I had a quick opening day afternoon hunt today. I packed Quickly and just grabbed 3 arrows. That's enough right?

I was hunting from a tree saddle....a bunch of turkeys came through. Long story short...I missed twice and then later dropped my last arrow. Oops.

6 arrows next time

I dunno. I carry four arrows-- one blunt and three broadheads. I figure if I miss three times (and, regrettably, I have done that a time or two ), the critter deserves to get away. :>)

just carry one more than you need :>)

My two misses were about 20 minutes apart and I underestimated the range on both by about 5 yards. Shooting through lots of obstructions and odd hills. Turned out to be 30 and 35 yards. Arrows hit right at their feet. At least I never got busted

Then I was adjusting my setup to get ready for end of day and that's when I dropped my last arrow. I was using a slow climbing method. If I had a grappling hook....I'd have been able to pick up that arrow.

Been there !

How about you try taking just one arrow and thats right for the missing reasons the one arrow should force you to bare down.

Think about that one. Reason for only 3 arrows is 3 turkeys.LOL

Not 3 shots. Easier said that done your proving it like we all have , Right.LOL

Scoop, that is a wise sargeant. Never quite understood just carrying three arrows. Stumps, squirrels, roving band of cossacks, aliens.....you need arrows. I think eight or nine is minimum for me.

So easy with a sidekick to carry more. Rooty

I done about anything you boys can dream up! When missing got so bad at one point it was 1 arrow in the woods. I went with and it was that 1 arrow that put it back on track for me that forced me to bare down or I have to go find the arrow and sharpen again and if I missed in tree stand then climb down and more work.LOL

When your shooting a deer your not playing on small game of birds or anything else for fear of spoking the deer.If your after a deer not a hope of other things then you want to limitt your movement and shooting at other things is not the way to do that. LOL

I also have taken with me 2 dozen arrows in Antelope blind and shot that many arrows too on one occasion. LOL

So been through all sort of senarios. I take what my quiver these days holds though and I have a sharpner in pack. LOL

I carry five and a blunt in a Powderhorn side carry, if I'm worried about a Zombie Apocolypse I can strap on a four arrow bow quiver for 10. I usually only do that when Grouse or Ptarmigan are available for camp meat.

Thing is here in TN, we can take 3 antlerless per day and turkeys all through Archery only season. Turkey limit is two. So it is in your best interest to carry lots of arrows. Not to mention squirrels.

I had one Judo with me and passed on lots of squirrels as I didn't want to go to the trouble of cleaning it

I always carry 7.

5 with broadheads, and 2 small game thumpers.

I always have 5 Broadheads in my bow quiver and a Judo. I keep 3 or 4 "coon" arrows with broadheads in my ground blind all the time. One can never have enough ammo!

I liked Jay Massey's thought process. When asked about taking an amount of arrows on his Moose John float he said, about three dozen, including 18 broadhead arrows. Now those are my kind of numbers. 8^). For the most part I've cut down to only eight or nine....or ten or twelve. I think it's a survival mentality. I've only one time needed more than one shell for my rifle when hunting deer, but I carry at least a dozen. I can always leave something else home that don't mean a difference in survivng a couple days in the woods.

Ryman, I don't worry about that. On two different occasions, I've arrowed groundhogs and in less than an hour shot bucks from the very same spot. I've also shot squirrels and deer the same day in the same patch if woods.

I use a back quiver and carry at least 6 broadheads, several Magnus small game heads, and a judo or two.

First time out Bowhunting - EVER. Pulled off the county road onto the farm road, and there were 2 does RIGHT THERE. I pulled over; they ran back into the field. It was just starting to get light, so I dropped the tailgate, grabbed the bow and 1 arrow out of the Quik-ee Quiver and trotted off parallel to where I figured they were headed. 100 yards down, at a gap in the wind-break, there they were, roadside.

Picked one, estimated the range, and shot right over. And there they stood.

They let me ease up to about 10 yards before they bounced off again. Found my arrow and missed again. Twice. At that point, the blades would no longer take any hair off my arm, so I headed back to the ol' Wagoneer...

Now I only carry as many arrows as I have sharp broadheads. Plus a couple of Judos and some blunts.

I use a modified bow quiver that hold 5 comfortably. Lately, I carry 3 BH and 2 Judo. Sometimes, I get the urge to just shoot a stump, so this way I can.

I carry 4 arrows with Bear broadheads. Haven't seen a turkey where I bow hunt in 10 years but there is a season. I don't shoot squirrels or stumps but I enjoy watching them. Good luck.

Bob, If I had hit both of my turkeys, I still had another hour and a half to wait for deer!

Typically I carry 3 broadhead tipped arrows for a day hunt. I figure if I can't get it done with three, then the "stupid tax" applies and I have to go home and sit in time out and think about my mistakes. LOL

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 26-Sep-17

John, if I just hunted deer in deer season that would make sense. Stupid is only as stupid does, and the amount of arrows has nothing to do with that. 8^)). I pretty much get it done with one arrow, and have for a good many years. An HTM blunt, a judo or two....a few old modified broadheads for squirrels, etc. I've never once regretted having "too many" arrows.

I can't stand a heavy bow. That's a big reason I hunt with traditional gear vs. a compound. I have a 6-arrow quiver I use for West TX hunts where I may run into exotics, but I hate carrying my recurve with it on there. My EFA 4-arrow longbow quiver is probably my favorite, but it stays on my Adcock longbow, which I don't used as much these days due to the draw weight. So, my 3-arrow Kwikee is usually on my recurve. Only once have I ever wanted more arrows, and that was last year when I ran into a pack of sows and piglets. Killed two sows and one piglet with 3 arrows, and could have used 10. LOL

John....it's all good and we know how good of a shot you are. All I'm saying to you is don't judge someone's capability by the number of arrows they carry. Maybe you aren't inferring that but it seems to come through in some of the previous posts on this thread. It's a choice that some of us prefer a bigger batch of bullets. Das all.

From: JustSomeDude
Date: 26-Sep-17

But if you had high FOC you could have gotten two or three piglets with EACH ARROW :)

I've needed more than three a few times and generally carry five with a couple more back in my truck.

From: Jeff Durnell Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

I like back quivers, and with them I've carried just a couple of arrows or up to a couple dozen, depending on where I am, what's all in season, and how long I'm staying. I do like to leave room in there for a couple of squirrels.

From: limbwalker
Date: 26-Sep-17

George, I didn't mean to suggest that people needed more arrows because they can't shoot well. Not at all. I'd carry 10-20 if I didn't mind the added space and weight! LOL

After 38 years of bowhunting I'm still trying to find the perfect 5-arrow quiver. Might have to just design my own someday.

Justsomedude, I had fun trying to find two of those arrows because there was a small pond behind the sows and both arrows made it through the pigs and into the pond. Good thing the fletched end floated up!
