A comparison with the Holy Grail Drake. The Drake, at 45 pounds, is a smooth drawing bow with a very slight pinch. I got to where I didn’t notice it. The Bear is 47 pounds, and I can feel the extra 2 pounds. Smoothness is the same but there’s no pinch at all at my 28” draw. I still plan to hunt with the Grail but it will be a back-up until I re-finish it. The clear coat has worn off in several spots. The Bear, with the satin finish, is better for hunting. I don’t like shine, so I plan to leave it satin. So there you have it. The new Super Bow of Bows! +P+ power in the limbs makes plain old Fascor out-dated! You have to be a legend to get it, so I’m the only one with it.

Nice! The deer are in trouble now.

From: Frisky

Nope. No dings. Just the photo. I was surprised I couldn't find a single imperfection in the limbs or riser. They are perfect! What really surprised me was limb fit. I thought it might be sloppy, but it was effortless! Fit was perfect! Super smooth! No creaking at all on the draw.

From: KyPhil

Yes, deer truly are in trouble! Many adventures await this new bow.

From: Lowcountry

You said the limbs were built to your specs - what were your specs? Or is that top secret stuff?

From: Frisky
Date: 08-Jan-18

My specs are top secret. Only Fred knew of +P+, as he invented it and put it away for me.

I'll check the brace height. I just used the string that was given to me with the riser. It looked good so I think I'll leave it there until later.

Joe

From: Dry Bones

I had truly hoped you did have a set of turquoise limbs made for that riser. It would only have been fitting. SO.. Like Low Country said. What's the specs??

It's beautiful Joe, and with a 48 year history to go along with it. The Bear Custom Kodiak doesn't take a back seat to any other model out there...and you don't need no steenking bolts.

From: SB

8 1/4- 8 1/2" on brace Joe. And take that crap off the string....you don't need it and it only slows the bow down.

I'm glad the original owner has his Deathmaster back; I'm glad Joe got a very nice bow in exchange for it; and I'm all for anything that extends the life of a nice old Drake.

Just got in from cat feeding and grocery shopping. First off, thanks for the compliments! I figured you Bear fans would like this one, and George is right, the brackets were the best idea in TD bows. If you've never tried those brackets, you should do so. I didn't expect them to function so flawlessly. Maybe I just got lucky, but the limbs go in and lock like butter! The string with puffs came with the bow. I normally don't use puffs but am going to try them, for now. I finally made enough money to begin making products, and I think I'll perfect the brush button to the point where no silencers will be needed. For now, this string will be fine, as I'm having another made that will wear my own stuff.

I really like the rest, but it won't be quite up to snuff with a Hoyt stick-on rest, so I might change it later on. I'm going to install the quiver the fella gave me, as they hold rock solid and it fits my fat wild shoot shafts perfectly. Later, I can also get a replacement gripper for carbons or rubber coat this one to fit carbons.

From: TrapperKayak

That's a beautiful bow Joe. A couple things I noticed: (Not taking away from this bow, its a nice one): I noticed the string grooves on the tips seem awful deep don't they? And I personally am not a fan of this type of mechanical limb attachments. But that's just me. Other than that, I really love that bow.

From: Treeman
Date: 09-Jan-18

Nice bow Frisky!

From: crookedstix
Date: 09-Jan-18

Trapper, I remember that the first Bear I ever owned, a greenie Grizz from K-Mart way back in 1974,had those exact same string notches--all the way through the glass and into the maple. Bear has been doing them that way for a long time, at least.

From: Red Dogs Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 09-Jan-18

My thoughts on the string grooves were "Wow! A Bear where the grooves actually line up even on each side!" :) They must have built a better jig!

Nice bow Joe! Hopefully it's a Super BOWL Bow!!

That's a really nice bow Joe. Glad that you ended up with a bow you are as enthused about as the Deathmaster.

I'll visit again and shoot that bow...and maybe even the Turquoise Terror!

My 1976 Kodiak Magnum also has string grooves like that. Deep and not connected to the "Y" groove.

From: RymanCat

All this praise for a guy who pops his cherry on a Bear TD that most of us all owed or have in the stables. Are you serious. I bet most will vote next for Opra.

Winfur for pres. she knows how to ruin a country further. Wonder how she will do with rocket man.LOL

Revolution going to need more than any Bear TD.LOL

From: Fisher Cat
Date: 09-Jan-18

Joe, You've gone over to the dark side where I refuse to follow. It's a pretty bow (for a Bear) though, and I'm glad you went with a 56" length. If I were forced to buy a Bear, it would be just like yours (only in a more manly draw weight). I hope you enjoy it. - John

From: Frisky
Date: 09-Jan-18

My shoulders were a little sore last night, but I hadn't shot more than 50 pounds in two months. I don't see a problem with the limb grooves, as long as the string is in them. RymanCat just can't get over the fact I have another weapon in my arsenal of destruction. He's upset I have the best limbs, limbs that equal the cast of any Bear 57 pounder out there!

Not wanting to rain on Frisky's parade, I am witholding comments on his shiny new bauble of Bear SuperBow for now. To his credit, it doesn't have to be the fastest or prettiest horse on the track to make Frisky happy, thank goodness.

But did anyone else notice that the tiller on the Drake seems way off, or is it just the way the bow is positioned in the photo?

From: ca
Date: 09-Jan-18

Very nice bow enjoy.

From: Frisky
Date: 09-Jan-18

The Drake, like most Drake Hunter-Flights, has a high positive tiller. That's a characteristic of those poor West Coast bowyers. Of course, Fred knew tiller and insisted his bows be done right. That said, once the brace was set at around 7.5", the Drake shot lights out.

Joe

From: Frisky
Date: 09-Jan-18

Brace on the Bear is at 8.25".

Joe

From: crookedstix
Date: 09-Jan-18

When Joe says the Drake "shot lights out," he's referring to the overhead lights in his garage, where he shoots under the cover of darkness.

From: stykman
Date: 09-Jan-18

After all is said and done, it's still just a Bear.

From: longbowdave Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member
Date: 09-Jan-18

Nice bow, but now you are left with just your personality to make you stand out, turquoise added to the legend persona. Fred's already done it all with that bow...

From: dean
Date: 09-Jan-18

That will work nice for you, Joe. What are +P+ limbs? Did I miss something? Either way, I hope you have many successes with your new bow.

From: Backcountry
Date: 09-Jan-18

No wonder Frisky Joe is shooting his lights out with the Drake's tiller being so far off. Hopefully he won't have that problem with the SuperBow.

Nice bow Frisky. When are you going to show us how well you can shoot with it? Maybe let MT stop by and try shooting it so HE can give us the real low down? Just kidding. Sounds like a great additional to your killer arsenal. ENJOY! ~OB55

From: RymanCat

From: Frisky
Date: 09-Jan-18

All I can say is at least I didn't shoot through the garage window like two that stopped by here. Plus, MT paid $2000 for a pile of junk Silvertip that can't come close to the greatness of this bear!

Dean- +P+ referes to extra, extra power built into these particular limbs.

Joe

From: skookum
Date: 09-Jan-18

Frisky, call crookedstix——he probably thinks you are serious about your new, very common, mass-produced bow. He probably doesn't realize your sense of humor; and that you are telling one of your famous asinine, obtuce, half-witted, moronic, dopey, uncomprehending, and lame-brained jokes. ...skookum

From: 3Ditional

With all the praise you're giving this Super Bow of Bows, you better keep it far apart from your Grail...........I can feel the tension all the way out here!

I'm sure a lot here on the wall, including myself, would want one just like that. Congrats!

Skookum, I just acquired a lovely 60" White Special, in a 45# draw. I was good enough to offer it to Frisky so he wouldn't have to shoot a Bear...and he called it a pile of kindling!! There's just no getting through to him.

From: Jinkster

Sort of explains the sudden influx of Bear TD's listed in the classifieds the past day or so...gobs of'em! LOL!

From: Frisky
Date: 09-Jan-18

LOL! I never thought the day would come when Skookum would hurt my feelings! Now, I might have to stick with that finger-pinching old Drake that even he hates! As for that White Special, talk about a broken piece of kindling, lol! Kerry wants Fred to make a repo of it. I say put it inside the wood-burner on a cold night! HAHA!!

Joe

From: Frisky
Date: 09-Jan-18

Fred! I also forgot to mention Crookedstix wouldn't trade the Mojo for the Deathmaster, as he told me he'd rather have it sit, unused, on his wall until the mice chewed the snakeskins off of it! That Mojo could have been used in feats of daring and greatness, and now the Bear Custom Kodiak TD will get the honors!

Joe

From: crookedstix
Date: 10-Jan-18

Jinkster is quite right about the sudden spate of T/D Bears showing up for sale! Whether people are abandoning them due to the new taint Frisky has brought to that model, or just because they're doggy in general, is the real question here. We won't know the answer until Frisky takes a few shots with his, and reports on its performance.

In fact I'd prefer to hear MT Quiver's report on it; I'm not quite sure Frisky can be trusted to give an impartial evaluation of his own bow...call it a hunch.

I will never forget the first deer that i killed with a Bear takedown. I had been hunting with an 82@27 Sculz built reverse Tembo, I was holding out for one particular deer. i got gotten 3 pheasants that season, but I took no shots at any deer. Towards the last day of the season I took out the Bear, 10 below in the morning. I knew that I could not shoot the longbow with those heavy gloves. After the sun came up, I was hoping for some warming and it got windy and cloudy. I thought screw this and was heading for my car, 1954 Pontiac with only 22,000 miles on it. I saw a bunch of pheasants fly to an old oxbow on the Rock River. What the heck, the walk may warm me up. I stalked the oxbow chanel with a 135 Deadhead ready to go off to never land. An 8 point buck jumped up ran out about 30 yards, slowed to a walk and walked right into that Deadhead. Maybe the Drake is fast, but accuracy reigns supreme.

Can't wait for EmTee Quiver's assessment. I bet he's too soft-hearted to be objective, however.

From: Frisky
Date: 10-Jan-18

He's EmTee alright! MT knows nothing about bows or hunting. Talk about a bag of wind! I have to teach him how to field-dress a deer, so what does that tell you? Anyway, I just had a friend stop by to see the bow. He's a non-archer. He was impressed with the compass. He thought the workmanship was outstanding. He loved the brackets! He commented on all the work that went into the bow. Yep, this is no old, ready to break jalopy!

Joe

Joe...you won't likely have any issues with that "bracket" takedown system. I have one from 1969 that has never had an issue!

From: dean

Joe, you said that compass will only point south, to the promised land, Iowa. I was going ask if I could borrow it, but I need one that will find the true north jump off point, Ely.

MT will probably shoot the SuperBow a few times, hand it back to Frisky and walk away, saying nothing. His momma probably taught him, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

His expected silence on Leatherwall will speak volumes.

I am glad that crookedstix talked Frisky into getting that south facing compass. We wanted to make sure he didn't end up in Canada or Maine!

Kerry and I have been on Joe for years to toe the line for a shoot off...his excuse right now, and until late May, will be the cold weather.

He won't even try the "P-Shooter" until then!

Stay tuned...

This is sickening, repulsive and disgusting. Can anyone doubt that Frisky is truly the legend? This creepy guy started this mystery and got over 300 hits on the first thread. This thread is already at 100. He is holding the LW captive. All this is over a junky contraption that the focus is on those ugly clamps. Will it ever end?

From: crookedstix
Date: 11-Jan-18

I can understand the reason behind wanting a takedown bow, and I don't find this particular attachment system to be especially offensive...in fact, I much prefer the looks of it to something that's all gobbed up with antler knobs, or even worse the Pearson takedowns that had all that shiny metal holding the arrow way up off the hand.

Is your objection to takedowns in general? They've been around a long time; I think Cassius Styles was making them back in the 1920's...and I think metal has always been involved, one way or another. Bob Lee, Harold Groves, Pearson and Bear have all made them, and used metal to do it...so what's the issue here?

From: Lost arrow
Date: 11-Jan-18

To each his own. I would assume most people have no problem with take down bows. I think they go against the simple yet artistic and graceful lines of a trad bow. That's not the issue. The issue is the Minnesota Manipulator's ability to generate huge responses about everything. Guess I'm jealous. I'm done.

From: Backcountry

If there are issues, it's not because the SuperBow is a takedown!

I just can't see Frisky with that model because there seems to be so many of them around. I picture Frisky with some obscure, rare, or one-off bow that no one has ever heard of. That way he could continue his bloviating ways with no one to counter his wild claims. All that, and it's only a step up from his '76er!

I really do want Frisky's SuperBow to be something special. And I hope those ugly latches don't fail him on some hypothetical trip of a lifetime.

From: Backcountry
Date: 11-Jan-18

If Frisky would just get an old Rambler or Studebaker with fold-down seats to transport his bows, he wouldn't need a takedown.

From: crookedstix
Date: 11-Jan-18

Backcountry,

I offered Frisky just such a rare, wonderful old bow as you mention. He called it a pile of kindling!

Fred and I have both offered him wise counsel over the years, but for the most part he ignores it.

From: Frisky
Date: 11-Jan-18

First off, I'll soon be offering more insight into the great latch system Papa Bear invented. I'm quite impressed with it! Secondly, this is a true custom bow. Says so right on the bow! It has custom workmanship. I can't find a flaw! Thirdly, I didn't spend a penny on it. I got rid of an old clunker for this bow. Is that not the deal of the century? Finally, the riser, as Crookedstix pointed out, was sent on the Super Moon. The limbs were shipped on the Wolf Moon. That means all I have to do is inaugurate it on the Blood Moon, January 31st, and I have a Super Bow of Bows, properly set up and ready for action! I might even invite MT over to witness the inauguration! It's things like this, call them coincidences if you want, that set my bows apart from all others. This is why the entire world watches to see what I'm shooting and follows along, Jinkster being a prime example. However, my future holds another bow that will knock the planet off its axis!

Joe

From: Backcountry
Date: 11-Jan-18

Kerry, we all sympathize. You, Skookum, Pdid and probably many others have gone far beyond the call of duty trying to keep Frisky Joe from going off the rails.

Besides all the previous observations, it seems such a waste to limit the SuperBow to a combination that only yields 56" of wood, fiberglass, and metal. I don't think Frisky is getting his money's worth. He should have followed the bow designer's lead and gone for a 60" model.

For a shorty, a Howatt Hi-Speed or even a Red Wing Hunter would have been better choices, although they, admittedly, are pretty common. Bob Savage, Frisky's guru, is full of Spam when he claimed these are slow bows compared to his Deat Hamster.

Here's the takedown you should have gotten Joe...it is simple, artistic and graceful as the limbs meld into the riser.

And, as you witnessed at your Garage Light Range against the running rooster target, it is FAST!!

The Bear latch system is a close second to the Chek-Mate in terms of looks and may exceed it in terms of functionality, providing it does not explode!

I too am not a fan of large knobs holding overlapping limbs on.

I must take you to task on making denigrating comments about the bow you once hailed as the "Bow of Bows." Now it's an "old clunker"!!

After I shot it I was a true believer. Now I am crestfallen and feel hollowed out...jeez!

From: Frisky

Frisky....I want to apologize for the negative remarks about your new bow. Just because I don't like it doesn't make it wrong. You have earned your status as The Legend on the LW. Your vast following is proof of that. 72 years has made me more sensitive and less tolerant. Crookedstix responded to my last post by closing " So what's the issue here "? I spent yesterday in the woods with my Super Necedah pondering just what is the issue. It's me and my unwillingness to respect opinions different from mine. So please accept my apology. Lost Arrow, I too would never even consider owning Frisky's latest bundle of glue, sawdust, and steel, so your instincts to reject it, and him as well, were probably quite sound. However, I think it's important to look at the bigger picture:

First off, the former owner is reunited with his DeathHamster, and he and his son can actually take that bow outdoors again. I'm quite sure that it had been inside for these last fourteen years, until Pdiddly and I forced Frisky to let us test it this past fall. So that's one good thing.

Second, all of Leatherwall will be spared the ongoing flow of...hyperbole about that bow, now that Frisky has parted with it. There's another good thing.

Third, Frisky has demonstrated that he can actually string this new bow--another plus. Fourth, assuming that he can step up to the full 47# draw weight and actually shoot this new bow, he will be adding many years to the lifespan of his old Drake--and that's a very good thing. Any Drake deserves as long a lifespan as it can possibly be given...but especially one with turquoise limbs.

A final blessing is this: Now, the legions of hunters stuck with a Grayling bow will have a front man, eternally singing the praises of their ponderous cudgels. No longer will their hearts be filled with envy every time they see a Browning, Drake, Howatt, Wing, or FASCO...they will believe that they have something just as good. So everybody wins! And it's all thanks to Frisky's new bow!

From: Backcountry
Date: 12-Jan-18

So, arrows from Frisky's bows have so much arch that he shot his garage lights out? Is that what I'm hearing?

From: Frisky
Date: 12-Jan-18

Speaking of shooting the garage lights out. When I first invited MTQuiver to shoot with me in the driveway, he began to complain about the garage door cable hanging down and the trouble light cord being too low in front of the target. I asked him if he was planning on shooting the garage light out! The poor guy started to pout but somehow managed to avoid shooting out the light or hitting the cord- barely.

Has Joe ever shot this bow of bows? This is all starting to sound like one of the guys on my construction crew. He got drunk in a bar, picked up a good looking young gal, was so proud of his luck and accomplishment, that he took her home with him to show the wife.

From: Frisky
Date: 12-Jan-18

No shot has yet been taken with this bow. As stated before, the riser was sent under the Super Moon, the limbs sent under the Wolf Moon, and I'll take the first shot with it under the Blood Moon on January 31st. That will add to the greatness and power of the bow.

Joe

From: Lost arrow
Date: 12-Jan-18

I extended a sincere apology to Frisky. If he does not except it then that's on him. I apologize to crookedstix for mentioning him in my post. It opened the door for Frisky to unload on him. Is it just me but don't you guys see something here? He started this new bow circus with a enormous display of excitement. It hasn't let up throughout this whole event. I think his arrogance may be the result of a type of hyperventilation caused by extreme excitement. Plus he is afraid to shoot the new bow. I for one am going to cut him some slack. I'm not one to hassle someone having mental or psychological issues.

From: crookedstix
Date: 12-Jan-18

Yes, he is a bit more worked up than usual. This moon stuff is a little spooky, and it was definitely a mistake on Monkeyball's part to send him that collage. Frisky started this thread Dec. 24th last year. After all this exposure I see how popular they are. I can see the advantages. When I read through this, I think of this photo, this moment in the woods:

We took this photo to represent a reflection of the overall hunting experience…because it’s about the journey that led us here, to this very spot in the wild. This may be the successes, the frustrations; the countless hours of scouting, studying, practicing, planning; the rhythmic lapping of river water against a Coleman canoe; the pre-dawn, headlamp-guided walks into your deer stand; the light wind current and thermals causing your breath vapors to rise and drift as you exhale into the frost-bitten air; the welcome sounds of the woods and sweet absence of man-made chatter; the sudden rush of a mature, commanding whitetail buck confidently coming into your calls or your rattling horns; the silent time when your mind wanders and you contemplate your life and how your living it, judging yourself; when thoughts of your loved ones and truest friends are interrupted by a rutting buck that offers a perfect broadside bowshot that will aid in a clean ethical kill; the decision to pass or deliberately take the shot; your selfless buddies that help you without gripe or question; the comfort in knowing that your supportive family understands why you hunt and the satisfaction of knowing that same family will be eating protein-rich backstraps that The Lord provided…but only after the work is done. All those grand experiences that lead to the collective moment when you realize that it’s not about me, and you lower your head in humility and thankfulness. Then your smile grows big and you take some more photos with a deer that you honor, respect, and are proud to have harvested. Ode to the hunt.

Folks, pay little heed to Milk River's warm-hearted approach to this sport. It's the KILL that counts! Plus, it's the bow. It's standing toe-to-toe with the quarry, not shooting it from a tree or pop-up, and taking it out with a nice heart shot at 4 yards! It's coldly and calculatingly putting meat in the freezer. It's calling some slave, like MTQuiver, and forcing him to find, gut and drag it out. That's the essence of hunting! This new bow, thanks to Milk River (have to give him his due) is going to fit right into my master plan! In 2018, I plan to spend more time developing my system, such as advanced combine and roadside watching, to try to get another one that's already down. Otherwise, I'll use my new and very special bow to take one in the open fields. Now, if you prefer to wax poetic over this sport, go right ahead, but I'm fast becoming a student of RymanCat, haha!

My standard for my Hill style bows if it shot faster at the same draw weight and length as my Bear takedown with a matching poundage limb. Eventually I had longbows from 75pounds down to 41 pounds that chronoed faster than all of my Bear limbs and I parted company with the whole works. I was tired of lugging that clumsy heavy thing around anyway. But really, that was my standard as I reduced my longbow weights from 75 to 96 pounds to all of them 75 and under. That same standard may not work for a 28" draw and up. That was drawing all bows to 26.5" and weighing all of the bows at 26.5".

Joe, I could tell you about a buck that I shot with a Florida Super K, but the twenty yards and under police would string me up by my toes. Let's just say I gave it a 6 foot lead and he ran into the arrow. My record on shoot quarters out of the air that were tossed across my 4'by 6', with tosser hiding behind a sheet of 3/4" plywood about 7' to the side and me from 10 to 12 yards back was 4 out of 6 with that same super K. My record on pennys is 6 out of 10 with a longbow of my own tiller. Oddly, I never hit a single coin with a Bear takedown. Idid shoot a bunch of hand tossed clay pigeons with one. One of those red hand tossers was used, I hand a good tosser that gave a nice consistent distance and curving to left arc. It takes a lot of talent to be able to toss a coin or clay pigeon exactly into the flight path of an on coming arrow.

hey, I don't mind if you use my handle, rather than 'certain person'. I am certain the cat lady across the street has the 'cat of cats', one of those 14 cats certainly must be the 'cat of cats'. I have come to the conclusion that cat people don't like each other. I have been shooting bows as long as I can remember. The only trad bows that ever broke were Bear takedowns. I had two different compounds one year, they both broke, one in the grip and the other the wheels cracked. I found what I really didn't like about compounds. They were heavy and they were difficult to throw very far. Bear takedowns were easier, thanks to the unique take down system, I could throw them them one piece at a time, much easier on the old throwing arm.

Backcountry, you could be right about him already shooting it. No, MT won't get to shoot it and probably doesn't want to. You know, this kinda reminds me of Y-2- K. All the anticipation, all the dread, all the suspense. One second pass midnight and nothing changed. One second after he shoots this hardware laden bow the Holy Grail will still be his Super Bow.

Frisky, I noticed 3-Rivers has the latch repair kits for $ 40 ( repairs one latch). If you decide to keep the bow you should probably order 1/2 doz.

I haven't shot the bow yet, but a warming trend starts tomorrow. Right now, we're at zero degrees. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to start my car and get it out of the garage so I can shoot. A word on the Grail- The sliver of glass just came loose again, so I glued it back down. It's not a fatal flaw and I don't expect any additional problems. I really like hunting with the Drake, but I think this new super bow will be superior. I'll get a cleaner release with little effort. The tips are smaller (thinner) than they look in a digital photo, so I think the bow will be fast. Milk Man believes these bows are a little on the loud side, but I'm an expert at quieting Bear bows and this one should easily be made whisper quiet. I just have a feeling this particular bow will be the greatest of my bows. Limb fit is buttery smooth. No flaws to be seen. The bow has good riser weight to help with keeping it steady on the shot. Overall, it appears to be the perfect bow! It's no wonder Fred Bear's bows became the standard all others aspire to! The West Coast bowyers are all upset, because Bear was a superior thinker.

No, it's been too cold in Minnesota for him to go out and shoot; he knows that Florida bow won't stand up to serious winter weather.

He's hibernated with the groundhogs!

DDear Mr. legend,

Early on in this thread I caught that you are planning on refinishing or getting refinished, The Grail. I am very interested in this, as refinishing is a big hobby for me and I too have a deep appreciation for The Grail.

Are you planning on doing it? Are you going to have somebody else do it? I, unlike yourself, I am a high-gloss fan. However, I just did some touch up work on a widow and ended up using steel wool to give it’s original high gloss a burnished look. Came out very cool! Liked it better than the usual satin or matte finish is one usually sees on bows.

If possible, please post pics of you are refinishing process for The Grail!

PS, Congrats on a nice a riser! Just too bad it’s not actually turquoise…

PPS, What’s the deal with the lifting glass!!! Where? How much? I need to know so I can sleep tonight!

Yes, the Grail needs a re-finish. When I take it out in wet conditions, moisture gets under the old Dutchboy clear coat. The clear is worn nearly off the grip and in many spots all over the bow. Though I like the satin on my new Bear and my 95' Howatt Hunter, I want to stay with gloss for the Grail. My plan is to remove every speck of clear coat left on the bow and Loc Tite the glass splinter that lifted along the edge of the upper limb. It's about 3" long and a couple mm wide. Very thin. I glued it with regular super glue, and it lasted a year. A better gluing should take care of the problem. I haven't decided on a clear coat, but I have something in mind nobody here has mentioned using. Properly applied, it should look great! This will seal the wood and I'm confident the Grail will last a lifetime!

Frisky, some of us tried to tell you to use 420 when that splinter first appeared. So what did you use, Hard as Nails fingernail polish?

Anyway, Kerry Crookedstix has suggested that the best thing about getting your getting the SuperBow is that it might give the Grail a little more time before it totally craps out on you. Unfortunately, it appears that the SuperBow didn't get there soon enough.

While if it was me, I would have already shot the new bow. But you might as well wait 'til Groundhog Day now. That seems more fitting, for some reason.

From: Frisky
Date: 17-Jan-18

Backcountry- I know bows, and I know a fatal flaw when I see one. This is a non-fatal splinter along the edge. In fact, I could have just broke it off and glued it back in place. It's very shallow, less than a mm deep, and narrow. It's just not a problem and doesn't need wicking glue.

Joe

From: crookedstix

The Grail itself is a "non-fatal splinter," if you ask me, but that's neither here nor there. The matter at hand is this new bow--to quote the Wizard of Oz, this "clinking, clanking, clattering collection of calligenous metal" that we are all waiting for (gag)"Mr. Legend" to actually shoot, and pass judgment on.

This whole Blood Moon business gives Frisky a convenient, built-in excuse: If he sprays his arrows all over the target, he can just say that it was too dark for proper shooting...no harm done. But, if he actually hits somewhere near the center, then I fear we'll be hearing about it for a long time. I'm hoping for a Minnesota blizzard on the 31st.

Joe might actually be better off taking his bow across the border, into Wisconsin. There's a church near Green Bay where he can get it properly blessed in the name of St. Hubert.

"I just have a feeling this particular bow will be the greatest of my bows." - I'm pretty sure we ALL have the feeling your new bow will be self proclaimed as the "greatest". I mean, what are the chances you would poo-poo ANY bow of yours?

It took you 2 months to string The Grail, and then another 2 months to work up the courage to shoot it. You then said it was very finicky and hard to shoot well. It immediately lifted a splinter - and yet, you had NO problem proclaiming it to be the greatest. lol - You truly are The Legend. Keep'em coming.

From: Frisky
Date: 17-Jan-18

First off, I had to find the right stringer for the Grail. My stringers didn't fit, and I always use a stringer. Once I had a stringer, I quickly and easily strung the bow. Look at how fast I was to string the Bear. Once strung, I shot it right away. If I hadn't listened to old Skookum, I'd have had the Grail shooting well within 10 minutes. I finally realized these old guys don't know squat, raised the brace height to 7.5", and had myself a bow! It took two years for the splinter to lift. It was a minor deal. One thing I finally realized is I'm the King of Knowledge in this sport! There's no sense reading books or taking the advice of all these so-called legends, when I'm the true, one and only, living legend. I know bows best and know exactly what to do to keep them operating smoothly. You never hear me talking about bare-shafting, string-walking, point on and all that crap. I talk about what's important: brace height, elevated rests and learning to disappear in plain sight. Even Byron becoming the arrow is inferior to disappearing in plain sight. It won't be long and I'll be writing THE book on bowhunting!

I am not sure if we are seeing seasonal depression or seasonal delusion here. You may want to ugly up that Grail even further by adding a bit of serving to that sliver.

From: Backcountry

Groundhog Day was a movie about a guy who just couldn't get over himself...kept making the same mistakes over and over until be finally "got it" and straightened out.

Not saying that's the case here but still, there sure seems to be some corollaries. It would be most appropriate if this turned out to be Frisky's Groundhog Day bow!

Just two more weeks until the big event!

There's actually a chance that Frisky may see the eclipse; it starts just before 5 AM on January 31st in his part of the world...which is when he's usually just wrapping up another big night of posting his usual drivel to the 'Wall.

However, the best view in the lower 48 states of the "blood" portion of the eclipse will be from Skookum's part of the world, in extreme NW Washington.

For those on the East Coast unable to see the whole event, I've prepared an artist's conception of Frisky's Big Moment. With gravity's help, his new bow should be able to reach the target of the ground.

I might hold a coronation for this King of Bows on Groundhog Day. I have the target to get the job done.

Dear Mr. Legend (again),

Sounds like you have a legit plan for restoring The Grail. Now I can sleep well again -almost. You’re holdin yer cards close about the finish and that’s cool, just PLEASE, for The Grails sake, make sure it’s a quality finish and test it out on a lesser bow (which, as we’ve repeatedly heard from you, all are) first!

And show us pics! I’d love to see some close-ups of that riser and the blue glass before, during and after finishing! :-)

J.

From: Frisky

Yes, I'll post the ultimate Grail re-finish thread. I'm thinking of changing my mind on the clear coat and going with the original Dutchboy, as that's what Skookum likes best.

Crookedstix that moon shot will be Frisky ground blind when shooting the cow jumping over the moon.

Frisky would need to shoot from an old grain elevator to pull off that moon shot as in the pic. For safety concerns people should stand at least 80 or 90 yards back from the grain elevator.

Joe--

The Wiccans have some very useful information available online, if you're looking for some useful spells to cast on that bow. If you start rounding up the necessary crystals and pentagrams now, and practicing your Latin, you'll be all set come the Blood Moon.

From: Frisky
Date: 18-Jan-18

LA is once again showing a total lack of patience. All of his life, he had to have his way NOW!

Iwander- That feather rest observation interests me. Yesterday, I was discussing making feathers rests for my bows. I told MT I thought goose feather rests might be a bit loud, compared to turkey, but would be more or less waterproof. I have everything needed to put either one, goose or turkey, together and might do it. The goose feathers are slicker than turkey and might make a great rest.

Joe

From: Frisky
Date: 18-Jan-18

I see those Wiccans use quartz crystal to enhance objects, and people laughed at me for adding quartz to my arrows! When we hunt, we pay close attention to the wind but fail to recognize the energy flows around us. It's that energy, even more than the wind, that can cause us to"disappear in plain sight" and not be seen or noticed by deer. That same energy, flowing through your arrow, can actually guide it to the target. Where is the greatest energy concentration in a deer? It's in the heart. Where did my last arrow hit the deer? Through the heart.

Joe

Rug rest and leather side plate on all of my hunting bows. Has served me well! But I don't use that crap that Bear installs. My rugs are from 1/4" nap Mohair WOOSTER paint rollers. It's more like the original stuff they used back in the day.

From: dean
Date: 18-Jan-18

Years ago a cute sweet young gal gave me some long crystals with copper wire that she tightly wrapped around them, because she saw that I was in pain. Could have been a good witch. She stopped by a couple of times while she was in the area to show me how to use them and see how I was doing. She called it orgone energy. It is not magic, I can feel orgone pressure. You can test yourself. Breath on your finger tips to raise the humidity level, then with your fingers comfortably relaxed and straight, bring your finger tips together, but do let them touch. If you can feel them in close proximity, you are feeling nerve energy, orgone energy feels very similar.

From: Matt Ewing
Date: 19-Jan-18

Rocks aren't going to make this bow "cool". Start working that hackberry limb. Try to salvage your legendary status! Concerned students are waiting. Mainstream bows already have there "legends". So please keep looking I am convinced the true grail does not have contraptions on it. Think about that! It won't need them as it will send an arrow to the energy. Won't it know what direction to take you? A compass? Mouse traps? ) <<<< This is the shape of the grail.

From: Fisher Cat
Date: 19-Jan-18

Joe,

I think you've been using too much CRYSTAL METHod and it's bringing your greatness into question. Your reliance on moon phases for luck is pure "lunacy" too. We expect really relevant and useful information from you, like the benefits of staring at the sun, out of body experiences for scouting game, etc. I hope this plain new bow will get you back on track. - John

From: Frisky
Date: 19-Jan-18

I'd like to take a minute to discuss the compass. The compass was Fred Bear's favorite accessory. Fred hunted in wilderness areas and needed a compass. To place it on the bow was good thinking. Even today one can get turned around and a quick check with the compass can be reassuring or even get you out of a serious jam. I believe every bow should have a compass.
