I saw the big 6 point feeding in my yard today and he has rubbed off the velvet from his rack. Seems a little early to me.

Don't know about Alabama, but in Texas they are rubbing and by the end of the month there will be more without velvet than with.

I found buck rubs in the mt last weekend, here in PA. MD archery comes in the beginning of Sept, it seems like a 50-50 some in velvet some hard. Our season will come in on the 30th I would be surprised to see any in velvet by then.

Virginia deer typically are hard antlered right around Sept. 1
Deer don't rub to remove it necessarily, it will fall off on its own. Once he knows they are hard he starts the rubbing process getting ready for breeding. He is actually "ready" to breed at this time.

Velvet usually comes off around Labor Day here. I actually hit an 8 pt with my truck yrs ago. Got out to check the damage, then looked at the buck. Pieces of velvet were still stuck on his head. This was Labor Day weekend.
