This morning at our little Christian church I could not remember the name of one of you who asked for prayer, so when we had requests for prayer I explained my predicament and our pastor advised us to include all of Leatherwall in our prayer service. I explained that a lot of our trad family are up in years or have family members with issues. As our pastor said, God knows our members and praying for Leatherwall will bless all of us, but especially those who are hurting. Leatherwall is now on our prayer list.

Dauid, prayers to the Lord does not mean that he always gives us what we want.
I know there's power in prayer. Sometimes he says no, I know this first hand, but often times he uses doctors or miracles.
I know I'm thankful for the prayers of others.

I don't want to offend my religious friends, so I won't comment more. I'd rather not have religious discussions on an archery site and many others may feel the same way. I'm sure we all do what we think gives the best chance for a favorable outcome.

Not a discussion David, and nothing to do with religion, just faith and asking for a blessing. Gifted with free will we can accept or reject it. As a traditional archer, I rely a lot on faith when I let an arrow go at a deer as I am using only my brain God gave me. Plus, how can one sit in the woods on a silent snowy evening with a stick and sting in your lap, look around you, and not marvel? My wife an I sat together last night with her hoping to get a deer. I was just a spectator. It started to snow and with us way up in a cut, hiding in a little thicket, we could actually hear the snow fall. Another blessing.

Then David A. don't open threads that obviously are asking for prayer if they offend you. I have experienced many answers to prayer in my own life, family life, and ministry and have seen the Lord do amazing things. But as said above, God doesn't always give us what we want. "If we ask anything ACCORDING TO HIS WILL we know that He hears us, and if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions we have asked of Him" I John 5:14-15.
Some say answers to prayer are "coincidences". I recently read a quote from a bishop from the past--"When I pray, coincidences happen. When I don't, they don't."

Amen prayer is the direct link to the Lord! He wants us to ask we should never fear asking for individuals or blanket prayers because the wings of angles spread out and cover us at all. There's many who don't ask that are fearful to call attention to themselves that need prayers and thoughts and hopes from us all.
Lord watch over us all we need your protection every one of us we are in uncertain times and others are out there like roaring lions trying to pull us down as well as discredit us.
You alone silence them and fight our battles though they rage on like the winds that blow so freely.
Amen

I will comment on that, this thread was not asking for prayers, from the subject line it posed the topic of prayers which seemed to be asking for opinions vs. asking for prayers for particular person. I courteously gave my opinion, and I respect those who are religious - at least those who are not killing others of a different religion.

Yes, the title seemed to pose a query, but a title can mean many different things. I have no objection to prayer as affirmation of positive living. I sort of wonder about it as a wish list type of thing...so I researched it a little and there seems to be little or no correlation with health improvement. Some studies even showed a negative correlation. Perhaps the explanation in those cases is that the control group which didn't pray, pursued other avenues more diligently such as pursuing different treatments, better doctors, etc.
Perhaps somewhat analogous as to the best course of action when your car breaks down and your survival is at risk.

Here's two scenes from a "don't let go movie". At the end, who is the astronaut whispering "thank you" to? A god, or her rational co-astronaunt who taught her to never ever give up on being in charge of your survival no matter how bad the odds. Did mankind emerge out of humble beginnings because of direction by a god or by our own never give up efforts? It's been a long journey, step by step and now here we are...

Who doesn't need prayer now and then? I know I do, and I feel a sense of comfort when I have those conversations.
One of the greatest gifts given to mankind is that of free will. Unfortunately, it's often used poorly. If you're a believer (I am) fine. If not, your choice. Ultimately, our questions will be answered.
I take no offense to the prayer requests posted here. And while I've never done so personally, I offer in the name of the needy.
I agree God doesn't necessarily give us what we want, but I feel he does to what we need.
I've experienced enough in my life to not doubt.

"free gift of salvation" - at the low price of one's critical faculties/rationality. It's non negotiable. My rationality is not for ransom. Relevant to ill health, or any life threatening circumstances, it is the last thing I would want to surrender.
Arguably our brains evolved in large part for precisely this function. To overcome dire circumstances. We are here today as survivors of a long and largely forgotten history of such challenges stretching back to when our distant ancestors struggled from water to mud to higher ground...

Religion itself has also evolved into thousands of forms and indeed may increase survivability in dire circumstances such as by adding group cohesion, reducing stress, etc....so I certainly do not argue religion is necessarily just about power and money as many do.

David, we are free to believe what we choose. I dont believe in pushing any faith on anyone. But sadly those that choose to to believe will face the truth one day.
Honestly, I dont have enough faith to believe in evolution, especially we we look at how delicate and precise, complex the creation is. I hope you have a safe and successful rest of the season, I plan on doing sone huntingthis month.

Tree, that attitude is so similar to ISIS. They absolutely know they're right and everyone else should believe their book. Thank goodness for rationalism, albeit always under attack from one sect or another.

Davis, you choose not to believe...that's sad but it is your choice. I simply could not believe in evolution or a random chance theory. Real science verifies a creator ,imo. We humans are the only creation of God's design that does not function as he created us to. Anyway, I will leave the thread to it's OP original intent.
Stay safe and happy hunting.

A little girl was born to a friend of mine. Her name is Arielle. She was born with a very aggressive brain tumor. The doctors tried six times to remove it at Boston's Childrens Hospital, but they were unsuccessful and told Liz, my teaching colleague that Arielle had one month to live. All the churches up here were holding prayer services for Arielle. They did an MRI to monitor the tumors growth and called Liz and Phil in for the results. Liz sat there distraught and the doctors told her and Phil to start saving for college. Liz was puzzled and thought they were joking when the head surgeon told them, "the tumor is gone. We have no explanation." "Call it a miracle, but every so often this happens." Arielle is now a very active healthy 6 year old. Go on Google and type in Arielle's Song, Bob Lord, and you will hear the song I wrote and performed for Arielle, along with the story of her miracle. I choose to believe and definitely believe in prayer and will continue to do so, because we all need it. Being an instinctive shooter involves a lot of prayer sometimes.

ISIS is founded on a religion. Science is founded on facts. The fact is evolution is based on natural selection, which is the opposite of chance. In the future, omit this error from your argument and it won't be so obvious you don't understand evolution.
Really, your fall back position should be "ok, evolution occurs" but God is directing it." That would be a lot harder to argue against. For starters, it would shift the debate from evolution which is proven, to something which is difficult to prove or disprove. Then, you can just declare it's a matter of faith and both sides would perhaps respect each other more.
Arguing evolution doesn't occur is just flat earth thinking in the 21st Century. Even the Catholic Church has thrown in the towel and acknowledges evolutionary creation and specifically states in various Catholic revisions that beings evolve.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_and_the_Catholic_Church
Catholics and other denominations are of course free to believe whatever they want, but really this debate is no the big deal it was when Darwin wrote the Origin of Species. It's over for all practical purposes.

Certainly, some of us think prayer is magic...pray in order to get something. That may be more popular for some white churches, whereas black churches seem to put more energy into giving thanks.
Further, there's a difference between belief and faith...some Christian churches make that distinction.
As a matter of fact, religion isn't central to faith, or even to belief for many.
Getting isn't the goal of prayer for everybody.
