Would like to know if there's anyone who knows any history on the bow or bowyer. I don't have so I'll post all the pics I have.

A friend has the bow and knows absolutely nothing about archery. They asked me for info and all I could tell them was it is a selfbow by a local bowyer. So I thought I'd see if anyone here had any knowledge it or it's maker.

Doesn't look like a selfbow?

No idea grizz, but It's an interesting looking bow.

From: grizz

Ok. It's a wood bow with a laminated handle and no shelf. So for lack of a better term I called it a self bow. If I wasn't to sick to leave the house, I would've drove to their house and looked at it and took better pics. I figure it's a long shot but if anyone has any constructive knowledge please let me know.

That's alright Mike, I really wasn't sure what to call it. Maybe when I get over the crud I'll get over there and look at it.

grizz, I did a very quick Google search, using "Anderson, Smithville, OK", and a name and phone number came up in a White Pages listing. It is NOT for "E.G.Anderson", but with a population of 113 in 2010, there's a strong chance the name I found might be a relative. Want me to "PM" you the details?

I went ahead and PM'd you!

Looks like an Osage Orange self bow to me from the limited photo views.

I hunt just a little ways from Smithville use to only have a gas station and sometimes a restaurant. Now it has both and a Dollar Store. Very small town, occasionally in the early 90’s we’d run across a guy in the woods who would be camped out hunting and making self bows. He was pretty old at the time, he may have knew the bowyer but who knows now your guess is as good as mine. I will ask some family members who grew up there if they know a Mr. Anderson.

I live about 30 miles from Smithville. I have a contact number on an Anderson in Smithville, I'd say chances are good they may know something.

If you can't learn something about stick bows here you really do not need to know it. That is the very best feature of this site.

He left The sapwood on the Osage and here I thought that was a new concept

Have you learned anything about the bow grizz? Hope you're feeling better, too.

Wheres George he knows everything about old bows he's good on that stuff.

Maybe Frisky knows also? Wait till he gets back from dollar store he's picking up old outdated tuna for his fur family.LOL

I don't know who he is. The bow has to be 30 plus years old. It was quite popular in the day to have your own stickers made, like you see on yours. I ran across and very old Grumley styled bow that wasn't from Nels. It had a sticker on it just like yours, cant remember what it said, but it wasn't a commercial type sticker. It was just a proud bowyer who wanted his own sticker. Perhaps this situation is the same.

I spoke with the only Anderson listed in Smithville and they have no knowledge of E. G. Anderson in the Smithville area. So, it's still a mystery.

Horseapple hasn't heard the name before

According to the 1940 census, there was an 18 year old named E G Anderson living with parents in Hulbert, Oklahoma, about 150 miles north of Smithville. His name was actually listed as E G, so that's probably what he went by. Don't know if it's the same guy.

Grizz: DARN! I was hoping that info I passed along might lead to something. I'll peruse a little more; maybe see what else is out there...

Here's an "E. G. Anderson", dated '22 from somewhere (??!), who seems to be a prominent Embryonic Scientist ("Embryo Project Encyclopedia, 1922"). From what town or school? Haven't a clue.

But, looking at the quality and style of the decal, my guess was a 1940s decal. This gent shown could be in his 50s in the 1940s. Quite a longshot, but...he could have enjoyed Bowyer-ing as a respite from his scientific "day job".

As I said, quite a longshot. Just a longshot lead.

But, Archers are known for longshots.

HARRY CARRY...shameless pun. Longshots...love it!

Speaking of longshots, in the'30s, there were several young engineers involved with flight archery. Also, a rocket scientist involved with archery in general. (full working recurve). bvd

Buster, maybe you are referring to Clarence Hickman, "the father of scientific archery." He was into rockets and all kinds of things.

Dhanu, yes I am. He developed the first portable chronograph and is in the Archery Hall of Fame. bvd

So I talked with a good friend and she told me she thought it could have been her dad’s trapping buddy Grady. He owned the mountain country store there. He was born in 1931 and died in 2010. Also another possibility is an Emmit Anderson that was born in 1889. No recollection of archery being a real big deal to Grady by her, so it could have been his dad, not sure Emmit was kin or not but very likely as they are all buried in the same cemetery, it is a small community.

From: Chemsolder1
Date: 21-Dec-17

Emmitt was Grady’s Dad. Not sure but I would just about bet his middle name is Grady.

Good try Randy, but around here, an embryonic researcher is just a chicken farmer. ;^)

Grizz, when I try to do a "background check", there's a good chance that some of the info I recover is not 100% related to the actual person of interest. However, often times, that tidbit found leads to something interesting.

However: I cannot stop laughing about what you just wrote!!!

I really hope the "Power Of The Leatherwall" gets this bow, and bowyer, mystery solved. Each post is kind of like the next episode...."Tune in tomorrow to see if E.G. was a chicken farmer, a scientist, or just a mad bowman from Oaky"....
