. Will go again this year for sure.

From: Arcus Pater
Date: 15-Feb-18

Years ago I reached out to Mickey prior to a trip to Ohio, asking for suggestions on places to hunt after the business portion of the trip was finished.

He met me and my then 12 yr old son at a local diner. He gave us a hand drawn map to a local area where saw deer & turkey. He also gave my son a small knapped flint arrowhead.

I miss reading his posts and articles. Great ambassador of our sport.

Go to Rideohio.org, in General Discussion there is a thread called 2018....the ride continues. He post in that thread almost daily. He has been a roll the past few years to see how many days he can ride his motorcycle in a year, I think last year he rode just over 20,000 miles.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there. Curtiss, was it Brother Randy?

From: The Ferret
Date: 15-Feb-18

Geezalou, all you old guys are still hanging around? lol

I haven't been here since 2003? Gads. That's 15 years.

Yes, Dianne and I plan on going to Mojam this year. Thanks to Bob for the heads up. Will be great to see some of the old faces again. May bring a bunch of stuff I need to sell. Primitive bow/arrow building type stuff. Doesn't look like my son is going to be interested in continuing the family tradition.

I retired from my day job 5 years ago and since then my wife and I have toured 42 of the lower 48 states, 2 Canada Provinces and 5 countries in Europe by motorcycle. Hitting 2 more states not previously ridden in this June. Last year I rode 338 days and 29,105 miles. I try and ride some every day. At a soon to be 68 (gasp) don't know how many years I have left to ride..or hunt. I still hunt BTW, still out there with wood bows and arrows, I just don't shoot anything anymore. Slain a bunch of critters in my life, don't feel the need to kill any more, but I still like being out there.

Anyhow, y'all are too kind with the nice things you've said about me and it's appreciated.

See you in the woods,

Mickey

Good times!

BTW it was Curtis who named them "Hot Dogs from Hell"

It was brother Randy that mixed them up in the pots and gave the super hot ones to guys that wanted mild ones and vice versa. Good night that was funny.Hey if I bring some this year, will someone have a way to cook them?

MStyles, all is mostly good. Thanks for asking. Some medical issues that come along later in life for most folks, but they hasn't stopped me from doing the things I love. I can see in the pics I used to have some color in my beard. That is gone lol. Not sure I can squat down to look at a piece of Osage anymore. Have to hold it at chest level (although my chest level would be squatting for some of you guys). Definitely can't get up and down off the floor easily so that rules out camping. Since Dianne will be coming this year, the temps should be reasonable. Ahh Missouri in July. What was the name of that hotel with the air conditioning and pool we used to stay at?

Will Timo or Wingnut & family be there? Been forever.

From: ButchMo
Date: 16-Feb-18

Micky, Really good to see you on here and looking forward to seeing you and Diane again. I still camp next to Loyd so if you need a place to sit in the shade, you are always welcome.

Bob, sorry I didn't respond. Looking to forward to see you too.

From: MStyles
Date: 16-Feb-18

Mickey, the color in the beard, the getting up from a squat made me laugh. I still get down to do something from a squat or more like kneeling, it’s just getting back up that is difficult. I should tell you I put a “Ferret Floppy Rest” on a Hickory selfbow I made. It worked very with my POC’s but I tend to shoot heavy hickory 23/64” arrows now, so if you have a new idea, I’m all ears. BTW, Hearing of your motorcycle touring sounds like so much fun. Anyway, it’s good to see you’re still out there.

Those... were... the... days, my friend, we thought they'd ne-ver end...!

Seeing those names and handsome(?) faces takes me back to some of the most reasured times of my life. Oh, that Dean were still around to bring some smoked chubs to share as he "mooched" his way from campfire to campfire. And Jerry Pierce, just being there and being... Jerry!

It's awfully good to hear from you, Mickey! I've been away from Cloverdale as life and health got in the way, but with the promises of seeing some of you fine gents again, I may have to see if I can drag my sorry carcass across the miles to see all y'all.

Hawkeye are you going?

From: Hawkeye Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 16-Feb-18

Nolz,

After seeing this thread, that is my intent.

My 93 year old mother has been living with us and recovering after a life-threatening bout with flu and pneumonia that started two days after Christmas. So far, I had to cancel a trip to Milbury (OUCH!), have canceled my reservations to see some dear friends at PBS, and will have to step aside from attending one of Barry Wensel's final Boot Camps. It's a privilege to have the opportunity to be a caregiver for Mom, but it came at a very difficult time for a string of special things I was hoping to do. Sometimes, life gets in the way...

I hope we will have been able to determine the next steps that need to take place well before July. If so, I hope to soak in all that Cloverdale is, once again. Life is short, good friends are few. I think we need to spend time with them whenever there is the opportunity!

You making the long trip up, Mike???

From: The Ferret
Date: 16-Feb-18

several things

Ranger my current touring bike is a Honda ST1300. My current local rider is a Honda CB1100.

Daryl good to see you are still around. Look forward to seeing you again

Now, reading Daryl's post about Dean no longer being around threw me. "I thought, where is he?" Had to google him and am shocked and saddened to read of his passing. I had no idea. Wish someone had thought to tell me. Dean and I were good friends, spent a lot of time together at his house, in his workshop, shooting around this back yard, attending big archery events, hunting deer and rabbits. He was always trying to feed me something weird lol (like Chubs). My wife has been to his house, my grand daughter as well. My Torges bow "Amish Perfection" hangs in a rack downstairs with some other very special bows. Great guy and an artist with wood. I will miss him. A lot. I also lost my longtime hunting buddy Maggie McGee last year (the guy who nicknamed me the Ferret) and was at his bedside every week right up until the end. Guess this is what happens when we reach a certain age but gosh it's hard. Don't know what to think other than we will all get together again one of these days at a special campfire in the sky. So long Dean

Great to see/hear from you my friend. Sure sad how time goes by. Wingnut isn't able to make the 20th mojam, I believe trashwood/Rusty is on the list. I'll be there Lord willing. Will never forget the time me and wingnut stayed the night with you and Dianne. Looking forward to visiting.

I am glad I started this thread too. Glad to see the mischevious Ferret is still kicking. I think I am one of the very few people to ask for seconds after beating my first " hotdog from Hell." Mickey, motorcycles and bows are not mutually exclusive activities, you know.

From: The Ferret
Date: 18-Feb-18

Jim yep, the Dumb Bunch and it was fitting. Many of us were there with John at the end. Even though we are all old and long past our prime, we were talking about another hunt if he made it out of hospice, but he just couldn't beat the big C. Terrible disease.

JD good to see you man. You got the prettiest bow I ever made. As perfect a piece of Osage as I ever saw. Hope it served you well.

Curtis, you till chef-ing? Sometimes a change is called for. I think I just got to the burned out stage and had to take a break. Turned into along break lol. I still play with my bows, just don't make them anymore. I still shoot pretty well.

From: The Ferret
Date: 18-Feb-18

BTW Butch still have my moccasins you made me. They are awesome. My feet grew (couldn't have been my legs doggone it) so they no longer fit, but I will keep them forever. Dianne still has her wood wizard on the mantle too. Cherished keepsakes.

Will be great to see you and Lloyd.
