Here in Northeast Penna. it has been unseasonably warm for this time of year and very dry as well. Evening sits have been very tough with the gnats and mosquitos swarming around all the time. It is also so warm it is tempting to doze off, but luckily I am hunting from a folding stool on the ground and if that happens I won't have far to fall. When I get home I always strip down and do a thorough search for ticks in front of a mirror ( that's not a pretty site ). So far the only tick I have found was on my pant leg Monday evening. All in all it is still great for this 72 year old bowhunter to be out and enjoying this wonderful heritage of ours. I only hope that one of my grandsons will pick up the interest, my son is sort of into it, but not like I would like to see him. This year I am hunting with a Black Widow PSA-V, 53# and using Carbon Express Traditional shafts that I crested & fletched myself ( see photo ). Best of luck to all and hopefully we will get some rain and cooler weather in this part of the state.

Zero ticks so far here in Michigan. We have been running several degrees above normal. Forecast is for temps to drop next week. The long walk to the stands and back are rough on my knees but I keep trying to go. Good luck with the gnats and skeeters, and stay in the woods!

It is frustrating. I agree. I will get out Friday night. Just got my new camera arm. Going to try to film a KILL this time. Ive tried so many times and cent keep em in frame.

for this reason I have not even been out yet. Got warm rain last night. Might hunt at Samson state Park this weekend, going camping there. Gonna look for the monster white buck I saw in velvet already sprouting 10 points back in June (he's not available to hunt unless he got out of the fence). I've not seen a single tick this fall yet even on the dogs. It is supposed to be fairly warm, but also kind of wet this weekend. May be a good hunt coming.

Haven't been out since the first day. We need rain and it looks like Monday and Tuesday will be the first time for some wetness. Been cleaning up around the house; flower beds, trimming fruit trees and a few lilacs next to the road. Fixing the bird feeders, and making sure the chickens are ready for winter. They seem pretty ambivalent about the whole process though. Got the fields mowed at the farm and the cabin in fine fettle so all is pretty well set now. None of my kids or grandkids hunt either...so I suspect I may be the last of the Mohicans in our immediate family.

Actually, I just haven't been in the mood for hunting, and I keep thinking about gutting, dragging and getting it taken care of quickly in this warm weather. Nowadays I don't do much of anything quickly. But I know it will only take a cool down to get me to the woods for anything but stumping. I'm sure I would be eternally confused if I lived in Florida or other southern state were it really doesn't get much below forty....at least normally. Weather is what weather is so we just endeavor to persevere 8^)). Have a safe season.

Calvin, I will be in the Adirondacks Saturday if you want to join me..the season in the North is just too short. The warmth isn't helping any, that's for sure.

Was out for a little bit came in early couldn't. Stand the Knats left my thermacell in the truck DUH!!

From: Pa Steve
Date: 05-Oct-17

It is warm but you can't get these days back, so I hunt as much as I can. Found one tick so far. Had a bee buzzing around for a while the other day. Guess my thermacell doesn't really work for bees.

Was a bit warm this morning and now up into the 80s, getting muggy and the darn wind is backwards. Probably will just stay in this afternoon with the wind swirling and being humid and all. Dang

Vacation starts tomorrow, but instead of chasing critters, I'll be working on the wife's car. She hit a buck evening before last and her car is out of commission.

We almost got rain today but it went just south of us.

From: shade mt

Been a little cooler in the mornings this week. Mon morning some folks had frost, I had 34 here at the house, I'm sure parts of North Central PA probably seen temps in the 20's in the morning ? But its been warm in the afternoon yes.

We got our 1st measurable rain in 3 weeks here last night. It didn’t do much but every little bit helps. It’s still warm though

More rain coming too. If the rain continues eventually it will turn to snow? LOL

Been out a couple of times this year during early seasons in PA and VA. The temperature was in the 80's in both places. Just doesn't feel quite right. Will be 80 degrees again in VA thus weekend for the opener. Anxiously awaiting the first freeze so it will actually feel like deer season.

wet wet wet here in iowa this week which is good as we have been in a drought all year. we have had south east wind most of the fall so far as another hurricane is coming to the gulf coast. still i saw 3 deer and about 10 turkeys tuesday evening. i know one thing my old pearson bph - 52 is ready to rock and roll! best shooting short bow i've shot. at 75 years young i'm still thrilled to be in the woods...just don't climb trees like i used to.. which is fine! you all have a great deer hunt this fall and GOD BLESS!

From: Will tell
Date: 06-Oct-17

It's too hot to kill deer. I've been passing up does due to the heat. Not going to be much better next week.

From: Stew
Date: 06-Oct-17

I really like 60 degrees for the morning hunts so far. I usually stay out till 8:30. Haven't seen a tick or mosquito yet. Evenings are way to warm for me, especially if you have a marginal shot. There is plenty of time left here in 2B(11-25-17). The deer seem to be bedding way before daybreak.

From: oldrecurveman
Date: 08-Oct-17

Temps back around 80 again this afternoon and very humid, but we are expecting rain tonight and tomorrow ( remnants of hurricane NATE ). Put a ladder stand up in back yard today for practicing in anticipation of Indiana bowhunt in 2 1/2 weeks. I don't have any up in the woods this year, but my son & I will be hunting out of them in Indiana so need to get accustomed to shooting from the elevation. We will be hunting with Bushy Creek Outfitters in Indiana and hopefully will get some shooting out there. Later in the week our weather should start getting back to more normal for this time of year.

Same here in NW Jersey. Amazingly though, not a single tic. Hard to fathom after the onslaught this spring.

A little cooler this morning but still very humid. Can't wait for those high 30s and low 40s mornings and evenings.

Have my buck but another doe won't go to waste. Luckily here in NJ we have a permit archery season starting around Nov. 1st so have another chance at a buck during the rut.

Good luck to you guys.

Scott (Caracajou), Sorry, just now saw your post. Thanks for the invite. How did you do? I have not ready any further in this thread just in case you posted something already, my apologies for not seeing yours before. We went to Samson State Park camping last weekend. I didn't hunt, and it rained a good part of the time. This weekend we are going to the Inlet area, and into Moose River Plains. I'm hunting but I also realize muzz starts up there this weekend, so either that will spell doom for any undisturbed deer-situations, or it will help move them around some and maybe into my lap, who knows? It would be ideal if there were be few or no muzz hunters, but I'll bet there will be some around. Just glad to be going no matter what happens. Hope you did well Scott. TK

Middle of October in southern Ontario, and it's 70 degrees out at 8am...70 degrees! Last time my son and I sat our stands, we came back with lumps all over our faces...muggy, warm, and mosquito infested...no fun at all. Will wait for colder weather, but our season is already half over before the shotgun week starts. C'mon cold!

Great day in the woods! I didn't even have them pesky deer bothering me at all!

Yep nice to have the guns out of the woods and the new bear season coming soon.

Hunted from my favorite tree stand... just so happens the tree is on the ground. :)

Monkeyball we all know the Intelligence of our Game Commission for the most part..... $$$$$$$$$$$. Ok back to the thread cooler weather is certainly on it's way as is my vacation 3 days off this week then the last 2 weeks off. Hoping to see the big boys on there feet. Good luck.

Craig I had my flintlock out all week. Well, the last two times. I never shot one with my flintlock and good ol patched roundball. Bennett got a shot...I almost shot one yesterday in the shade but it was a risky shot and I didn't shoot. Very few shots around me. I only saw one deer yesterday, and hunted 7.5 hrs yesterday.

I have bear pictures on today the 17th... Three bear. So I'll be hitting it hard next week.

From: ShadeHaven
Date: 22-Oct-17

Sorry Bennett was to be never. I hate this phone and it's auto correct. I could start a thread on the stupidity of my comments with this auto correct.

We haven't had a regular licenese increase since 1998, and we are down nearly 200,000 hunters in Pa. since the mid 90's. So where do you think all of this money is coming from that the PGC has to use. They get very little from the General Fund and have to nearly beg for that. . Without the PGC, we wouldn't have any opportunity to even hunt deer...or anything. They are not even close over-funded, but they are the first to get the brunt of sarcasm from people who should know better.

Okay Craig....cooling down this week .... expectations are high..as temp gets lower.....news at 11.

Here is good old 2B Westmoreland County. I have been out a ton. Been seeing a ton of deer late. Cold front moved in early this week and bucks were moving. Then Friday’s warm 72 degrees messed it up! I was out this morning and even stalked in the rain....NOTHING. I did not even spook anything! I knew I should not have passed on the early doe shots! ~WOJO

If you would have asked me in July what days you planning to hunt this year I would hand said well I'm definitely going Monday October 30 for deer and bear.... Well when there is forecasted 46mph gusts at 1pm. Screw that. Building bows today, hunting tomorrow!

Just to the north of you guys, getting heavy rain all day and night yesterday and last night, now its blowing hard too and still raining. And colder. This coming weekend is my time to be out. I am praying for the time to be blessed no matter what outcome. Game on!

We've had a south / southeast / southwest wind about the whole season so far, usually from the west-ish..

From: Tom McCool

Out in the high winds now (Monday). Rain stopped. Missed a turkey at 15 yards and saw a spike broadside at 25. Damn antler restrictions! LOL!

From: fishin coyote
Date: 30-Oct-17

Although it was breezy the deer were moving. Saw 9 this morning 5 doe, 3 bucks and 1 unknown. Missed one of the does. 2of the bucks were little guys and the other was a big gnarly 10 who was locked down on a doe. They bedded down about 60 yds from me for 2-3 hrs.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Gonna hit the woods tomorrow. No rain and little wind expected and the game lands #48 is calling. Weather is still mild here, into the 50's tomorrow, but that makes for some pleasant days skulking around the old tram roads and deer paths.

From: ShadeHaven
Date: 01-Nov-17

I took off work and sat dark to dark yesterday. Only thing I saw was a buck and two doe. It was incredible tho. Crashing through the laurel grunting like mad. The does came right to me at ten yards. Couldn't get a shot through the thick. Got video of it. The buck was a stud. Too bad I'm tagged for a buck. Tome to get ball to work. Until Saturday!
