Hoew the heck does anyone hang these stands by themselves? I was just trying to hang one tonight and could not get the ratchet around the tree and try to hold the stand at the same time, I have the guide gear stand with the xl platform, Im going to have to put another set of climbing sticks up and have someone help me. Any suggestions? Ratchet straps are giving me a hard time as well. Thanks all

They can be a challenge. I've got a short chain with a hook on each end that I can position it with, then attach the ratchet strap afterwards. It helps.

When I hang a stand, the platform is folded back against the seat, I used a screw in step, about 6-8 in. about the seat, hook the stand to step, tighten your strap, let you platform down, step up on it, put your feet together, and push down where the platform is in contact with the tree.Always have your safety harness on at all times, almost easy, as you a hang a few. hope this helps.PETER

you should be practicing this at ground level first.. i have a toe rope tied to stand and pull it up last. also you should use a tree climbing belt so booth your hands can be free. and last if you are not sure of what your doing up there maybe you shouldn't be up there? are a different set up that works much easier. be safe and remember if you fall it probable will not end up good.

I only buy stands that use the T screw. You climb up and screw it in then lift your stand up and put it on then you have hands free to tighten the strap. If you don't go that route then you find a tree with a limb on the back side and you can wrap the strap around the tree directly on top of the limb so it doesn't slip down while your working on it. You can also grab the limb when need be.

Like what has been said. Use the safety harness and lineman's belt. Tie a haul rope on the stand before climbing. Screw in an eye bolt above where you want the stand. Then you can pull up the stand and tie it to the eye bolt to hold it while you take care of the rachtet straps. I even tried attaching a small pulley to the eye bolt so I could pull the stand up while I was on the ground. But this required climbing back down and up. It will work though.

Your difficulties and search for a better way may have saved your life.
I would suggest that you install a safety line first and then the tree stand. The line should extend from above the stand seat, to a point where you can attach your harness tether to a prussic knot from the ground. Tie the bottom end of the safety line to the tree and you then need only one hand to slide the prussic up the safety line. As you climb up the climbing sticks, move the prussic knot/tether up the safety line above you. Once you are at the elevation where you want the stand, secure yourself to the tree with a lineman strap, so as to allow you to work with both hands. With the lineman strap and the harness tether above, you are not very likely to fall, should one point of contact fail.
I did this last season, but had a carabiner on the harness tether loop. That is, the loop that is only eighteen inches from the point between my shoulders. That was what I used to attach to the safety line prussic. Also attached to that harness loop was my tether that I attach to the tree, at a point above my stand, it is unconnected as I climb and then I kneel on the platform, attach the loose tether to the tree and remove the carabiner connection to the safety line. I reverse the procedure to descend, therefore, I am attached to the tree from the moment I leave the ground, and return again.
For a safety line I use climbers static line of 1/2". That is the same line I use for my tether that I attach once I'm kneeling on the stand. My prussic knots are doubled and are made in 9mm climbers line.
In the picture is my tether that stays on the harness. Where it says "fisherman's loop knot", is where I attach the carabiner for the safety line. All lines and hardware should be climbers grade.

I use screw in steps. Get to the height I need and hang my leg over a step behind my knee. You shouldn't have to hang onto the tree at this point. Just don't lean back. Then use a rope that you have tied to your belt loop already. Pull the stand up and place stand upright irons between your arm and the tree. With your off hand swing the strap around the tree and pull through ratchet. Sometimes I use my teeth to hold the strap. I hung three at 15 ft first week of August. That was enough for me.

Some fellas say they can hang a lock on as quick as climbing with a climber. Guess it's possible if you have a system.

I do exactly as PA-R does....you only need a couple turns of the step to hold a stand. I also do the same on the back of the tree with chain on stands, this keeps the chain from possibly sliding down. Try leaving a chain on stand on a tree for a season or two and you will learn to leave some slack in the chain.

I quit using sticks years ago but still use loc ons but just millenniums. You can get the model with the bracket on a chain. Just chain it and hang the stand in the bracket. I still use a ratchet strap around the bottom to keep it still and quiet. I use a ladder stand to hang them over. Gives you a good platform to stand on and if somebody wants to hunt with you they can just sit in the ladder.

Nhbuck, do a dry run test hanging the stand when your feet are on the ground. Do you have a tree in your yard or somewhere nearby? Try your rope on the seat and an eye bolt, or tree step, or a rope-on step or something and see what works.

I secure a pulley above the height of the lock on position. Hoist and tie off. The rest is easy. Wish I thought of this many years ago!!

I use a belt if working from tree steps. The last couple I hung I put the platform of my climber half way up the tree and stood on that while I worked. You need to be able to use both hands. Be safe!
