Didn't want to hijack the thread about the Waller's down there in Florida, because that's a pretty serious subject… But somebody mentioned deer being in rut down there already???
Seriously????
Maybe they just go year-round down there?
Used to thinking we've still got a couple months to go up here....

Yeah, kinda weird. Starts in July in the everglades, and in February in the northwest part of the panhandle. Somebody once explained to me that this produces the optimum time for fawns to be born in each particular region. Not too wet in the South, and not too cold in the North. Or something like that...

Where I live (marion county) the rut is always last 2 weeks of October..But 40 miles north west of my house it's going on now and it's not hunting season till saturday. Down in sw florida bucks can be seen running does in late July.

Rut is ALWAYS timed to maximize fawn/calf survival - I just don't know enough about the weather down there to have the imagination to think that there might be a reason that it would be advantageous to have the fawns drop "early".
Further proof that we always have to be on guard against set ways of thinking!!!

Speaking of biology, does a really horrendous storm (in the condition it actually sweeps over the land) affect deer much. There are normally changes to the environment. Plus it might keep hunter busy repairing their roofs.

Bowlim -
Awful weather will get them hunkered down, but rutting activity will resume afterward and any un-bred does will just cycle again next month.
It would take something really cataclysmic to cause does to abort/resorb.
But a truly bad event right around the time that the bulk of the fawn crop is dropping could just about wipe out a year's worth, and for that matter, it could come at about any time when the fawns are too small to weather it... But I expect you knew all o' that....
