I'm wanting to order a forward handle longbow but don't know much about these bows. What are some of the better ones? I've been looking at the McBroom bows website. Anyhow, any help would be appreciated.

Can't do better than the Northern Mist Whisper.

Apache by Roy Hall of Navajo bows. I have two that are my personal bows and I've sold several.

From: wannabe

Those Kramer bows look nice. Pretty sure that's the cheapest I've seen so far too. I couldn't get the website for Navajo bows to come up. Thanks guys

Typo. Ramer by Steve at northern mist. Kramer didn't make a forward handle that I know about. Rooty

Kramer made the Hill reverse. I gave a dandy to a newby a few years back.

From: alex1987

Kramer had his own line of bows and they had a great two piece and forward handle

JD Berry seems to be an extremely popular forward handle type.

If you find the right Elburg Jaguar, or mid grip, they are better than any others I have used, but normally the weight is higher than people want today:

I would highly recommend a JDBerry; Morningstar, Northstar, or Taipan, if you can find one.

Another vote for one of James Berry' bows.

I like my Northern Mist Whisper.

If you are willing to consider a hybrid R/D type: I don't know anything about them, but there is a guy here in NE that makes them. Heartland Archery pulse and surge I believe. Worth a look maybe?

Good to know Dean. I have one Lee left

I have a JD Berry Morningstar. It is an awesome bow and I seem to shoot the forward handle bow a little better than the standard ASL handle.

From: wannabe
Date: 07-Oct-17

Thanks guys. Looks like it'll be a Kramer or northern mist. I'd like to have one of the JD berry bows but they seem a little hard to come by.

From: dean
Date: 07-Oct-17

he couldn't resist putting a bit of shape into the Razorback grips. Everyone that I handled had a bit palming in the locator grip. I also liked roundness of the limbs. Whether or not it made them shoot any better or worse, don't know, but that stave like feel has something to it.

Another vote for an Elburg if you can find one. Here is a pic of the riser of an Elburg Cherokee Flatbow I used to own. Very stable in the hand. For bowyers currently making them, I think the Northern Mist Whisper and Ramer would be my choice. Best of luck to you in your search.

I have a JD Berry, Northern Mist and Howard Hill forward handle longbows and have taken game with each; however, I’m partial to my Berry and Northern Mist.

Well, James is at it again. About 6 months ago, James told me that he was going to stop building the Morningstar and the Northstar and wanted to concentrate on his other ASLs. But if you know him, his brain is always working on the next project. I spoke with him this morning at catch up, and low and behold found out what he was up too. He’s in the process as I type this, of making a new model. It’s a forward handle ALS with a glassed over grip similar to his “Taipan”. To bad he’s already cut the limbs for a 68” bow, or I’d be knocking his door down to be the first to shoot. By the way it going to called “Valor” after he beloved Great Dane that he lost a couple of months ago. I think James has a secret plan to make me spend more money

From: mgmicky
Date: 08-Oct-17

That’s great news Crispin. I have a Taipan that looks and shoots great, but for some reason I enjoy shooting the MS better. The Valor sounds like a winner

From: ga bowhunter
Date: 08-Oct-17

Crispin great photos, the title says forward handles but most posts are for reverse handle Hill styles there are many more options for forward handle bows vs reverse handle bows where the main lamenations go thru belly of the grip

Thanks everybody

From: Bowlim

I thought forward and reverse were just different names for the same thing. I can see the distinction, though a forward handle meaning one that has the handle block on the back of the bow would then be a bit of a misnomer since the handle in any case includes the stack, and it is in reverse, if anything. So I am not sure I buy the terminology, but it is good to know what it is.

It is funny that we have anterior, forward/reverse, and neutral handle position on glass bows, given that there is only one position on actual long bows.

From: ModernLongbow

I have a valor in the works. Should be in my hands very soon. James is working on it now.

From: dean
Date: 02-Nov-17

My right shooting son cannot shoot my Morningstar, but declared the Nothern Mist Whisper to be the most accurate and forgiving bow that he had ever shot. Then I took out my Sunset Hill dual shooter and he changed his mind some. I think if one is available the Northern Mist can shoot better than anyone can shoot, but that goes for a lot of bows. Including the five bows that I have.

Kramer's takedown system is similar in shape to the pearson takedown system. Although I would say its slightly bigger...
