Hi PEOPLES, I was stumbling around on You Tube and found this deal about the ancient Egyptians. You have to skip to around 20 or 25 minute mark for the archery gear. My question relates to the speed of the arrow out of these primitive bows? I won't give that away. Just that I thought something of an exaggeration??? What say Y'ALL? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBL3uT5YMdg PS? If this is inappropriate for the SITE then I apologize.

Historians do tend to BS a bit when they are trying to push a point.

I just rolled my eyes on the FPS that these guys were talking about. Not to mention the constant photos of the melon.

I heard the hype, but I did not see a chronograph.

Just the same, I have always been blown away when I thought about some ancient guy understanding that a bending member is in compression on the inside and tension on the outside; and there he placed the horn and sinew respectively. It seems that he lived a long time ago on the Asian steppe. That weapon threatened people as far away as Europe.

You have to remember that because a bow is made from natural materials, doesn't mean the performance is primitive by any means.

I've seen many all wood longbows that would shoot just as fast a glass/wood laminated longbow (with the same weight arrow) that was made yesterday. And that doesn't make me unique. dean can tell you the same thing. He's seen them too.

Our own badger, has shot all wood bows over 200fps.

Jay Massey built a sinew backed recurve that Ron Hardcasle and some others that consistently shot 185-190.

And these were actually shot through calibrated chronographs, so the numbers are real.

Those speeds are on par with any similar design bow being made today.
