I love build-a-longs. I enjoy seeing you waller's talent and seeing how you guys build.
So here goes a new one for me.
Ive been thinking for 2 months or so about how I want to build a new form. I never handled a shrew or Big Jim Thunderchild but I like the design and look of that style bow. So I drew a pattern and looked at it for days, changed it, and finally after a while of looking at it decided its time to make this thing into a form
It will make a 58"-60" bow. Handle forward. Fast shooting.
I glued up a riser this week. Im building this bow out of materials I have already.
Hickory and walnut riser with brown and white glass. Brown and white glass overlays and tips.
I'm going to make quartersawn sycamore veneer limbs over maple or hickory core. Not sure on the core yet.

One thing I should mention, the pieces behind belly will be hickory also. I will be staining sycamore and hickory with walnut aniiline dye. Never dyed before. This will be a test so it's not the first time for me when I build Jim Keller's

I tillered the bottom limb and put some silencers on the string to get a real feel for this bow. I must say I think I just finished a winner. No hand shock. Fast. Best part is it's quiet. I love this bow. I may make a YouTube video on this one.

Yes I need to make a change on the bottom fade, it's not as short as the top, so it made the limb bend a little different.
I drew it to over 30" & no problems

"I will never try to splice a parallel. will just use one long piece in the future, its too hard to keep them joined."
Kennym has a good method of doing it. I DIDN'T use it on the last lay up and had the same gaposis. If he doesn't come on with it I'll do some pics for you. I just did two yesterday but didn't take any pictures. I can take some though if Kenny doesn't jump in. He's probably out hunting.

Yeah, I know, I machined away an inch off each pair trying to get them to stay glued together. Was my first non ASL bow and it's a different process for sure.
My ASL forms have stop.blocks on each end with all the lams cut to fit tight against the blocks which keeps them butted together. I don't bevel them at all, just butt them together. That didn't work with an RD form!
I'll do the pictures later this evening.

Here's what I did. The nails are for illustration, the pins in the lay up will be wood. This was clamped up in alignment and the holes drilled with a #41 drill (.096). Lams are marked as to which end they go on and the layer order.
Kennym s system is more sophisticated. He glues the lams together and his locator pin(s) (I think he uses one) are spring loaded from inside the riser.

You can see in the last picture that the alignment is off the center of the riser by about 1/16" but it won't have a noticeable effect.
