Since there is a thread "ARROWS OF 2017". Let's see some pointy thingy's. Could be stone, bone, steel, etc. Could be a arrowhead, knife, hawk, etc. The only stipulation is YOU had to make it in 2017. So let's see em guy's & gal's. John

So for the 90% of us who don't knap, what does WIP represent?

From: bodymanbowyer
Date: 10-Sep-17

Work in progress, also used in knife building and bow building. A term I have picked up. JF

From: Hot Hap

This has easily become my favorite thread.

Is there any difference in sharpness or cutting from the sawtooth edge vs the more fine edge?

From: bodymanbowyer
Date: 11-Sep-17

IDK, inmyelement I don't know. I'll be finding out though. JF

From: Stoner
Date: 11-Sep-17

Altizer your serrated edges are gnarly and your notching is superb. John

From: Altizer
Date: 11-Sep-17

The serrated edges are extremely sharp. But I do micro serrations on my normal points. Especially my hunting points. I reverse flake each one on opposing sides. Amazingly sharp.

From: Ihunts2much

Here is one I just did from some local onondaga chert. Stuff takes some serious pressure to flake, but can be made into very thin points that resist breakage.

bearfootin I really like that knife. That ironwood has nice movement in the grain. Also like that arrow too. Great craftsmanship.

bodymanbowyer that's quite the patriotic blade. Where did you find that? John

Thank you Stoner. I got the preform from Rick Tollett. It's fiber optic glass. It would have made a really cool bear. I'm working on this one but I'm taking a break from it right now cuz my second pass around is easy where I break this mahogany. JF

Practicing my notching and got greedy again, snapped the ears off. Tried to reshape and stalled the notch on the left. Tried a couple more heads , rushed and broke them in half. Gotta slow down and just enjoy the process not the end result. Kinda like riding the H-D, it's all about the journey and not the destination. John

This one is from a biface, that I picked up at the Iowa State Fair. Noviculite. It was a pretty tough one to work the only thing I can match it up to is one that's called the heavy duty. LOL

From: Catskills
Date: 09-Dec-17

Very nice work guys.

Altizer, is it strictly technique whether you get the pronounced serrations or a smoother edge?

Or does it depend somewhat on the material?

The very first two points I knapped are in the middle of the above frame. the little black one was done by pressure flaking the one one next to it (left of the point with the white spots) was done by percussion.

This point was knapped out of mookaite from Australia which some called petrified mud.
