Nothing against our neighbours to the South but with the exchange rate, shipping costs and taxes/duties it's becoming a bit too expensive to order smaller numbers from the States.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any quality suppliers of wooden shafts in Canada?

I'm looking for some hardwood shafts, but any wood which could stand up to stump shooting/roving would do.

Thanks.

Are hardwood dowels available in your neck of the woods? I buy Hickory dowels (3/8”X36”), stick them in my 1/2”drill, and spin/sand&taper them down to 23/64” or 11/32”. Tougher than any other arrow wood I’ve used. 99% of the time I end up refletching/refinishing them at some point.

I'm with MStyles but I use Oak.

I'm in Toronto and make my own, but you have to make 10 times the number you want to get the quality of a matched set. Not really a cost problem since the cost is free to low, more the time involved in processing all the shafts spine testing them and weighing them. I have far too many hobbies already to want to do this were it not for necessity.

Same issue applies to dowels, though I suppose you could spine test them in the store at places like HD.

When I used to buy shafts I bought them by 100, I would probably use Wapiti these days. Small numbers don't work. The problem with large number buys for me is I don't actually use them all up. Over time one's bows and fitness vary, so one can end up with a pretty huge collections of stranded shafts.

True shaft is a joke. I have had terrible luck with Canadian suppliers to include another joke Randy Hunt. Surewood runs like a business should.

Thanks Rooty. ... I'm pretty sure the owner of true shaft is a member of leatherwall. My order has been a couple months in the works now.... no money put out yet and I hope for the best.

It would be real great if a quality wood arrow company started up in canada. Great lake arrow in port hope ontario is a distributor for Hildebrand arrows. Unfortunately Hildebrand hasn't been producing shafts lately.

Don't care bad communication is just that. Takes months to get back and then has parts of a simple order. A very poor showing. I would be embarrassed if I ran a business like that. I a. Not and never will be. CRAP

Thanks for the suggestions. I've used Great Lakes Arrow in the past for some sitka spruce and douglas fir shafts. They made nice arrows but didn't seem as tough when it came to stump shooting as some have suggested.

I guess I'll either have to bite the bullet for some hardwood shafts from the states or try again with some spruce/fir.

drive down to the states for one of the larger northwestern shoots, you will find surewood shafts there selling, they are great and it would make for good memories.

i'm shocked that you could even ship arrow shafts to canada , unless the laws have changed and i doubt that they have, i couldn't ship any gun parts or even rifle scopes to canada when i was in business

I just got a hold of Wayne at TSA. Hopefully he gets on and can give explanation. I have 3 dozen fir shafts from him and they are the best I've had. Fantastic grain, very matched and he inks the weight and spine on each shaft on its stiff side. You can use 12 out of 12 when you buy his.

Ya I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. I own a small business too and understand how hectic it can get when your busy.

It sounds like they go to great length to harvest wood in the most environmentally friendly way possible... maybe a reason for the delay.

Try David Cartwright at Arrowmaker Traditions.. [email protected] I bought some beautiful footed shafts from him about 3yrs ago.He is up in Blyth On Sandy

You should try Island Arrowsmith. They are at Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island. They supply a variety of wood types. First rate, they have a website you can visit. SD
