I was pleased to get a message today that two of the bows I sent up to Utah for the flight shoots set new world records. In the unlimited weight class ELB, he shot 451 yards smashing the old record In the 50# weight class his son shot 325 yards barely beating the old record.
I also sent a 35# I have high hopes for that hopefully will set a record tomorrow.

I have to give Josef Monuz most of the credit as the Archer, Josef has set a bunch or records in the last few years.

That's awesome Steve, A big congrats!! Not to take any credit away from Mr. Monuz, but the bow had to have a lot to do with it, too. Good luck tomorrow.

My 35# was unfortunately a little overweight not sure how that happened. However in his practice he said it was shooting about 30 meters past the current record. Hopefully he will shave it down a little and use it next time. His wife also got a 50# elb record so that is 3 for today.

Yep the Hungary folks did good today. Congrats Steve . I did not fare so well . Got two arrows off this morning out of 50 pound selfbow when the string broke and she dry fired and split the handle. Borrowed some arrows from Lynn . My best before the break was 300 yds in the selfbow class. Forty behind mr. Perrys record. This afternoon I tried again with same arrows. 290ish but that one blew also. I have been here for a week and I think they have gotten to dry. Wrapping what I think are my best two with damp towels going to try broadhead on Sunday. Arvin

That's fantastic Steve. What did you make them out of? Has anybody else built 3 selfbows that set 3 world records on the same day?

FDP, I have had this happen before with a mixture of self bows and backed wood bows. I believe Dan Perry has also done this and possibly others I am not ware of. These particular bows were bamboo backed ipe.
Zeta bow, I think what made them perform so well is that I used the no set tillering technique. The bows didn't take any set at all. I did end up with a rounder arc of the circle tiller shape than I had planned but I wanted to avoid set so went with it.
I also want to give some credit to Eric Krewsons tillering gizmo, it works particularly well along side my no set tillering technique as I am only removing micro amounts of wood each time off the tree.
Flight shooting is not the same as shooting through a chrono, the archers and the arrows each play an equal part.

Thanks for the recognition Steve. You would be surprised at how many old time bowyers diss my little tool as being ineffective and a waste of time.
The key to success with a gizmo precise wood removal, a little bit at a time.

Eric, Something I just realized a few days ago that I have unconsciously done for years fits very well using a gizmo. Instead of dropping weight by removing wood I like to think I just keep perfecting the tiller by removing wood in stiff spots. The gizmo will quickly identify those little stiff spots. Sometimes we have a tendency to get one area bending pretty good and then switch to other areas. Truth is it is really important to finish all sections of the limb at about the same time so they don't get overworked during the tillering process. the Gizmo is perfect for doing this.

Drewster, maybe over the next couple weeks I will put something together on it. I have had a couple of threads on no set tillering at the PA sight. I don't like to push it as the best way or only way but more like an alternative, different things work well for different folks.

Steve a couple of questions if I may ..
what wood / woods were the bows made from?
what were the cross sectional profiles of the limbs?
what were the lengths, nock to nock?
would they conform to BLBS (British Long bow Society) specifications

Phil the rules were written by the British Longbow society I believe, they have to maintain a D profile crosssection with a thickness to width ration of 5/8. These bows were bamboo backed ipe and osage about 69" long.
