Was on another site and the term "shoulder rifle season" was mentioned. I'm in the dark as to what this means. Went to WY fish and wildlife site and while it did mention shoulder elk season, it didn't explain what that meant. Help me out here please.

Montana has a shoulder season. It's a cow elk reduction tag for specific areas of the state. Was told it's only for residents. Bummer. Good luck! Matthew

I realize Google is my friend and I use it quite often. Perhaps I should have been more specific with my question. When I went to the WY fish and wildlife site, I discovered that a shoulder season is an extra rifle season to cull elk in over-populated areas or zones. What I want to know is why they use the term "shoulder"?

wild guess: a "shoulder" is off to the side of the center. Maybe just a word thing.

It's being used as a verb. To shoulder something like a responsibility. Like to shoulder the responsibility of lowering a population of elk where that is needed...over and above what is normal. It is not specific to weapon but is used in conjunction with one for hunting purposes. A shoulder bow season, or a shoulder rifle season.

Is shoulder the new word we use instead of harvest?

You guys forgot the "off peak travel term" explanation as well as the "math term" explanation. However, I do see we might have added an explanation above.
Only the state officials can really say. I would guess it is likely a statistics reference.

It's a verb in my language since it shows action. Your mileage may vary of course.

Montana game website says its extra herd management season outside the regular season. I guess its like the shoulder of the roadways, you can only drive there with special reasons. But they also take about " shouldering your responsibility". http://fwp.mt.gov/mtoutdoors/HTML/articles/2016/shoulderQA.htm

Lots of fires burning right now in Montana. Just got back from Big Timber. Lolo is on fire, Bitterroot, and farther east also. Missoula is really smokey and Hiway 12 is closed.

Our DNR just announced 'emergency' taking several hundred doe antelope and deer due to fire damage. Many hunters think it a ploy for money and not based on any studies on carrying capacity. I do not know the real answer
